Hi everyone. I had a connecting flight 2 days ago (Santa Ana - Seattle - Reykjavik) and my luggage was checked through. Unfortunately, when I arrived at my destination, I was told that my luggage didn't make it. I filed a PIR report and they assured me that my suitcase would be delivered to my apartment the next day. Well, it's been 2 days, and the luggage is not even found yet according to the tracker. I'm devastated because I'm moving apartments like tomorrow and I really need my stuff. My clothes, charges, skincare products, gifts and souvenirs were left there.

Is there anything I can do? I'd never been in such a situation before and I hadn't even thought about getting a bag insurance. What are the chances that I'll get my bag back at all? Am I entitled to a compensation at least? What can I do now? Thank you

  • Losing your luggage is a very shitty situation to be in, but you literally can't do anything apart from going back to the airport where it got lost, or wait until further notice from the airport / airline.

Stay in touch with them! They may have found it back already but are behind on logging it. You can imagine you're not the only person losing their baggage and every airport has a literal room full of unclaimed bags.

So yeah, stay on their tails and keep an eye on the tracker. Hopefully the bag is on the next plane!

if OP's journey is on an EU/EEA-based airline and they don't live in Iceland, they're entitled to compensation for purchasing essentials such as basic clothes and hygiene articles. if the luggage is lost for real, they can apply for reimbursement for the actual items in their luggage after 3 weeks.

  • Buy new stuff claim on insurance

  • All of this info including the airline policies for lost luggage can be found in a quick Google search.

There is nothing to do but realize the stuff is probably gone. Buy a few things and keep the receipt.

No shit. Sometimes it helps to get ideas from many people.

What new ideas? There are only a few things to do in this case so what exactly would one crowdsource here? File paperwork with airline, buy new basics and submit receipts for reimbursement. So no shit, there's not much else to do.

  • A google search will give you all the answers you need.

  • Keep in mind the time difference. What feels like 2 days for you is 1 day elsewhere. Was the bag properly labeled with more than one label? Did you have a tracking device or two in case the 1 malfunctions? A photo of the bag before it goes off on the conveyor belt as a reference for the airline? Use all or any of this to provide to th airline to help them locate your bag. My bag was didn't arrive to Yangon from Bangkok years ago. One of the most traveled through airports in Asia. The airline tag came off. What helped them find it was the photograph sent to them. Arrived the same day once (1 hour flight) they had that pic. If you don't have one find it onliine.

  • The airline will reimburse you for reasonable replacements for what you need until your luggage is returned. Toiletries, clothes for each day. Make sure to get and store receipts as they will be needed to file the claim.

  • What does your AirTag show?

    So much this!!!

  • When you buy travel insurance, your luggage won't get lost, almost 99% confident about this. I secretly wish my luggage would get lost because I've always buy travel insurance but pack nothing valuable.

There isn't much you can do but see what the airline pays out, there is some law around this but I forgot if it's the FCC (assuming you're American).

There is a place in Alabama where the sell or auction off lost airplane luggage but I don't know the cycle and how long it will take to show up at that market place.

    Best!
