Hi everyone,

I acquired a (piece of crap but functional) sewing machine over the summer, and took on this challenge as a first real project. It took me about a month to draft the pattern and sew it together (on the occasional evening night).

In the end the fit is not perfect, but since I have weird body proportions anyway, it actually ends up being comparable to shirts I buy from regular clothing stores. The fabric is cotton, actually more of a decoration fabric, but I really liked the pattern. Overall I am very happy how this first project turned out.

Any tips (or praise 😉) from more experienced folks, would be greatly appreciated.

  • Toile de jouy in a men's shirt, it's a nice change of pace. And the silhouette is pretty great too, whether the fit is perfect or not. One bit of advice about decor fabric: the inks aren't stable and they do tend to fade in the wash, so either hand wash cold and hang to dry, or dry clean the shirt to protect the crispness of the print.

  • That looks very decent for a not perfectly fit shirt, you'll get this down pat with some more shirts done!

  • Feel like 70s. You got good hands mate

  • Pattern matched on the front. Praise!

    Came here to say this!

  • I'd happily buy and wear a shirt like this, it's right up my street. Love the fabric too.

Congrats on making a wearable and good looking garment. I wish I could do this! :)

  • That is brilliant, whatever do you see wrong with it?

    Haha thanks.

What I don't show in the picture, is the mess of the button holes, because my machine doesn't have a setting for them. I had to freehand the smallest zig-zag stich, and well... it's not as pretty up-close.

Also the sides raise a bit, when I lift my arms. It's a lot better than it used to be, but then again, I ripped and resewed all the stitches in the arms/shoulder area about 4 times 🤪. I still feel like I could shorten the yoke a bit and lengthen the arms a smidge.

All I see is pattern matching across the button placket! Well done!

  • Was this made from a table cloth?

I'm not sure, I bought the fabric from a German website, which used the name "Dekostoff". I don't really know anything about fabrics tbh. From the hand feel, it's indeed something that probably be better suited for a table cloth or the outside of a sofa cushion.

It should feel good to the touch.

  • Nice work on the placket and sleeves!!

  • Very nice! you can tweak the fit in the future. Using a random fabric is the way to go for a test project, as you now have a wearable "muslin."
