Try placing in storage within a home that you own, then wait a few days or a week just to be safe. Could also sell to a fence at the thieves guild and buy it back. Hope this helps.
Use the cabinets at Dragonsreach. Put the stolen items in there and then have your follower "take all." They should be un-stolen after that.
(It works with containers that are friendly -- like they were previously unavailable, and then someone says "thanks for the help, you're now welcome in my home.")
Drop it in front of someone, they may pick it up and give it to you, making you the owner, happened to me, I didn't realize i stole a book unnoticed, found the assuming owner, dropped it to give back, she walked up (you dropped this) and then it was mine
I hate Skyrim children they are the biggest thieves in the game as if you drop a stack of 2+ items and they come to give the items back then they give 1 back and pocket the rest.
What you want is a chest or container that was marked as "steal from" at the start of the game but became marked as "take from" after you made progress with the chest's owner. Then get a follower who won't steal for you, put your stolen items in that container and command your follower to take the items. That will remove the stolen tag.
A classic example and the one I use is Kodlak Whitemane's dresser at the end of the bed. At the start of the game it is marked as "steal from" but when you become the Harbinger it changes status. You can then get Farkas as a follower and ask him to take all from the dresser.
The only issue with it being stolen is that if you are arrested, you have to go to the chest that is usually close to the prison cells, to get your stolen items back.
Are they flagged stolen as soon as you collect them or did they one day just change their status?
I have no fix beyond what the other comments suggest I’m just curious
I gave them to Erandur one time and went a long period without him and came back to get my mace of molag bal but all of the weapons i gave him were all flagged "stolen". Ive tried the follower pick up trick but it didnt work
Just so you know, if you ever get skyrim SE on PC there are downloadable tools so you can copy your PS3 save over and make it compatible and simply continue!
give them back
To who?
City guards will handle that. Just turn yourself in
..but I'm just a tourist
Tourists don’t run.
I’ll take them

yep, selling to a fence then buying it back is always the fastest and easiest way to "clean" an item

Then you have some work to do before you can launder your weapons, don't you?
Michael Jackson stole my headpooonnnneeesss.
Give them back!
Eee eee eee eee!
Have you tried reverse pickpocketing onto some random enemy (like a bandit) then killing them? I think that's supposed to clear the status.
I never knew this worked!
“Officer I didn’t steal this item I killed the man holding it.”

Or they will fight to the death with someone over it.
Oh, dont need that lol
Don't drop anything valuable on the ground in Riften. That's where I remember seeing it happen.
Ok, thank you for the heads up

Have you tried selling items to a Fence and re-purchasing them immediately after?
(a Fence being an associate of the Thieves Guild that will buy stolen items, unlike normal vendors)
This is the way
There's also a wood elf in the college of winterhold that's a fence if you do something for him I think, it's been a while
Reverse pickpocket them into a bandit, execute, take lawfully gained loot by right of conquest
on pc you can just open console, click the item or the container where the item is, and type
setownership 7
Im on a ps3
That’s very bad for debugging sorry
Sell it and buy it back

Molag bal gonna put a curse on it but 10 time worse than what hircine did
well i can not see any receipt there?
Why would you steal from a Deadric Prince? Are you the Gray Fox?
Dupe it the copy should be clean

Sell them to the Thieves Guild then buy them back, that will fix it.
Um have you tried fencing them then buying them back?
Was going to say use a console command to drop the same items as fresh then pick them up but you're not on PC?
My computer dosent work and i've put more effort into the ps3 character than on my computer because i used to cheat alot when i was younger
Yeah im on a ps3

Just wait a few in game days for it to lose the stolen tag. So you dont end up giving some random bandit some fuckin daedric artifacts
