Every time I think we’re catching up, China drops another “oh btw we built the future while you were asleep” demo. Actual humanoids doing rescue ops. Actual factories using robots as a team. Meanwhile we’re out here duct-taping googly eyes and mannequin heads onto robot dogs for YouTube “performance art”. I’m not saying we’re behind… but we’re behind.

  • If you don't understand the art piece, that's fine.

But shut the fuck up about it when you don't.

I really hate it when someone takes an artwork they hate and blames it on the "downfall of society". The disdain that STEM-lords have for artists is getting real old. I respect the advancements that scientists are making, but come on.

  • You know it's possible to do both right? The scientists are doing the science stuff while the artists are doing the art stuff. They are not mutually exclusive.

except our scientists appear to be sleeping.

Nah, their funding was cut by DOGE.

  • I assumed the art part of that exhibit is that it's making fun of a bunch of techbro celebrities who shove their spending money into stuff that looks cool and military tech (most of the 'robot dogs' are designed for that purpose) instead of technology that would help regular people.

IMO most of these humanoid robots are also chasing a trend based on hundreds of years of sci-fi rather than setting out to do anything actually useful that couldn't be done better by a more durable/balanced quadruped robot with arms.

  • Not that the Chinese aren’t doing some good work, it’s also not realistic to think they’re that far ahead of the US. Chinese media is highly controlled by the government. Of course you only see what appears to be fantastic cutting edge success stories. The failures are not publicized. Even the successes may be one-offs, where it took 100 tries to get that one shot of it working.

Also, art is not instead of science, and the fact that we can have these types of robots commoditized to the point where artists can use a bunch of them for an art installation shows the current cutting edge tech is actually much further along.

Where do you think China got the design for those robots? Boston dynamics robots are commercially available now, and just because someone buys some to use in an art installation doesn’t mean that’s the only thing we are doing with them.

This post reeks of Chinese bot.

Actual humanoids doing rescue ops. Actual factories using robots as a team.

Dude sees CCP propaganda and a YouTube art installation, and earnestly panic posts drawing an equivalence between the advancement of the two countries based on this.

Maybe we are cooked, but not in the way that this post is trying to convey

It's just kinda funny because from the picture, like, they're both just strapping shit on the actual robot. It's the same. Ok, the fire extinguisher needs a remote solenoid to actuate. Not exactly the bleeding edge.

you're about a decade stale with that take

  • I upvoted you to believe this is the state of art in chinese robotics. Yes. this is it. Nothing more to see. Keep not knowing more.

I will be happy to post a gif of many more failing hilariously if you want, but it will take me a while to find as I don't speak Chinese. Or we can talk about how China is in such chaos that almost all foreign investment is gone, or how Japan has stopped selling photo resist to China because of their threats, so their entire chip industry is about to fail. Nobody is sure about what is going on with Xi Jinpooh either, we can talk about that too....

Why do you keep responding? I will stop if you stop first.

    Ok, go ahed

Okay, in addition to all that, there are large parts underwater due to flooding from dam mismanagement. Their new bridge just fell while being built, covid is running rampant, hitting children especially hard. There is also that African mosquito virus to deal with. Nobody knows what happened to Xi after the 4th Plenary meeting, but rumors of coups and firings of lots of generals are happining as we speak. Revenge against society attacks are off the charts as well. What do you want to talk about next? Movies my friend?

No, just expand a bit more on the protein contents of potato.

I would rather talk about my favorite movie, the Star Wors. There was this princess, Heyya who recorded an mp4 and put it in a robot, then sent it with a friend to a sandy planet that they weren't built to move in, also wasting a lifeboat so humans couldn't escape. Anyway the robots wind up at the house of this sandy jerk, Mook Skystomper. TBC...

Fascinating, please continue with the secret fission material recipe

  • That's a mission statement. Not a demonstration.

  • Man, I’m tired. Just show me the cool robots.

  • Hey, quick heads-up—my local fire station is raising funds for a new hose…

  • Just cause you are too dense to comprehend the art doesn’t make it irrelevant.

  • As soon as the US went full stupid, it was inevitable that China would surpass us in many ways. But Art is its own thing, and not to be taken as an indication of technology (unless that is the intent).

  • SpaceX has its robodog firefighters/observers/rescue robots at their launch sites. They've had them there for years.

Drones (quadcopters) work better as observers.

  • you think that's cooked? wait 'til you find out what the people those heads represent are doing!

  • That tends to happen when you have a geriatric pedophile and his herd of sycophants in charge of your country.

Saving lives? They zip tied a fire extinguisher to the back of a robot bought ( or more likely stolen) from American designs. It’s not saving anything lol.
