I sooo wish there was an app/website to explore Chinese cities in 3D.

There is. Baidu map is free, but the 3D is animations only.

One thing I noticed looking around https://www.scraperbase.com/China/Changsha (very nice site btw) is this random supercluster of 50+ residential skyscrapers, quite interesting:

This is why I always wonder if Chinese cities are undercounted.

Changsha has more people than NYC city proper how would it be undercounted

    parent root
    3 points d_e_u_s

I mean, clearly on the satellite imagery there are quite a few unmarked buildings of similar or greater height to the other ones. This satellite is from October 2024. Scraperbase has Changsha at 152 skyscrapers, which is much more than CTBUH's 91. I feel like even the 152 may be significantly undercounted.

Oh I misunderstood yeah the amount of skyscrapers are definitely undercounted. I was there last year and there are tons of 300-500 foot residential towers that definitely aren’t tracked.

Chinese cities are known for overcounting not undercounting

Chinese cities aren't the ones doing the counting, CTBUH is. And they undercount.

They say Changsha has 91 skyscrapers. https://www.scraperbase.com/China/Changsha says they have 152, and that's where I got the pictured map from. Even 152 might be undercounted, considering that in the satellite image there are quite a few unmarked buildings (at the very bottom left) obviously of similar/greater height than the skyscrapers already marked. And this is just one specific residential district of the city.

20th biggest in America is Oklahoma City, at 680,000.

Cities in China are classified a lot differently than they are in the US and encompass much more territory. The closest you could get is by comparing metro populations in the US, and that wouldn't even work.

So, if you were even trying to approximate a comparison, which again, you really can't, OKC wouldn't be the 20th largest city in America. It's metro population is like the 50th largest city.

Never go by city population when comparing US cities to anything. It's so arbitrary when ranking the actual gravity of a city.

For the millionth time, you want to look at metros, not city proper. OKC metro is only the 42nd biggest. The 20th biggest metro is Orlando (which still isn't a very impressive skyline).

Changsha has over 10 million people too

The real question is where in the ranking would Changsha fall if it were in the US?

I'm in awe at what the Chinese have done. Apparently their cities are beautiful, clean and safe.

These lesser known Chinese cities are very impressive vertically, incomparable to any other cities. I just don't think they're special at all, they could be AI generated and I'd believe it.

Changsha is very special. It's well known for being the "city that never sleeps" of China. Full of young people and cool nightlife. I've been there and it's a very vibrant place.

So what cities would be known for certain climates. Like cool mountain city, warm beach city etc...

    1 points Beginning-Writer-339

Kunming and Xiamen fit those descriptions as well as having skyscrapers.

Most major Chinese cities have their fitting nicknames. Like Chongqing is “Mountain City, Fog Capital”, Kunming is “Spring City”, Guangzhou is “Flower Capital”, Jinan is “Springs Capital”, Shanghai “Magic Capital”, Xi’an and Nanjing are “Ancient Capital”.
