• Not a wrestling fan, but a Huge John Cena fan.

Same. I am in danger of putting him up too high of a pedestal.

Quick, say something bad about John Cena

You can't see him most of the time

It makes sense, it’s in his name

    John, see? Nah!

Oh my god I’m not going to be able to sleep wondering if this was intentional or not.

How does the joke work or make sense any other way?

Go look at cenas instagram. His sense of humor does not require sense

Not intentional. It’s his actual name since birth.

Met one of his brother through work.

    What was his pre-birth name?

I think they're talking about if "You can't see me" was his catchphrase because of his last name.

Works on contingency no money down!

Works on contingency? No, money down!

    underrated comment

It wasn't really him at all those Make a Wish Visits. It was his clone?

He loves peace and doesn't care about how many people he has to kill to get it?

He apologized to China for saying Taiwan's a country... but spoke in Mandarin so kind of a flex

He apologised for saying Taiwan was a country and made a glazing video for China after that

Can’t really blame him for that since its a self preservation thing. Anti-Taiwan extremists are relentless when it comes to this kind of thing. They could make your life a living hell.

I doubt he made the apology to avoid extremists. He made it mostly because the studio demanded it. It was for Fast & Furious 9 and those movies needed China. It's the rare example of an American movie that China outperformed the US box office.

    https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt5433138/?ref_=bo_se_r_1

So one can sympathize with him losing his ability to be in future big movies if he didn't make the apology. But he also doesn't need to be in big movies (I'd guess).

He is still on good terms with the rapist sex trafficker Vince McMahon and choose to attend his birthday this year, and still talks about the love he has for him. He’s also said that Vince should pay for his crimes, but for me actions speak louder than words.

In the past week he said of his colleague CM Punk going to Saudi Arabia to run propaganda for their government was awesome and made him cry.

That’s not to say he’s a bad person, but he’s got some highly questionable views.

I think with Vince, it's more that he doesn't want to believe than that he knows the truth and condones it. Vince is a master of manipulating people on every level so it's not surprising that guys he's given the world to are loyal to him.

I do think John is a good person but his sense of loyalty, a virtue, may put him in shady territory sometimes.

    [deleted]

He just said on the Bill Simmons podcast that Vince needs to pay for his behaviour.

Oh wow that’s usually something you save for when you’re retir- …oh.

He totally botched his pardon my take interview which is easily the easiest interview anybody will ever take part of in their life

    I can't see him

Hopefully he doesn't end up being a POS like most other celebrities these days.

Same. He just seems like a genuinely good guy and I'm happy for his success.

Absolutely amazing on The Peacemaker! Fabulous acting

Never did I ever think that one day I would say that John Cena has devastated me with his acting. Peacemaker is phenomenal and he's so good in it.

    Especially the latest season.

He made me tear up a little.

Not a wresting fan, don't even know much about John Cena outside of his impressive amount of Make A Wish appearances, but even I got the tiniest bit choked up at the end of that video. Enjoy retirement my dude, you've earned it.

Same here. Wrestling never made any sense to me but honesty is respectful within itself 🫡

You know about action movies right? And soap operas right? And about stage theater right?

Then that's it. That's all there is to get about wrestling. It's a live-action action movie with some over the top drama thrown in

A live-action martial arts film, because those are the only media where any conflict can be resolved with an over the top fist fight.

I started looking at it as theatrre, and it changed my perspective on it. I dont watch it still, but I do enjoy hearing the stories from old wrestlers.

Yeah, it's basically "what if the jocks and gym bros were also theatre kids?"

It’s basically trailer-park soap opera with a lot of baby oil and piledrivers.

The best kind of mindless entertainment.

    Hardly.

Like most mediums of art, professional wrestling is multifaceted.

Sure, it can be mindless fun sometimes; it can be silly, stupid, campy, trailer park soap opera some days in some promotions. But sometimes? It can tell truly phenomenal, nuanced and complex stories of wrath, vengeance, heartbreak, triumph, love, friendship, and betrayal.

Toni Storm and Mariah May, Swerve Strickland and Hangman Page, Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, and even just a couple hours ago, John Cena's final match.

Yes, wrestling has been seen as trailer park trash for a while, usually for what it was back in the 1980s and 90s and the reputation it received back then. If you look a little closer, however, underneath all the pomp, the camp, and the cheese, there is a worthwhile artform to explore. Imo, at least. Go look at Supereyepatchwolf's video on Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, or...I think it was Max Landis's video called "Wrestling isn't wrestling."

It still may not be your thing at the end of the day, and that's totally cool! It isn't for everybody, but I'd hardly call it "mindless entertainment."

I never got into wrestling, but I did have a friend growing up that was obsessed. I’d pick up some 24ozs and head over for the events just to watch the acrobatic display. I grew up with 15 years of gymnastics and attending and then working at a circus camp and teach acrobatics and trampoline; some of the moves these wrestlers pull off are enormously technical and it was so fun to watch!

Yeah. Some of them have insane athleticism.

    What's your favorite move technique-wise?

Absolutely, the world would be a lot better if there were a lot more John Cena’s in the world. I stopped watching wrestling the night Owen Hart died, I was in the arena.

John has done so much for so many people including but not just make a wish. I am a nobody, but I do try to help people. There is probably 3-4 times a year when I am tired or don’t want to do something and he comes to my mind and hearing stories about him working and flying around the world and he still takes time to do charity things makes me do it.

As many people who he has made a direct difference in their lives, there are more people who he has inspired to also help people and that should be his legacy.

Ps-I also love how he can make fun of himself in Peacemaker. I love the show but can’t think of another actor that show works with.

He’s really become a pretty good actor. He’s always been funny, but his dramatic/emotional range is getting better all the time.

He’s just a great fuckn guy.. he literally beat Dwayne at becoming a big idol and sell out for the greater good

  • John Cena is an absolute Chad. The amount of work he's done with the Make A Wish foundation is absolutely legendary. One of my closest childhood friends got to meet him through Make A Wish. Sadly, my friend didn't beat cystic fibrosis and passed away shortly after their meeting. On behalf of my friend, I extend my thanks to John Cena for being who he is.

I was at a wedding a few years ago where someone at our table was a very high up person at Make a Wish and I asked her who the best celeb was for Make a Wish, she didn’t hesitate a moment : “John Cena, he does EVERY request we send his way and will move his schedule to accommodate.”

The worst, in case you are wondering , is Kid Rock - who apparently is not to be contacted anymore after having canceled last minute on two separate requests

What dying kid wants to meet Kid Rock? I definitely feel like that was a parent’s request that the child latched onto.

It’s the ones that wanna just get it over with as fast as possible.

So fucked I laughed at this lmao..

actually laughed out loud at this

They just wanna bawitaba dadangadang get on with it

“As my dying wish, I want to punch Kid Rock. I want to punch him so hard. Please let me punch Kid Rock, while there is strength left in my limbs.”

I laughed entirely too hard at the last line.

Not surprising, kid Rock's biggest fans are dudes who have tattoos of their children but not custody

Kid Rock makes music for people who know exactly how much Sudafed one person is allowed to buy.

Kid Rock makes music for guys with encyclopedic knowledge of age of consent laws

He makes music for people who think pee is stored in the balls

If you meet a guy with a kid Rock tattoo, that guy knows a mechanic who for 200 bucks will install a bypass switch on that breathalyzer interlock the courier made you install in your car

Kid Rock makes music for women who can take one look at a parole officer and know whether he'll loosen your ankle monitor a few notches for a blow job.

I saw a meme the other day, it was a picture of kid Rock being interviewed on the news and the tweet said he looking like the spokesperson for gas station boner pills

    Modern poetry

If what Kid Rock does is considered "music," then every time I take a piss in the snow I'm "painting."

That's a good insult, I'm stealing that one lol

I stole it. There's tons of them. Like, kid Rock is the favorite music of guys who tell their step daughters friends they've filled out

This may be the first comment that had made me laugh and retch

6 years ago they did a story about him reaching 600 wishes granted. There were only like 2 other people that had done 300. Curious how many he's done now. Legend.

Hulk Hogan probably did more given that they didn’t do a formal count of Wishes granted until around 1992 and from 1992 onward Hogan was up above 200. It shows you how much kids really love wrestling.

Thank you for sharing your friends story ❤️

Doesn't he hold an unofficial record for granting the most Make a Wish foundation wishes?

No, I'm pretty sure he holds the official record and he's like 30 percent above the number 2. He's number one with a bullet.

Not to make the charity seem like contest, I'm just trying to underscore how important this charity clearly is to him.

Yeah, I like how he also acknowledges the things that he has done in the past that he is not proud of. That he is a human after all and also not above anyone else.

One of the only few celebrities that are in the limelight, I can actually look up to.

Ya just a good dude. Doing his part to make a better world.

One of the kindest human to grace the earth

Cena is like the light at the end of the tunnel. If you see him, run.

    Ironically, he's invisible

Good thing we can't see him

I will always love him for his Make A Wish contribution.

I came because I knew about Cena and how much he has done especially for kids with challenges.  I wanted to celebrate his very in brand sign off.

But u/packersfan823 you have me just sobbing.  I had a relative growing up who had CF.  I learned how to cup my hands to pound on his back so I could help him. He was my parents generation and was always so kind to me.  But this was the 80s and him even living to close to 40 was so rare he arranged for his body to be donated specifically to the team who treated him to advance the treatment.  He wanted to make it better for those that came after him, to realize that no matter what there are things bigger than you and that in my mind was what kept him going.

I honestly never thought I'd hear people genuinely aiming at beating CF in my lifetime. That is so freaking amazing I'm bawling over here.  I'm sorry for your loss but I'm also so very heartened that your friend actually had hope, had a chance to beat it, and had people like you in their life.

It feels kind of right that this happened in this thread about Cena.  That two people randomly crossed paths and connected on something deeply personal.

I am so very sorry for your loss.

When I went to my CF funeral, if was the first one where I didn't cry. I realized it was because he said goodbye, he never stopped fighting, and that he never fought CF with rage but rather perseverance and a smile. Literally the definition of no regrets.  I'm that I found peace.

I hope you have found peace too. If you haven't, I hope you will find it.

    Thank you.

I don't watch wrestling, and I think he's just kinda okay as an actor, but as a human being? A+++++ for this. He obviously truly cares about the mission and isn't doing it for publicity or anything other than to be a good person to people who are dying.

  • There goes one of my last childhood hero. Thank you, John, you are truly the GOAT.

He really was a consummate professional and kept WWE alive. Tough shoes to fill with Triple H, Rock, SCSA, Brock, Eddie all kinda leaving or getting injured.

Yeah especially the injury that Eddie got. Good luck recovering from that.

One of the worst cases of death I’ve ever seen tbh.

I don't think he'll ever be the same again.

True. I was a HBK and Rock fan, but Cena slowly and gradually made me his fan. An absolute legend.

If you're a wrestling fan, I highly recommend listening to the Behind the Bastards about Vince. Many wrestling deaths and injuries could have been prevented. Wrestlers also historically have a low life expectancy because they put their bodies through so much and have no support outside the ring.

    He's not dead

    You just can't see him

What a beautiful sentiment. You’re right. In a way, he’ll always be with us.

...and his name was John Cena...Soft angel trumpets: "Ba da-da daaaaaaa"

  • Sad to see him go. Cena got me interested in the WWE again after being a big fan in the 90s. Say what you will about WWE and/or John Cena, but there is no denying that he had an excellent career.

He’s the perfect example of somebody who used his position in the world to make huge impacts. Most save-a-wishes ever, like 500 or something. So so so much respect to this man.

Think he’s well over 600 at this point

If you did one every weekend, that’d still take you over 11 years to reach

I'm not informed and I highly respect him for what he does, but surely he does multiple a day when he visits a certain hospital or something right? Or is this 600 individual days of him doing work for the foundation?

And honestly he was probably one of the best figures to do such work for these kids, in his prime he was probably viewed as Captain America by most kids.

There also had to be some sort of supply and demand going on though? The child or child's family needs to have that very specific wish and it's not like you choose from a menu of limited options

    Over 650

And it's got to be well over that now because the article I found that mentions him hitting 650 is three years old.

The last count I can find is late 2022/early 2023 at 650

I think he’s doing it right. Go out young and on top. Make everyone miss you. Go find something you love and enjoy it. What he did for the sport won’t be forgotten. 🫡 the 🐐. Please don’t comeback at 60 😂

Does almost 50 count as still young?

I mean he hasn’t really been a full time wrestler for a decade and came back for one last run this year before hanging them up, so I’d say it’s pretty young for his career field especially considering so many other legends in wrestling have a habit of coming back sporadically over the years and getting back in the ring.

    "Go out on top."

To Cena's credit...he did the honorable thing and respected the business, by losing in his final match. As it should be.

I think they mean in terms of perception. Most legends of the sport have gone out under very inauspicious terms, and it's nice to see Cena retain his reputation, health, and sanity for several decades

Oh I was going to say, shouldn’t he go out on his back?!

I'll never forget watching him during his Thuganomics era with the sweatpants lol. Then he quickly became my favorite wrestler along with Kurt Angle. I grew up as a pre-teen to teen with John Cena so I know i've officially become that age where all the legends I grew up with are retiring :(

Really felt like the spiritual successor to Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Also sad to see him go, however I haven’t actually seen him.

  • Now you really can't see him...

    Who they clapping at?

    Obviously potato salad

  • Dude's a legend, not just in the WWE, but also as the most charitable Make A Wish foundation celebrity ever. He's granted over 650 wishes, which is supposedly over 400 more then the next closest celebrity (Justin Bieber is most often cited as #2 with over 250 wishes). Wishing him the best in his new chapter in life and I hope he continues to make wishes come true.

Kudos to Bieber for that too amidst the image a lot of people have of him at this point.

My friend (a dad) and his son met Justin in an elevator one time. My friend nervously asked “can we get your autograph?” Justin politely declined, and instead took a few minutes and chatted with his son, asked what type of music he liked, etc. Everything I’ve ever heard about him makes him seem like a pretty cool guy

Most people just seem to hate the image record companies created using him. No one really knows who he really is

Nah I think it’s more that he’s a complete dick to his wife in public and had several dark moments surrounding his substance abuse. People jokingly hated on Bieber years ago because of his teen heartthrob appearance. People really hate him now because he’s a very problematic guy who needs a lot of help.

He received a ridiculous amount of undue hate from a young age. He should be a husk of a man at this point given his upbringing. But he seems to have his head on as straight as you could expect from a child star. I was never a fan of his music, or Ariana Grande's, but I still get a little pissed when I see folks dumping on them knowing full well how fucked their lives must have been from the jump. It's one of the many, many things that bothers me about celebrity culture.

Oh man, I feel bad now that I know he did so much for the kids.

And that was 650 three years ago! He's probably done a lot more since.

  • What a legend. So much love for Cena!

Did he win his last match??

    He lost.

Pretty sure he wanted it that way. One interview i saw was he wanted his last match paving way for the future in the sport. Just how he started, fighting Kurt Angle.

If you're a true professional wrestler, you always go out "on your back." It's tradition.

And if you’re a smart professional wrestler you go out while you still have some liver function. Maintaining that physique is not easy on a body.

Hopefully. Now that there is no need to keep on being on cycle anymore he‘ll probably will deflate just like Batista.

He already has, quite a bit. Ever since making Hollywood his full time gig, he’s slimmed down and lost muscle.

This. Cena has so much respect for the business that I wonder why anyone thought he wouldn’t go out the traditional way.

And he walked out with his head held high. A good lesson for any young people watching.

    An Oscar worthy performance!

Not only did he lose, but tapped out to a submission, something he has never done. It’s a pretty apt metaphor.

He tapped out in his last match, and he’s “tapping out” on professional wrestling.

  • I'll admit, I cried a tear or two. I've been watching wrestling as a regular thing since 2002. Cena was one of those guys that was just always there. No matter what changed, who came who went, up and down the card, even when he was hurt which didn't happen often he was always there.

It's real sweet to grow old.

Me too, the tap out was poetic and the final bows at the end of his decades of performance really made it a true ending. Sweet but heartbreaking.

  • Can someone re-edit this and put a circle around John Cena. I can't see him.

    Fuck you.

Spoken like a typical Yankees fan.

He may have retired long ago, but this will never die

By golly, it's been a while.

Almost as long as it’s been since you’ve lost the game

I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. Good job.

    🎺🎺🎺🎺

  • His back is totally fucked. He can’t even stand straight.

To be fair this is from minutes after he’d just been through a 30 minute match where he’s been slammed on his back over and over again.

  • I haven't cared about wrestling since I was a kid, but Cena just seems like he's loving his life more than anyone else. When he made his cameo in Pluribus I lost it. What a guy.

That cameo is extra hilarious coz he’s playing as himself but also not really him haha

He’s playing himself and every other living person on Earth

  • The end of a legend and the beginning of something new.

Was so shocked but happy to see that scene lolol

  • So many wrestlers just disappear, and then you find out what happened to them in Wikipedia, and it’s usually not good.

  • Champ? Is Champ there?

    Who is champ?

That question will be answered this Sunday night.

THAT QUESTION WILL BE ANSWERED THIS SUNDAY NIGHT WHEN JOHN CENA DEFENDS THE IN WWE SUPERRRR SLAMMMM

  • So how many Mania’s go by before he makes a surprise appearance?

He’s said that after this he’s completely done, which is part of why they made such a big deal out of it. I don’t know if that means he won’t ever appear again in WWE or if it just means he won’t do in-ring work again

He said he'll be around but what won't be wrestling.

I could see him making surprise appearances for one shot story lines and such but never in ring work.

He signed a five-year ambassador contract. He will show up, but he will never wrestle again.

He's done, he a stand up guy and he said this was it for him. No surprises and want the next Gen to carry on.

He’s also seemed to make a good pivot to acting so probably won’t need to fall back on wrestling.

He actually said he just signed a new five year contract with WWE and will be around. This was just his last official match, wrestling wise. But I expect he will still be a presence for a long time to come.

You know, it's an old joke that no one ever really retires in wrestling and for the most part it's true no one every really goes away. But Cenas been demonstrably not like the legends of old in a lot of ways, I imagine this will be another one of those ways in that he knows what he's done.

I think he’s done for good. Looking at the way he walks in some videos, I think he has back problems that are only going to get worse with time. Adding to it with more WWE would be pretty bad for him

Next year, him vs. The Rock

    Thrice in a lifetime event

    He’s never coming back

  • Cena is so cool. Great retirement after an amazing career.

Unless something comes out about him that's bad then I never liked him .

he loves Vince McMahon who shit on a woman's head that was being sex trafficked and apologized to the China regime so it's a mixed bag. He's done great work with Make a Wish

He sold his soul to the rock and we’re still not really sure what it means

He had beef against some of the roster and some of the peeps have bad things to say about him.

But, to be fair to Cena, when you get into the wrestling business you have to be a dick in the locker room to get somewhere. Every single wrestler who was at one point a household name have locker room horror stories.

  • Hes a good dude, I hope he never becomes the villain

Hes done done, he's never been tapped in 20 years, until tonight. In an interview he said it over , no surprises his WWE chapter is closed and want the next generation to carry on.

He actually did become the “villain” for a stretch during his retirement tour this year. It had a chance to be interesting but Paul Levesque is such an awful booker that they just kinda gave up on it.

  • This felt like the end of the Truman Show😭

  • I've never even seen a wrestling match, but there goes the best man in Hollywood.

  • What am I supposed to be looking at here? It’s just a shot of the tunnel?

  • Guy has the most Make A Wish wishes granted. If that doesn't put him in your good graces. I don't know what will.

  • I don't even watch wrestling but this got me in the feels

  • He just seems to be a genuinely nice guy

  • All that celebration in his honour and he couldn't even be bothered to show up. What a douche.

  • IMO, he’s the last legend WWE will ever have. The company and the roster has become soulless and obnoxiously forced.

  • Lump in your throat type of stuff

  • He holds the record for most wishes granted. link

  • Cut to the Peacemaker musical intro

  • Cena's retirement bow? Pure class act… unseen levels of grace from a champ we couldn't see coming.

  • Nice to see Ricky Stanicky honored

  • If you love wrestling you can't hate John. Carried the business post Rock/Austin for 20 years. Couldn't even go to Hollywood in peace because they didn't know how to book Roman and had to keep coming back part time to elevate the younger guys to his level. Selfless about charity work and bringing up the prestige of the business. He knew that the business was bigger than he was, and worked his ass off to be worthy of being the face of WWE.

Thank you for your service, John.

  • He’s a veteran?

  • I enjoy him a lot, by all accounts he’s a total sweetheart and seems endlessly curious.

  • So great that he went out not as a character or as part of a bit, but just as a guy named John Cena who was grateful for the journey.

    Such a noble man.

  • Wait. What happened? It was just a shot of the stage. What did I miss?
