Here is the pattern I based it off of https://www.etsy.com/listing/951859074/3-way-balaclava-new-pattern-make-your?ref=shop_home_feat_3&sr_prefetch=1&pf_from=shop_home&bes=1&dd=1&logging_key=427f1b44ca804e8a676506b00da4b914179d652b%3A951859074
I have many thoughts. I liked that the mask can be pulled up and down, and that it sinched, as opposed to a more ski mask like balaclava. I made a ton of adjustments based on the reviews from the etsy listing. Also the pattern low key kinda sucked direction wise.
I removed the chest piece entirely, and made the main piece go down further, and then cut slits on the side so that it looks like a rectangle on front and back, if that makes sense. I also first hemmed the bottom edge with bias tape, which helped a lot with preventing it from getting stretched out on that stretchy end. I connected the mask part only to the interior so the seem cannot be seen from the outside. Also, this pattern is really meant for people to wear while skiing, and while wearing a helmet, so I had to make the hood less big, basically I rounded off the part on the back of the head to have less room.
Also, if anyone wants to make this, the fabric makes a huge difference. I made a mockup with regular fleece (the lowkey shitty kind, but it was a remnant and therefor cheap) and it is stiff and uncomfortable. This finished guy is made from Polartec Windbloc (https://www.polartec.com/fabrics/weather-protection/windbloc) from my local fabric shop. I got it for only like 15 a yard and half off sale so the project was only like 25 bucks for fabric, thread, ties, and some bias binding. This fabric is delightful, warm and moved well. I think my friend really likes it, and will get a lot of use out of it this winter!
I plan to make my own hood but am thinking of making it like a liripipe since I've seen a couple of posts about those recently!
Also I used my moopsy plush to hold it up for the picture :) Perfectly normal creature (if you know you know).
TLDR: etsy patterns can be good, but also can be hard to work with :/

Is your friend moopsy? Careful he drinks bones…
Om nom nom 😁
This looks awesome! I am working on making these for my kids. What did you use to make the holes for the pull string?
I had some leftover eyelet things from corset making. The joys of hoarding tiny objects for years "just in case"! Like these, just gotta make sure it's big enough for the string to make it through! https://www.wawak.com/garment-construction/eyelets-grommets/tools/dritz-eyelet-kit-w-tool-14/#sku=plr12sl Also yup looking at the picture you can't see it at all 😂 oops
In my mockup I just make a button hole and that also worked but should be reinforced before you make it
