• This reminded me of an old interview.

Coach Derek Fisher was asked what has surprised him most during this trying season.

“Probably what jumps out the most is you still have to work pretty hard to motivate and inspire guys at this level,’’

I imagine playing with guys like Kobe and Pau can skew your perception on how hungry most players are are and what kind of work ethic they have.

I’m not surprised at all. These guys are already millionaires with guaranteed contracts (at least the main rotation guys are), and you’re asking them to play at peak levels for 82 games a season + playoffs and other things.

A lot of them don’t love basketball and are doing it because they’re really good at it and treat it like a job. Kobe obsessed over everything. That guy was a maniac.

But the guys who are trying to get to that level and take those jobs… they’re fun to watch because they’re playing like they have something to lose.

kobe was seriously a maniac. even in high school he’d wake up before the sun rose and shoot at the local park, after school he’d hang around sixers practices and shoot when the team wasnt practicing. all he did was ball

Was just talking about this with my barber. It’s crazy to me that you can get paid millions of dollars to play a sport and not even give it your all. I personally think the NBA season is just too long so it’s hard to care about the day after day grind of it all. But again, for the money these guys get paid it’s just crazy they don’t really seem to care

  • Man this guy sure hates losing lol

It’s not losing. It’s keeling over. The body language of the players was quite poor

The number of fast breaks lost because the whole team like tip toes back on D is low energy.

I can see why a coach would be pissed at the lack of hunger. That’s why fans like SAC even though they arguably aren’t great. They hustle and put forth effort.

I know you, you're the Los Angeles Lakers! I think you're the greatest, my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense. He says a lot of times, you don't even run down the court, and that you don't really try, except during the playoffs.

The hell I don't! LISTEN, KID! I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night! Tell your old man to drag LeBron and Luka up and down the court for 48 minutes!

You ever seen a grown Donkic naked?

The number of fast breaks lost because the whole team like tip toes back on D is low energy.

Not the whole team. One of them doesn't even bother to get back on D after turn overs.

    You can figure out who.

    The plus side of Brodie

He’s chaotic energy sometimes but he works hard!

Sometimes?! It's the best and worst thing about him. He gives everything he has 100% of the time.

    Except lavine

Laziness becomes a problem when you have guys making tens of millions a year.

You would have a point if other teams didn’t also have players make tens of millions a year

They usually do but there was a bad stretch this year of multiple losses by 30 and we aren’t quiet when that happens. We don’t got much here so all we ask for is some hustle and heart.

Effort plays are more exciting than skill plays a lot of the time.

It is the lowest vitamin D time of the year so they have no excuse

I don't blame him and the coaches in the past. It must really suck ass to jeopardize your job b/c your players got too much of an ego and money to win games.

How many teams around the league have good games to watch. It is so uninteresting, what the nba has become

  • They set up chairs without arm rests for the players. I hope they’re mentally prepared. It’s going to be very uncomfortable.

Well I always find the Lakers difficult to watch because my TV is very small and my eyesight is quite poor as well.

Only 2 juice boxes before playing!

    THIS PLACE IS A PRISON!

    On Planet Bullshit!

    Why are you so sweaty?

Liquid calories are a death sentence!

Bronny gonna have to stream cod for 30 hours straight as punishment.

“If this shit keeps up the seat cushions are GONE!!”

Monday’s headlines will be about how the ping pong tables have been removed

  • Reddick is a poster in the Lakers subreddit, confirmed.

    No I'm not

Not 100% sure this is not JJ

    It's Redick. One 'D'. He's not a Furyan.

    You’re wrong. He’s the mod

  • Luka plays no defense. AR can’t play defense. LeBron doesn’t want to play defense. Season over. Pretty simple.

Has anyone ever....asked Luka to play defense?

Yes. JJ asked him to play defense like a week ago.

    I just did.

Well...what did he say? Is he gonna do it?

He’s just staring at me. No response at all. This is getting uncomfortable

Let the man poop and close the door.

And take the TP with you on the way out.

I was told it wouldn't be uncomfortable until Saturday's practice... I thought I had more time...

He plays reasonably good defense in the playoffs. He just doesn’t do it in the regular season, because why would you?

    To win games mainly

Well shit..wasnt that what Smart was brought in for? 😅

Wait… you mean we all gotta play defense??

Don’t worry. Lakers still got Bronny.

    /s

I mean, at least he plays hard.

but grandpa lebron still wants 1 more championship though

40 year old Lebron is the last of the Lakers worries right now. And unlike Luka he can actually still play defense at an elite level in spurts.

Once LeBron is gone for real, Luka’s reputation on places like Reddit/Twitter is going to crater. He is a horrible defensive basketball player and puts out very little effort on that side of the ball.

Which is exactly why he has no MVPs and no championships and is getting passed by all of his contemporaries.

    JUSTICE FOR NICO

LeBron doesn’t want to play defense.

The fish rots from the head.

I guess LeBron will have to fire JJ and trade Luka.

Whoa. AR plays defense, it may not translate to steals, but he’s consistently making his rotations and closing out in shots. If you pick up your ma, he gets the ball, you stop his first move and his counter, and he passes the ball then congratulations you just got a stop. Or if you force a pass that your teammate tips into a steal, that’s great defense on your behalf that someone else gets a stat for.

AR legit had the fastest lateral movement of his draft class.

    What about DominAyton?

    [deleted]

Pretty bad take and which finals? They played like 3x in a row lol

  • Sounds like he should trade Luka to the Mavs for AD… I think that would solve all their problems

    Defense wins championships.

  • I love this shit.

Just piggybacking off you to say he didn’t say “we’re a terrible basketball team” he said “when we don’t have it we’re a terrible basketball team”

  • I still don't know how I feel about him as a coach tbh, but one thing I knnow is I can't blame him for how the Lakers play lol, nobody wants to play defense, it's actually insane, i don't know what a coach can do in this situation

Apparently they can have uncomfortable meetings.

The one lever he can pull is to start benching the starters when they don't put in defensive effort. The message needs to be sent to and through Lebron and Luka particularly.

The other hail Mary is starting Smart or Vando over Rui might motivate the big 2 to actually hustle.

Only player it would have an effect on is Luka…LeBron would just say “fuck it” since his ego is bigger than the arena.

Is LeBron still capable of serious defensive effort?

Ageing isn't good for your stamina.

Yeah, the reality might be that he can only be elite for spurts. Like Kareem at the end of his career. But the way the Lakers are constructed, they need him to be a full time superstar.

  • Dude, Reddick was always a max effort player. Not surprised this is killing him.

  • HUMBLE PIE HUMBLE PIE HUMBLE PIE

  • I honestly respect the brutal honesty. There are definitely some other teams, even other sports, that need some more brutally honest coaches like this.

  • How does rob keep getting away with his poor roster construction

Trading AD and scraps for Luka certainly buys him some time

Getting anything at all for AD is looking like an out of the park grand slam at this point

He is hamstrung by LeBron’s salary. LeBron is being paid like he is still in his prime. He doesn’t play defense anymore and can’t run the whole game.

Luka and AR can be a championship duo if they get surrounded by 3D shooters. The starting roster only had Ayton to anchor the Lakers defense. Luka, AR, Lebron, and Rui are below average defenders.

They rely on outscoring everyone they play. This only works against the bad teams but any playoff contender it’s gonna be ugly n

Luka and AR get picked on by athletic guards all the time you would know that if you watch the games they cannot start together, especially when AR's production drops off a cliff. You can see both of them getting switched on every time.

Not much you can do when a 41 year old is making $52 million. Pretty much gotta wait out LeBron and then you can really start prioritizing Luka and use some picks to get some pieces around him

Because he was Kobe’s agent. That basically gives him full immunity from Jeanie. All he has to do is say “Mamba Mentality” and Jeanie gets charmed. Can’t wait when he tries that to Mark Walter and he still fires him.

Mix of poor ownership before the recent sale (i.e. the reason why Caruso walked) and having two generational talents who get paid like generational talents taking up payroll space

Problem is one of those generational talents no longer plays like a generational talent outside of spurts while still getting paid like one.

What are you talking about? He turned a losing team of mid talent/budding maybes into a team with two top 10 players and won a chip. He then survived the debacle of LeBron forcing his will on the team makeup to put together a decent roster, and then he turned an often injured aging all-star into a mid-20s top 3 talent. Once they get off from Bron I fully expect the roster will be good but not a lot of money to go around after Bron and Luka’s contracts.

If LeBron doesn't come we still have a mediocre team. Look up the roster before LeBron shows up and tell me if they were going anywhere cuz clearly they weren't. Most of them are almost out of the league by now. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about

Pelinka has basically been blessed with luck and that has hidden how bad of a job he has done. The ONE thing that the Lakers have generally done well is draft, but outside of that AD forced his way to LAL and Nico literally commit the worst deal in the history of the sport to bail him out.

I’m not saying he’s the worst GM in the league, but he’s definitely not a good one.

Idk about that. The Lakers draft record (and even undrafted players) under Pelinka is pretty good and he’s honestly underrated in that aspect.

Yes, I said that the one thing they have done well is draft.

And they just got rid of the guys who actually scouted and did a pretty good job with the drafting. 4d chess.

I feel like that’s a ton of credit to give the GM… he had LeBron and AD both say “I’m going to LA and only LA” and he got like 1 strong year out of a top 2 player all time and a perennial MVP vote gettter. He has done an awful job as the GM, if he was hired by any other market/team that doesn’t just get players for free he would have been fired a long time ago.

  • > I'm not doing another 53 games like this.

My guy doing the Ruben Amorim

  • Quick, get another team to trade them a generational talent.

"trade" aka get the NBA to bully them into letting the player go for nothing

  • The clip started mid sentence. What did he say they're a good basketball team when they do?

The question was basically, “what do you see as the primary points of improvement?”

JJ said, “Like I said earlier in the season, the words of the day are ‘effort’ and ‘execution’. When we do those we’re a great basketball team, and when we don’t we’re a terrible basketball team, and tonight we were a terrible basketball team.”

wow the headline is so out of context yeesh

also if you listen to the clip it sounds like he's pissed at the team and is going to do what he thinks he needs to make them better. the title skips the entire middle to make it sound like he's about to quit

  • Is he calling out Bron basically? I mean I’d think the standard would be reinforced by your team leader.

Bron isn’t even the second option at the moment. Like obviously people listen to him but I don’t think anyone expects a 40+ year old to lead the defense.

The man spent 20 seconds arguing with a ref instead of getting back on defense. Blatantly ignored JJ a few weeks ago so he can crack jokes with the opponents bench. Constantly cherry picks leaving his man to get easy put backs n rebounds. If he don’t wanna give effort no more just retire or come off the bench

I’ll just assume you’ve seen more of him this year than I have tbh. For what it’s worth I think the lakers would probably do better without being held up by brons contract.

For sure, but I’m just more so talking about from the effort stand point. Just cause he’s Bron doesn’t mean he can let people blow by him, same with Luka.

When you’re 41, effort doesn’t cut it anymore. The team can’t be expecting him to be a great defender.

Oh for sure, I don’t think it makes it a good thing. But if JJs problem on defense was specifically the 40 year old with sciatica this team is just cooked anyways. I think LeBron IS a problem on the defensive end this year, but for Bron it feels more like a physical limits thing than a caring issue.

In my opinion he’s talking about Luka or maybe Rui. But I don’t really watch a lot of laker games so take that with a grain of salt.

    [deleted]

I mean, yeah because people can look at his career as a whole now. He really has nothing else to accomplish. He’s the most popular player in the league and has been a figurehead for most of his tenure. People are just gonna talk about him more.

  • They're 19-10, I don't understand

Well, most of the wins have been against garbage teams.

It also depends on how your losses look - are they close or getting blown out with low effort?

  • He’ll do everything but call out LeBron

  • And I’m not watching it.  I gave up a few weeks ago when 6’10” Kleber air balled a finger roll lay in. Even the announcers were in disbelief.  Garbage basketball.

And now Reaves is out for at least a month. I’ve been a diehard Lakers fan for a quarter century, and I get to pay for League Pass to watch these games. If they don’t start winning, I’ll be canceling that shit with joy.

  • All talk. Do something.

  • This is what happens when the superstar player on your team sets the example that getting back on defense or even playing real defense, doesn’t matter. One ring wasn’t worth all this shit we had 16 and we’ll have plenty more. Should have rebuilt.

  • Luka isn't going to play defense. Reaves isn't and LeBron is old. Thats 3 of your starting 5 who aren't playing defense. Just not going to cut it against OKC and Denver

  • Rob Pelinka is lucky to get that new deal and if I'm Luka I'd be worried about his ability to improve this roster in the short and long term. LeBron makes too much money even if he's "earned" it, AR is dope but his defense is a negative which make him a good trade piece. This season feels like oil and water rn.

  • Then quit.

Like the rest of your team.

  • The quote needs to have “….words” if it’s a snip of a sentence otherwise the quote is taken out of context and makes no sense.

Yeah, and I feel that cutting off the quote here doesn't make any sense even with an ellipsis.

I think there's only two choices: "Tonight we were a terrible basketball team." or "We're a good basketball team, and we're a terrible basketball team. And tonight we were a terrible basketball team."

Otherwise it seems disingenuous to me, because he never said that they are a terrible team. He said that they are a good team AND a terrible team. Those are two very different statements. Like if someone says "Sometimes, I love dogs, and sometimes I hate dogs", I don't think you get to quote them in a headline as saying "(...) I hate dogs".

  • that team needs a shakeup trade or else they arent sniffing anywhere close to the West Semi-Finals let alone The Finals.

  • Austin Reaves takes some stupid fucking shots and turns it over too much

  • Correct me if I am wrong, but the Lakers haven’t been good in a very long time.

  • They need a new defensive minded coach like Darwin Ham.

  • Trade lebozo or the season is over. If he can’t run people over and dunk he’s completely worthless.

He has the most rushing yards in NBA history, that's something.

  • Keeping it a buck

  • I mean…..can we get Dalton Knecht in the game?!

knecht is a massive black hole on both sides. missing shots is one thing but he almost has negative ball IQ at times. never in the right place on either end.

guy has lost any and all ability to play for the lakers once that trade was cancelled.

I’m sure playing Knecht more is going to fix this lakers team lol

  • Lebron getting All NBA second team last year continues to be the biggest joke in the league. He was this bad last year too. Lakers were better when he was out. He’s useless on defense and still can’t play off the ball on offense. Glad these goat convos are over. No one can legitimately argue for him anymore. The man been trash for years and hasn’t played defense in a decade.

  • Sounds like JJ is out since someone will need to do another 53 games like this.

  • At 11 seconds, there's a turnover, look at the hustle out of LeBum.

The Lakers will lose as long as he's still on the court. Zero effort, zero hustle, just phoning it in and padding stats.

It is ridiculous anyone ever claimed he was the Greatest of all Time.

  • Maybe he should man tf up, be a head coach, and get LeGrandpa off the freaking floor. Dude is useless

  • Way to completely fuck up the quote and entirely change the meaning of his statement 😂 👍

  • He had THE WORST body language when he played during the Sixers years. He’s not nba coach material, he can’t keep the disappointment behind closed doors in body language or spoken language.

  • And he forgot to say he is a terrible coach who got the job cause he had too much wine with LeBron.

Lakers became a joke of a team.

I hate this take that he's a terrible coach lol. He can clearly coach if you just watch the games. And while I do feel like after a while this kind of "hard-ass" coaching may get a little tiring (I personally love it and love the accountability) he's a very passionate and good coach. He has things he can improve on like any other coach but I would much rather him than many of the options in the league right now. And I think he will continue to become better as seasons go on

The roster isn't great. I don't fully blame Rob Pelinka either because in the grand scheme of things he's made some good moves with what he has had to work with but I think the roster construction could be better, players could care more, players can try more, JJ can coach differently, etc.

His roster is bad. Players keep whining they don't get the whistle they want. Players don't produce any effort in defense. Players have zero team spirit. He has zero solution when his team get slapped. He always blame something when loses. He's a terrible coach with zero professional experience. You would have to be an extreme fanboy to think he can manage a team and the downvotes are proving it.

Lebron didnt hire him, what a take

Lakers have been a joke since Jerry passed and his nepo babies became the owners.

We’re a fun first round playoff exit team. We’re just averaging out lol

  • Those clips looked like something from an entirely different league...

  • I'm no NBA super fan but aren't they 19-11?

  • And here everyone thought Danny Hurley wasn’t prepared to lose at the level that happens in the NBA

  • You’d think the Lakers had a losing record. They’re 19-10 lol

  • Well the title of the post is wrong, that’s not what he said, for starters.

  • Imagine watching the NBA during the regular season and not once the playoffs start

  • Head Podcaster Redick is right. The LA Lakers are a bunch of selfish dopes who only care about money.

  • He shouldn’t be worried. I’m pretty sure hes not doing 53 more games.

  • How many rings did J.J. win as a player?

  • I'll take: "Things to Say That'll Get You Fired" for $500 Alex!

  • I love JJ. This is what every coach should be.

  • Redick is not a good coach.

  • Yeah they are terrible including the coach 😭

  • Basketball players don’t give a shit until the playoffs.

  • Love it… he is a baller in the realist sense… remember his work at duke… if he can carry a team like that again as a coach its a ring

  • Aren’t they 19-10

  • You will do whatever Lebron tells you to do Coach!! Haha!!

  • Replace him with Thibs

  • Wow what a shitty post title 😂

  • Dont worry JJ, its almost 2026, absolutely nobody is watching the NBA. No one will see yall fall apart.

  • His criticism aside, the guys a tool

  • Is he going to get fired or quit

  • You want AD back, Dallas would be happy to…

  • I don't watch basketball. I'm not a fan. But I know enough of the rules to play. But God damn does 53+ games sound boring.
