Can’t speak for them since I’m not a wren, but I’m guessing it shelters them from the cold winds? Also seems very cozy (like covering yourself in a blanket).
Use plastic boxes. These galvanized ones are toxic to birds. The oxidation from the zinc will be on the birds feathers and possibly be ingested when it preens. It's a tiny amount but could build up to harmful levels in the blood over time. I might be overly cautious, but I've worked with wildlife rehabbers, and metal poisoning is one of the more common problems we treated.
We need to find someone to model a 3D printed Sleepy Wren Box and upload the files for the birding community. Make it the size and shape of electrical boxes but cuter and less cold metal
The sleepy pinecones have moved off the porches & into empty electrical boxes. I may need to put a few empty ones out to attract the wrens.

They have to feel invisible 😍😍

Oh! Nice call. I had not thought about that.
If nothing else, metal gets a lot colder than plastic.
I would add some insolation, just for the sake of avoiding the metal, which transmits cold pretty well.
