Seriously, stop posting these. Laser pointers, grapes, hands..anything that is taped to a fan is NOT a robot, and especially not a shitty one. The fan is doing its only job - being a fan. Just because some doofus taped some garbage to it doesn't mean it's suddenly a robot.
What if you tape a robot to a fan, is it no longer a robot?
[deleted]
If a small robot on roller skates had fan-hands, how powerful would they need to be for the robot to aim them behind itself and use them for propulsion?
I'm no engineer, but I'm going to say words like friction coefficient and air density to seem smart
I agree with this obviously very intelligent person. I would also like to say words like electrical current and hypotenuse of the real integers.
Can confirm your statement, but would like to add the words drag coefficient and uniform acceleration just for good measure
I can confirm all the above statements but I will mention the need for streamlining.
I would like to also remind you of airflow alignment.
I would like to disagree with comments 5 and 8 and bring to their attention the mitochondria is the power house of the cell.
I think we have just devised sufficiently detailed plans to build this robot.
Let's just say anything with tape on it is considered Taped
Taped fan robot
I’m a manager and can confirm these terms, but need a call-in meeting with our overseas engineers tomorrow morning.
Was your comment obtuse by design?

I've been there a few times, apparently it isn't okay to wire my triple reverse fliminator on the same rig as a quantum solid state chipset

Even a reflux capacitor exchange loop, there are safety issues
Ive been dying to post this video over there, but imagine it's a weekly repost, or if not should be.
That was spectacular.
Engineer here. You're going to want to make sure you hook up the turboencabulator with the flux vector pointing toward the magneto resonator, otherwise you'll get gyroscopic feedback that throws the thermovaristor out of calibration.
Positive void coefficient and hitting AZ-5
"Less useful"? Fan-bots would be amazing! It just follows you around and constantly cools you down. Perfect for a hot summer day. Although it only really works with moving robots.
Only if your robot is a laser pointer

OH MY GOD ITS ALMOST LIKE THE SUB IS CALLED SHITTY ROBOTS AH TURN DOWN THE SUN ITS TOO LOUD
Thank you. The fuck are people on about complaining something being too shitty in shitty robots? That's the whole point. If they're getting too repetitive then that's a valid complaint, but we shouldn't be litigating how shitty is too shitty
Not to mention that some of the highest posts of all time aren't shitty robots but rather good robots engineered to be shitty.
Wait, which one is expensive?
A fan is much more expensive than even a few servos
Yeah, definitely, I was worried that person was trying to say the opposite.
It's likely that people already have fans though, so it's effectively free.
The difference is the approach to lower the posting frequency of this sub from an average of 2 per day to a new record low of 1 per day. ^^
I'm pretty sure it's more of having a variety as opposed to the same thing reposted or repeated (you could call it "unoriginal OC").
yeah the suitcase moving up and down is riveting content
I missed that one. WTF?
its the second one on hot
Oh thanks. PFff I think that got upvoted because it was so stupid. XD
What if I tape a picture of Simone onto a fan?
BOOM ROASTED
Actually a robot is something that does a task repeatedly. The fan is a robot already, the modifications are robots.
I heard you like robots, so I taped robots to your robots so your robots can robot while they robot.
Hey, are you sure YOU aren't a robot?
If I am, I’m a good enough one to fool myself!
Ah HA!
That is not the definition of a robot.
Robots are moving parts
I was going to say this. Dude automated playing with his cat. Dude used inexpensive and poorly built methods to do so. A laser pointer taped to a fan is the best example of a shitty robot.
Bingo!
But if the fan can't click the "I'm not a robot"- captcha it must be a robot
This is something a fan with things taped to it would say
What if I tape a fan to my robot and have it follow a cat around?
Just remove them if you deem it as low quality.
Unfortunately (and it's true), but it's sort of on you mods (because you guys are the only ones with the power to) curate out low quality content.
Politely explain why, and if they contest, respond accordingly.
All those of us who like quality can't really do anything because for each of us who downvote, there'll be another 10 meta/circlejerk/blind followers who will upvote it (number varies from sub to sub).
One of the subs I ran used to be literally just torrent requests. Now it's only meta (to do with its topic/community) and related stuff. It's quiet and slow, but at least there's only helpful threads.
You guys have to decide on what you want the sub to be and rule with an iron fist.
If they attached the iron fist to a fan they could completely automate the process.
I think that they are robots, definitely, but the real issue is that they are not shitty robots so much as they are boring robots, and we come to this sub primarily to be entertained.
The spirit of the sub allows it. This sub is basically just filled with Chindogu with electronical devices to make it somewhat relatable to the idea of a robot. What is or isn't a robot is also highly debatable. The word comes from a time when a digital computer wasn't even a thing yet, but has now evolved to 'programmable machine that performs complex behavior' or something along those lines. I don't care either way, if something is low effort, downvote and move on.
You can't just apply the free market to anything and assume it'll work. Just because there is a high demand for utter garbage content (which there is) doesn't mean you should be satisfied or even allow garbage content.
Regulation is super important for a reason
I'm Bill Gates, I can apply the free market to whatever I want.
No you're Billy Joel, easy to get confused though its ok
oh
do you like pianos?
I love pianos. Wish I could play but listening to other talented pianists does me just right
No it's not even in the spirit of the sub! A fan is not even a robot! The problem with the "downvote and move on" mentality is it doesn't work when there are too many people upvoting it!! This is why reporting posts is a thing. Just because people want low-effort garbage doesn't mean the sub should change to fit that.
Try coming up with a definition that excludes stuff attached to fans, but allows stuff that Simone makes. Most of her stuff isn't programmable beyond a button press, so that's not a useful criteria.
Now, if we said we want to ban low effort robots, I'd be down for that.
I can't come up with a definition for that. I've already tried arguing for one and all I got was downvotes. At the very least, there needs to be a difference between a device and a robot. Strapping a laser pointer to a fan, smartphone, remote control, or car doesn't make it a robot.
Also, rule 5 for Simone even though yes, a lot of the stuff she's made aren't actually even robots.
Banana fan - not a robot
Cowbell turn signal - not a robot
Give a definition of robot instead of just claiming things aren’t robots.
A device consisting of one or more electronic parts that is designed to perform one or more specific tasks without human control.
Reciprocating fans definitely do that.
Complex or non-repetitive tasks?
The joy of robotics is not having to do repetitive tasks. And if you are unloading the definition into the word “complex” you probably should define it.
Multi-step tasks, not including mirroring the original task?
We could keep refining this for a while and it will inevitably get longer and longer. Non-repetitive needs more close synonyms. Non-cyclical? Nope. Still excludes robots that complete long tasks but repeat.
Because things that are low effort won't get downvotes if they are part of a current Reddit circlejerk/meme/meta. People will post and upvote the same garbage over and over to be part of the huehuehue joke and everyone else who doesn't care about that has to swim through a sea of garbage to find decent applicable content.
Humans always find a way to ruin something, moderation is always needed or most subs will fail.
Well that's what the community chooses to do
It isn't though, that's what a smaller yet enthusiastic portion of the community does. Some of the best subs on Reddit are curated against these temporary fads.
Why even have moderators then?
Hell, why even bother having subs at all?
[deleted]
I don’t care what you think. I like those posts and I’m going to make on myself. I have a pretty funny idea. Get fucked OP
Next you're gonna tell me DJ Roomba isnt a robot
Thank you. It's the same shit that Simone girl does. 90 percent of her "robots" is just shit hot glued to a fan.
Don’t be downvoting this. One user shouldn’t be granted special treatment just because she’s popular around here. That’s exactly the same logic everyone here is using when they say “Just because trash content gets upvoted doesn’t mean it should be allowed.”
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the occasional shitty fan, but there’s been a lack of quality SHITTY robots.
[removed]
This should really be the guiding principle.
You just had to ruin the fun, didn't you?
What if you tape a fan to a laser pointer instead of the other way round?
Pictures of a girl are also not robots, can we ban these as well?
bolts nunchucks to lawnmower blade You were saying?
Not with that attitude they're not.
oh thank god, they're so tiresome.
[deleted]
People just don't like it, and they confuse their dislike with "That's not a robot".
I have more of a gripe with posts that display non-shitty robots than forks attached to fans.
You have a strong opinion about this.
but... isnt a fan a robot whose job is to blow the air?
I think a robot is supposed to be able to react to environment, have some sort of sensors.
according to google, a robot operates on at least two axes with at least a slight degree of autonomy.
So, an oscillating fan.
Along with - robots that are literally designed to do something stupid are not shitty.
What happens if I tape something to an electrical fan?
WHAT HAPPENS IF THAT SOMETHING IS A SMALLER FAN? HUH?
What do you mean??
you get a metafan
Oh
smh robophobic mod
Stop gatekeeping the robot world ! #FansAreBotsToo
Wait did someone actually tape a grape to a fan and call it a robot?
It was an oscillating fan that fed its master grapes as she gamed.

You are a coward trying to escape from the truth
I'd rather have this than simones stuff in every damn post like how this sub used to be
Since it’s the automation of someone waving a palm frond, I would argue that it’s an immense automation.
But a robot is a set of simple machines cooperating in unison to achieve a desired result that neither could do alone. A laser and a fan are a bad example (read as low effort) of a shitty robot, but it is one nonetheless.
This is the kind of discourse I live for
What if you taped a fan to a shitty robot?
What if it is a robotic fan that shoots cats?
/r/totallynotrobots
r/robofans
Are bristle bots not allowed, either?
This sub hasn't been about actual robots for a long time.
What about a fan tapped to another fan?
What if... now hear me out. What if i tape a fan, to a fan?
I SEE I DO NOT BELONG HERE BECAUSE I AM A FAN WITH HANDS TAPED TO IT.
If everyone who upvoted this downvoted those, problem would be solved.
Not every simple machine is a robot.
[beep boop blorps in agreement!!]
What if u tape razor blades to a fan and then tape the fan to a roomba?
The strict definition of robot is a machine that resembles a human and can replicate actions done by a human so I'd say 95% of what's posted here aren't robots
Ban anyone who does this again
I am a fan of this post, therefore I am not a shitty robot.
What if the robot is ALSO a fan???🤔
What if it's a metal fan and you weld things to it?
What if you draw a smiley face on the fan and give it a name/backstory?
Agreed. It must at least have glue-on googly eyes.
I feel like that disqualified a lot of Simone's earlier robots.
Took you long enough lol
Seems someone taped a giant dick on your forehead.
What if it has a remote??? That's a robot. Prove me wrong.
Guess you're not a fan of a fan with tiny fans taped to the fan blades that fan you while the fan fans?
What is a robot but a mechanical thing that moves? I contend that all fans are robots, and our submissions are of specialized fan-style robots.
Edit: Full disclosure, I am the one who submitted the grape robot.
Jumping in this thread because I don't know where else to ask a question -- Can someone link me to that video from earlier this week where the baby doll head was singing some wackadoo song ("ba ba ba"), wearing a plant on it's head and playing keyboard? I'm wondering if it was taken down because I'm not sure there was any actual "robotics" involved, but I've been looking for the video all morning.
Thanks!

What's the difference between a robot and a puppet?
Pretty sure a fan is a robot, my dude. Therefore taping some garbage to a fan, by definition, makes it a shitty robot.
/end semantic argument
Not all machines are robots.
#NotAllMachines
Robot: A machine or device that operates automatically or by remote control.
A lot of people do not consider RC devices robots.
I don't.
But then how can it be robot fightin time?
Make them autonomous.
I've never heard of anyone accusing a remote controlled airplane of being a robot.
I would say that most fans do not fit that definition because they are activated and deactivated by pushing a button or toggling a switch.
Means of a activation is not a solid argument. I’m not convinced as to a fan’s roboticity, but a roomba having an off button doesn’t make it less of a robot.
My guess would be the definition hinges on something like complexity of action and level of autonomy.
Agreed.
Are you saying that an initiation mechanism disqualified something from being a robot?
If that’s the case then robots do not exist
I'm saying that pushing a button to make a thing do a thing isn't automatic or remote. It's literally manual and proximity dependent.
Just wondering where you got that definition, since I can't seem to find it.
Mirriam-Webster says a robot is
A ceiling fan is just a machine. If a fan is a robot, then pretty much every machine is a robot. A car engine would be a robot by your definition. A refrigerator would be a robot. An air compressor would be a robot.
Not all robots are machines
Tape a dirty baby diaper to a fan, and you've got a shitty robot!
