Only for him to decide to fight the Frost Troll that is in the cave on the way out..bare handed. He of course died. Sometimes I really wish NPC’s wouldn’t just charge into battle like that. Like dude.. you are clearly not equipped for this fight, stand back and let me handle it.

  • Of course he would have been weakened by his treatment at the hands of the Thalmor. Frankly this is one of the reasons I try to get The Stones of Barenziah quest out of the way early in the game, as one of them is in the case next to the dead mage, and getting it clears the way for doing embassy quest later.

I didn’t even know you could even get to that cave before getting the Thalmor quest. But seriously..who charges a frost troll, shirtless and with no weapons?

Someone who sees no other option? The position of the troll blocks the exit to the cave, which is unmarked and easily missed if you don't know it's there. Just be glad the guy isn't essential to any TG quests; can you imagine a quest where you have to go and rescue him from the Thalmor before dealing with Delphine?

You do not need to do the Thalmor embassy mission. In order to get the unusual gem/stone of barenziah. You can access Reeking cave from the road behind the embassy. Near IronBack Hideout.

I know, this is what I was saying; I go to the cave and finish the SoB quest before i start the main quest, taking out the frost troll in the process and clearing the way for Malborn and Etienne.

Oh. I misunderstood what you meant. Apologies.

All good, no harm done. :D Have a nice day.

I just realised a little hidden joke; the acronym for Stones of Barenziah is how most players feel about the quest, ie it's very much an S.o.B. :D

  • Classic Skyrim NPC moment right there lmao. Saved him from the Thalmor just so he could speedrun his own death against a frost troll with his fists - truly big brain energy

I literally screamed “Etienne, no!!“ at my tv like a psycho. I was actually looking forward to the little bit of dialogue you can get when you meet him again in the thieves guild. I swear I have the worst luck sometimes.. Malborn actually did the exact same thing in my last play through. This time around Malborn died but probably because I accidentally shot him in the face with an arrow during the fight with the Thalmor.

Yeah. I gave Lydia The Eye of Melka to hold because I was over encumbered. I had her using a two handed weapon, so I didn’t think she would equip/use the thing. Nope, we were in a cave and she damn near killed me and did kill herself.

  • I know that behavior well too much to know I should go first into the cave, kill the troll, eventually get the unusual gem, and get to my life. Later when I do the Thalmor Embassy quest, the troll will not be there.

Lat time I did this and it was smooth easy.

But I do remember one time Etienne was constantly jumping ahead to be killed by the troll. I reloaded the game a few times in a row and try my luck. I eventually got there first with a mix of fire magic and heavy weaponry to get his attention and kill him fast. But it took me a few attempts, tough.

  • It’s like the stupid civilians whenever a dragon or vampire attacks. They were all programmed with their aggression settings to max so instead of running away and letting the Godzilla Born and guard deal with the monsters, they all run in swinging their iron daggers like they’re Drizzt Do’Urden.

    Godzilla born..lmao

I shamelessly stole it from the Zero Punctuation Skyrim review. 😄

  • In my most recent playthrough, bro got one-shot by that Troll. I nearly died laughing lmao

I’ll admit I laughed too when it happened in mine. After I got done staring at my screen completely bamboozled.

  • You can deal with the frost troll before the diplomatic immunity quest. It’s quite the scene to enter a building then leave out of a cave with two wood elves and a thief.

That statement is highly ironic considering my character is a wood elf thief.

  • Spoiler. If you save him and part ways he ends up in dark quarter in Winhelm and has some cool dialog. I don't fully remember but might even have a side quest.

That’s Malborn who goes to windhelm. Etienne hangs out in the thieves guild headquarters if he survives

Guess I’ll never know because he decided he really wanted to die to that troll.

  • I cheated – when Delphine told me I'd have to go into the Thalmor Embassy, I cased the joint. I couldn't get in (damned gate had a key lock I couldn't break), but I walked all around the place. I found the little cave behind the place, and killed its troll. Still, I couldn't climb up into it, but the face the troll was dead already allowed me, Etienne, and the thoughtless d!(k, Malborn ("Now I'm going to worry about the Thalmor the rest of my life!"), were able to escape more freely.

I did think it was a bit silly that Etienne went running down the road in rags like he'd just won the lottery! 😀

That’s actually pretty smart. I’m directionally challenged so I wouldn’t be able to find it without a marker or hint of some kind though

  • Is this character mentioned above actually bad, I feel like I remember reading something online that says he’s a piece of crap or whatever. I killed him with sparks

I guess if you consider being a thief a bad thing then yeah I guess he’s bad.

Whoops you’re correct. I looked online and he’s just a member of the thieves guild. Good thing I’m doing an honest player this time.

An honest player who kills an unarmed man with electric magic?

Either he dies to me or he dies to the thalmor. At least I’m quick about it.

I would say you could have just freed him..

Nah cuz then he returns to the thieves guild, which I will actually be beheading soon - high king of Skyrim mod

    All of them?

Haven’t decided yet tbh. Might allow a few to live

I think you should let Sapphire live. If you know her backstory you’ll understand why.

  • Tell me about it. I've bonded with horses for like 30 levels and had them run to their doom like idiots.

I bought a horse for my Winstad Manor property and some bandits attacked and killed it.

    Arvak is best hormse

He's cool, but he's a little World of Warcraft for my taste.

Shadowmere is the best for tanking damage. I never really ride him but he definitely comes in handy in a fight

  • next time stock up in paralysis potion,be it for troll or Etienne

  • I learned a long time ago to run at least 10 feet ahead of any NPC I have to escort. They are all made of paper.

    I should have known..

  • One of the perks of playing on Legendary difficulty is that NPCs are 4x as tough and don't die so easily.

I also packed a ton of paralysis poisons specifically to keep the troll down.

I wouldn’t know, I play on novice mode. I like to have fun without bursting a blood vessel.

NPCs will take 2x damage compared to Adept when playing on novice.
