What is this machine. What should I search for if I want to buy it online? The link to the video is https://www.facebook.com/share/r/17tsCCWL8k/
The moderator bot wants me to post this here instead of making a post,
I've been borrowing a Singer E99670 from a family member that I need to return, so I want to get my own machine. This machine has done everything I want, except patching holes in pockets. I know the proper way to patch pockets from various videos, but I don't have the time to do it and currently don't have the skill. Is there a sewing machine with a really narrow bobbin case that would fit in a pocket?
Does anyone know how to sew these ripples into mesh and what it’s called?

Is this Montgomery Ward UHT J1960 sewing machine worth $100 at the thrift store if it’s in great working condition? Should I pick up or keep looking?
I think it is expensive for a used machine but you may live in a higher cost of living area than I do. Look for comparable machines with similar features and age in your local resale market to see if it looks like a good price. It may need servicing, so take a look at the cost of a cleaning and tune-up and factor that in when you make your decision.
Today on my way home from work I found this old sewing machine in front of someone’s house with their garbage. The woman who lived there saw me looking at it and told me it still worked last she checked but it’s old and she doesn’t really sew. The only problem is that it snowed bad last night and might’ve damaged it. When I found it was covered in snow, dirt, and cobwebs. Here’s how it looks after letting it defrost and lightly cleaning it. Just curious if it’s worth getting any repairs if needed rather than buying a whole new machine. I make custom dolls and have been sewing their clothes by hand for a while so it would be nice to have an actual sewing machine. I don’t know much about sewing machines so this is kinda a whole new world to me.

Possibly? There should be information on a tag giving the model number. Search on that to find reviews for the machine. You might also search at r/vintagesewing for more information.
My wife was gifted a White 1855 sewing machine & we can't find anything about this particular model. Its free to us and shes so excited but wants to know more about the machine.
First step is to locate a copy of the manual. Google brought this up.
Thank you!
We actually found one!!

Accidentally ripped my jeans!! Is there any way to mend them?
It can be repaired but it is a little tedious. I suggest that you unstitch the corner of the pocket, apply a patch following this tutorial, then stitch the pocket back into place.
I’m using my new to me Singer UltraLock 14U64A. The front stitching is looking good (I think) but the back is not. The left needle thread is very loopy on the back (red thread). I’ve gone over the threading a million times but I can’t figure it out. Any suggestions?
https://preview.redd.it/duvw72gdtr9g1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d93e5c33663015303761406aeb428137521c19c
It could be a tension issue. I like to refer to this article on serger tension by DIBY to troubleshoot. Note that even if your tension dials are perfect, it could still be a tension issue caused by mis-threading as every threading point add a bit of tension to the thread. So concentrate your efforts on the thread path of that thread (I think it is the lower looper) if adjusting tension doesn't work.
2 questions. first, not sewing, just reddit; i tried to join, and reddit error just said "something went wrong." any clue?
second real sewing question, i'd like to make an attractive cover for my mattress foundation (basically a fitted bedskirt). is there a word for that? a pattern or guidelines i can get somewhere?
Reddit likes to glitch. Options are to try again later, or try a different platform like the app if you tried on the platform first or vice versa. Sorry about that.
Yes - put 'make a fitted bedskirt' into a search and you'll get multitudes of tutorials!
I've made one for a king bed. I first did it by making and sewing a ruffle to a king size flat sheet. Yes, it worked. But when flipping the mattress it was a pain-in-the-arse.
So I ended up cutting away most of the flat part. I left about 12" to go under the mattress. I then secured it to the box spring with t-pins.
Much easier!
While there will be a lot of fabric to deal with no matter how you do it, it is a satisfying project when done.
Anyone have a recommendation for a basic repair sewing kit? I’m talking just basic needle and threads.
I feel like all the kits sold on like Amazon or at Walmart are junk. The spools of threads are bleh. The case is bleh. Basically everything is kinda bad.
Maybe I need to buy each thing, but I gotta imagine there is a decent kit made by someone/company.
I saw this Singer kit at my local Walmart (currently out of stock there).
If I didn't already have everything I need, I'd have picked it up. I thought it looked like a decent quality kit.
Hello! I have a Janome DC5100, I was wondering if it is okay to sew heaver materials like cordura with it. I'm afraid that I might break it. Thanks!
It's okay to give it a try. You'll want to make sure that you use a bigger needle of the appropriate type. Coated materials like cordura can be usually need a microtex or sharp needle. Try sewing first on a scrap by turning the handwheel to see how easily the needle pierces the fabric. Then try sewing with the pedal, going slowly at first. Keep an eye on your machine, is it straining to make stitches? A little straining is fine. What you don't want is skipped stitches, the needle getting bent sideways, or anything that just looks wrong. It can be useful to use the hand wheel to move through thick spots like crossing over seams. But if all goes well, your machine won't mind at all and go through thicker materials like butter.

Automod deleted my pattern request post but does anyone have anything for this style of halter neck?
I don't have a pattern recommendation (there is a guide in the post to finding patterns) but I would approach it by mostly taking apart a pair of jeans and laying a pattern over them with key features intact. I'd also do a test run with a pair of jeans I didn't like.
I got both a Singer Prisma Heavy Duty and a Brother LX3817 from different people on opposite sides of my family for Christmas, which one is more beginner friendly?
With all honesty, Singer HD machines are not beginner friendly as they run fast and break easily. I'm not super impressed with the Brother LX3817 either as Brother machines generally don't become reliable until about the $200 price point. If you can return both, I suggest doing so and buying a Janome or Brother with the combined funds. Otherwise, try each out and see which you like better.

Long shot but hopefully someone can help.
I bought this from someone at work. When I took it out today, I noticed the reverse button was not attached.
Anyone familiar with this model? It’s 5825c singer school model.
Will a replacement button fix the issue? Is there something else missing besides the button? Searching online didn’t yield many results.
What is this part and where should I put it like between what, the instructions doesn’t say that

What part are you talking about? Are you asking where a piece should be placed for cutting or for sewing? The pink diagrams are showing cutting layouts for fabric, not sewing instructions.
the sleeve bottom/lower part and where should I put it when sewing This are the instructions. Thank you

Those instructions are so sparse and not helpful!! I did see another photo of the dress that utilizes the lower part, which makes me think you could do a Juliet sleeve. I haven't sewn a Juliet sleeve before so don't really know how they go together, but it looks like there are a lot of YouTube tutorials.

Can you guys plz help me with buying an old vintage 2nd hand sewing machine, I want to know what things to check while buying a full shuttle vintage sewing machine which is refurbished and what should be the best price to buy
Hex Key Size for White Speedylock 1634
I unfortunately snapped a needle on my secondhand serger which I don't have the accessory kit for so I don't have the hex key needed to replace the needle. Does anyone know what size is needed for the White Speedylock 1634? I have a large set of hex keys but the 1/16 one is too big and 0.05 is too small.
You might need a metric hex key set rather than imperial.
I'm looking for a machine that: - can sew buttonholes - can sew in reverse - has a horizontal bobbin
It will be used for clothes sewing.
I've been sewing on a friend's Husqvarna Viking Lily 545, which isn't sold any more, and like this machine.
Any recommendations on similar machines to look at? Budget $2000 AUD.
Not only is the Husqvarna Viking Lily not sold any more, Husqvarna was sold to SVP and is no longer made in Sweden. I don't think that current Husqvarna machines are of the same quality but they are still quality machines. It's worth a visit to a Husqvarna dealer to try out current models if you have a local sewing machine shop. With your budget, you are well into dealer territory and it is worth looking at the benefits of buying at a dealer. I would also look at Janome and Babylock. I have a Husqvarna of the same vintage as the Lily and I found that Berninas feel a lot different as do Pfaffs, but you'll only know what feels right by test driving machines for yourself.
Hello! Im breaking out my singer for the first time in a year (or so) because I have a little project I want to do! It’s nothing major and I COULD do it by hand but I’ve never been too god at making sure the knots stay in and whatnot. When I’ve plugged in the power and the foot pedal, the light gets dim and there’s a sharp whining noise (although the picture isnt that good). Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
https://preview.redd.it/98n3kxo14g9g1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95aa9fe53034eb59a86fa7c71295c2d83c57335b
Sharp whining noise could be a belt slipping. Or. . .is your bobbin winder engaged?
bobbin winder has been both engaged and unengaged (i thought it might be engaged at first) but it makes that noise regardless! i have tried to take my machine apart but there appears to be some screws i cannot see that are stopping me from taking off the covers to see the belts. i think i might hand it off to a professional and do my project by hand because i dont wanna break it :(
Then I suspect a loose or stretched out belt. And with light dimming I think taking your machine to a tech is your best plan. Good luck!
Hello, I'm new to sewing and I'm completely in love with square looking padded shoulders double breasted coat like YSL. I don't really know where to search for sewing patterns, could anyone advise me please ?
https://preview.redd.it/yc01jwq5rf9g1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95f777061d5f583770d166566d68ebc51bb1e136
Ebay is a treasure trove of vintage patterns.
coats like that are definitely something you want to work your way up to, skill wise. a lot of complicated tailoring goes into making a coat like that, and the material to get a good result is very expensive and hence not something you want to do your first practise sewing on. it's also a thick and therefore difficult to sew and handle neatly. i would probably do something like boxy shirt -> unlined unstructured jacket -> lightweight jacket with some tailoring details and lining -> first try at coat. combined with a lot of reading about classic tailoring construction techniques along the way.
that said, the silhouette is quite vintage, so the first place i would look is vintage vogue designer collaboration patterns on e.g. etsy or various auction sites. one that immediately come to mind is this claude montana pattern. for patterns to work on along the way, simplicity.com sells the "big 4" patterns, and you can find a lot of indie patterns on e.g. threadloop. check out the master post on avoiding ai scam patterns if you go on etsy for indie patterns.

Hellooo people. I saw smth on the web today and want to do that for my boyfriend. The problem is: I don't have a clue on stitching/sewing. Could you recomend some YT channel or online blog that could help me out?

If you're referring to the Nike/candy cane situation, that looks like (unfinished) embroidery, not sewing.

Hi! This is the lodestar tree topper from mmmcrafts. A while ago I found a free pattern that looked similar but now I can’t find it. Anyone know of a free version?
When am I most likely to be able to find an adjustable dress form on sale? I'm looking at the Dritz Sew You, but am wondering if it ever goes on sale. Thanks!
Hello everyone!!!
I have a Singer Confidence machine my mom gave to me and unfortunately she has lost the pedal somewhere in our house so it’s impossible to find :((((
The question is this: Any pedal is compatible with any machine, or there are categories I have to look for? I’m searching to buy a new one because I’m really excited to use it and I don’t want to take one not working:((
(I’m new to sewing and I don’t know much about the terminology, so I’m sorry if I didn’t use the right words:pp)
It has to be a pedal for that machine and aftermarket pedals are out there.
Check out the offerings on SewingPartsOnline
.
If you're uncertain about your exact model, contact them before buying.
Got my first sewing machine and every time I sew it does this. I’m following the instructions, I’ve tried different stitches. Idk what to do.

What brand and type of thread are you using?
I fixed it I just threaded the machine wrong
Oh good :)
I have a Pfaff Ambition 610 that uses Type K (Google says this is the same as class 15) plastic bobbins. I've always bought those labeled as original Pfaff replacements. Lately they've been warping, for lack of a better word. The flat flange part bends (warps) up away from the thread. Does this happen over time and I just need replacement bobbins? Or is there something wrong with how my machine winds them? Also, are replacements from Wawack good?
Thanks so much! And happy holidays however you celebrate ❄️☀️
https://preview.redd.it/j817amus079g1.jpeg?width=1360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db70ee54fd533ca1d9f79ffce9e9d26faaaf4268
I have the same machine and haven't seen that happen on my bobbins. How are you storing them?
Wawak is a reputable vendor.
Thank you for the reply! I usually store them lying next to the thread spool that's in my sewing cabinet drawer. Sometimes they're in a separate bobbin box. Nothing too harsh or unusual.
Hello! I just celebrated my birthday and received two new sewing machines separately. I have no sewing experience but have an interest in learning how to sew so I will be very beginner.
Help me choose which one to pick and which one to return! I am most interested in tailoring/mending current clothes and working my way up to fun clothes sewing projects, and going from there.
Machine #1 Singer M1150
Machine #2 Brother XR9550
Thank you in advance!!
I will always choose a Brother sewing machine over a Singer. As a brand, Singer is coasting on their reputation and is not beginner friendly. There is a list of reasons why in the machine buying wiki linked about in the main post. Brother machines are a great choice for a beginner and should work for you for quite a while.
Hi!
I am looking into teaching myself to sew. I have zero experience in it and mainly want to be able to hem pants and make simple garments.
What machine would you recommend?
I had done some research and just a bit confused if a “heavy duty” machine is absolutely needed to hem jeans and such? Or would a heavier needle just cover this with any machine?
Thank you so much for your help!
Sewing machines can vary quite a bit in their ability to pierce layers of heavy fabrics. Good technique like heavier needles, hump jumpers, reducing bulk and pounding thick layers. But not all machines will rise to the occasion. If you want to be sure, there is a list of machines in the machine buying wiki linked in the main post at the top of the thread.
Any resources for print Cotton Spandex/Lycra fabric at a decent price?
I used to get mine from GirlCharlee, but ever since they opened again, the quality of prints has gone sharply downhill and they haven't added new ones for at least 6 months. I used to pay $4-7 a yard for the cutest cotton spandex prints on there.
Any suggestions?
I picked up a few yards from Fashion Fabrics Club not too long ago.
My sewing machine constantly gets stuck
So I took the Bobbin holder out of the machine to clean it up a bit and when I put it back it won’t sew anymore and it broke a needle … how do I fix this? I watched a LOT of tutorials on how to reassemble the bobbin holder and it looked like I did it right but it keeps getting stuck no matter what material I use. The model is a singer c5950
here’s a video of what happens when I try sewing one of my scrap fabric pieces:

Take it to a repair shop!
I'm hand-sewing a little plushie for a gift using this old tutorial I found on Pinterest (the link is just the full image, it's just very long so I didn't want to upload it directly). Is anyone able to tell me how they attached the limbs? And is that better to sew them on afterwards or should I somehow stitch them with the body?
It looks like they are handsewn on ( maybe with a ladder stitch?) right along the seam where the shell meets the body. However, this seems like a lot harder process than just sewing them on when doing the shell seam. It's really not a great way to sew on limbs.
The limbs should actually be one piece of fabric with the body. Try to find a pattern like that in the future.
Bobbin thread does not get picked up by top thread when I crank handwheel (singer heavy duty)
Hi there! I’m very new to sewing, but have used my machine before to hem curtains and clothing for a while.
I Likely did something wrong because now the bottom thread (black thread) does not get picked up by top beige thread when I crank hand wheel towards me like in this YouTube video at 2:58 : https://youtu.be/iMN1ZaMg0eg?si=glmKGE5qeY1QTngk
If I try to sew, no thread goes into the fabric.
I tried replacing the needle with the ones that came with the machine, I’m using class 15 bobbins that also came with my machine.

i am new to sewing with a machine and I recently got a singer model 758, i followed a video on how to thread it but whenever i try to use it this happens and the bottom portion jams. any tips on what i’m doing wrong?

It's almost certainly threaded incorrectly. Try again!!
I keep running into the issue of my thread getting knotted on the inside of the machine and my needle keeps coming unthreaded. I’m new to sewing and this is super frustrating as a beginner i have everything threaded correctly as far as i’m aware. i’m just trying to get the hang of this to alter clothes in the future.please let me know what you think i might be doing wrong.

I have the same faux leather jacket as pictured above (not my pic), its starting to peel and looks like it will just deteriorate more even if I repaired the small sections. Is it possible to remove all the faux leather and replace with new material?
The jacket has lining. You could take it apart, keep the lining and re-make the jacket.
I am discovering that faux leather is not very durable and seems to flake very easily these days.
Hi! I'm gifting my girlfriend a sewing machine and i want her to be able to learn with it and wanted to get her something that could last her long. I don't think she's sure about everything she wants to do with it as of now but i want to gift her one where she's free to learn.
I recently bought a new Brother CX70PES on amazon for 237€ (i just placed the order and could refund) but i recently got in touch with someone who could offer me a barely used Husqvarna Lily 540 for 160€ with all the accesories it comes with.
Which one is the better choice for a beginner and for something that will last her long?
Thank you

Does anyone know what kinds of foots these are?
Hi r/sewing
I picked up a Singer 4411. I have limited experience with sewing machines, but pretty sure I can get better with some practice. Not planning on anything super advanced, just wanna learn how to do some basic jeans repairs at the moment.
The foot pedal is not super responsive. It gets a bit stuck, or to be more precise, it doesn't give very tactile control - it's hard to make the machine go pretty slow.
Is this a limitation of this specific machine, or did I get a lemon, or is this user error? (always a strong possibility with a newbie!) If you have a 4411 - how smooth is yours?

I have an Elna Elina40 sewing machine. I love it but it struggles with heavier fabrics and I can't control the speed the way I can on the matching overlocker. I would love a sewing machine that is built into a table with a big treadle foot but I don't know where to start. any recommendations would be very much appreciated TYSM!

So, my fiancé has been expressing an interest in sewing. She’s artsy and creative and never wants anything for herself, just our kids. I really want to make this Christmas special for her, so I bought her this sewing machine. It’s not the fanciest or anything but I know she’ll love it. I’m just wondering what else I should get her so she can enjoy it day one. I already have a gift card for fabric store, but I’m sure there must be other things I can get her so she’s ready to go right out of the box. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! I am so in love with the silhouette of the Floret Skirt in Denim from As Ever. Does anyone have any pattern ideas for something like it?
I feel like that style is super popular right now. How about I AM Patterns Lotus, Wardrobe by Me Front Button Skirt, sew.lala Martha skirt, Sew Liberated Estuary, or FibreMood Alix (more pleated than gathered, but similar shape)?
Is a brother LS 1217 a nice machine to buy for my teen for Christmas? I found a used one for $65 (US). He may want to work with fur at some point and make a quilt.
Sewing machine advice
With the increases cost of clothing ive decided to come and try to make my own, specifically jeans, jackets, ect- stuff that easy sells for hundreds. Ive watched my fair share of videos and am excited to start creating; the only setback, a sewing machine. Ive watched videos declaring stinger to be the best, or the worst. Im here asking for advice on what machine I should get. Im looking for something heavy duty to do jeans along with a single button maker thingy - idk the right name for it, but a button maker that I dont have to do myself - any advice for the 100-250 dollar range would be appreciated. Is this sewing machine missing a crucial piece? when I try to load the bobbin I’m lost in the YouTube tutorials and think I’m missing some guide to loop the thread. It’s a singer stylist
I have a Singer Serger 14SH644/654 - i have rethreaded the machine multiple times following youtube tutorials, but something is off because it’s not chaining at all.
The lower looper thread deviates from the others, so something must be wrong with it.
Gah!!!

I have a continental electric sewing machine and I'm having issues with this part. I have rethreaded everything multiple times and sometimes it will stitch then just stop. I'm new to sewing and I just dont know what I'm doing wrong.
I just purchased the Janome Lovely Lilac for my 10 year old daughter 2nd hand from Offerup. It didn't come with the normally included 'starter kit' so I was hoping to replace it somehow. I contacted Janome and they don't sell the normally included accessories by themselves. Can any experts help inform me on what from the list below I should purchase? I believe I already have the Foot Control but that's it. Thanks for your time!

You'll want the zigzag foot zipper foot, buttonhole foot and bobbins that fit the machine. Hopefully the food controller is included in your purchase or the machine will be unusable until you find one. You can buy these parts from Janome or most generic low-shank snap-on feet will work.
Other sewing accessories like a seam ripper, extra machine needles, tape measure, pin cushion, straight pins, hand sewing needles, scissors, thread are available at big chain department stores, craft stores or online. Wawak.com is a good place to buy sewing notions online. Check that the bobbins you find are plastic and compatible with this Janome model.
Please help me source the correct Max Mara buttons for a vintage jacket. TIA!

I love these sources for buttons, maybe you’ll find something similar:
https://farmhousefabrics.com
https://embellishtrims.com/
And Mood, of course!
You need to know the size of the button for replacement. Wawak.com carries a wide assortment of buttons and there are several that could work. The odds of finding the exact same buttons is low.
So let me ask you this. I have the tortoise shell interior buttons that I think are the exterior ones, so how can I determine the appropriate size for the cuff buttons?
If there are existing buttonholes, size your buttons to fit them. Flat buttons are usually about 1/8 inch or 3mm smaller than the buttonhole opening. If the buttonholes are not cut open, go with the size that looks proportional.
Maybe I’m not using the correct words. The cuff button are decorative on this jacket, like a sport coat for men. So no concept if that’s a standard size. I can’t speak to only visually compare online to pics of similar jackets from the brand.
Then you have more information than I do. There is no particular rule of thumb for sizing cuff buttons, as I said it is either based on the size of the buttonholes or it's a matter of taste. Men's sport coats usualy have uncut buttonholes to use as a guide to size.
It's common to replace all the buttons on a jacket at the same time as it is hard to match new to existing buttons. So you can do that by picking a button that comes in multiple sizes like the link I gave already, or finding replacement buttons on a resale site like ebay where someone might sell a damaged jacket for parts.
Thank you.
How can I alter a faux leather jacket? The sleeves are slightly too big and long and I would like it to fit more snugly on me. I don’t know if I should sew it or even how to sew it or if I should get fabric glue? I don’t know how to do anything with faux leather
You can sew faux leather. Use a longer stitch length and a microtex needle with all-purpose polyester thread. The stitche holes are permanent so get it right the first time. If you are not confident, take it to an alterations specialist.
Can I hand sew it? You think that would work?

I think you've done the troubleshooting that you can at home and it is time for a professional cleaning and service.
