I'm not asking medical admin, which is the most straight forward path out of clinical medicine.

What role/ industry did you pivot to? How did you get your foot across the door? What additional qualifications did you need? What does your work entail now (lifestyle, responsibilities, etc.), and how is your pay?

  • I know a guy from my university who failed few subjects repeatedly and couldn’t complete the Exam to practice medicine (ERPM) here in SL and migrated to start work in the healthcare field in an insurance company. That dude now only stays in 5 star hotels when he visits SL and drives a Range Rover in Aussie.

Oh yeah, health insurance is super lucrative (but personally, against my conscience 😅). This kind of pivots aren't uncommon abroad. I was wondering if anyone has managed to do so while in Sri Lanka (migrating afterwards doesn't matter), mostly because visa laws are getting stricter everywhere and getting hired without any experience is harder.

Exactly yeah, I have many senior friends who passed PLABs and AMC but couldn’t land a job for years and now again have returned after years and trying to sit for ERPM. So yeah, migrating again has become difficult for medicos unless you have few years of expertise under your belt

Even with clinical experience migrating is hard. Medicine is a heavily regulated field, that's why🥲

  • What about clinical research

None whatsoever happens in this country. Especially not clinical trials that can help transition to pharma. Ministry of Health does research mostly related to policy stuff, which IS something I have considered.
