Drag marks on the carpet are a big problem

If someone isn’t put off by the entrance with the random semi-feral cats, they’re quickly going to go “wait this building is like 3x the size on the outside but there’s no door”.

Which is a good lesson for secret compartments: hide things someplace people don’t want to look. Nobody minds looking at a bookshelf to find a panel gap that’s out of place and a book that conceals a latch. But nobody wants to go digging through attic insulation, hoarder trash bags, or cat litter.

Obviously nothing posted to this sub is going to stay hidden from a forensic team with days to search. But even your average crackhead is going to see that squalor in this post and just nope out.

Having a secret room in a very poor area makes sense to me. Having a second one might be a bit much especially if I need to get on the ground to go get some food.

    parent
  • 232 points theblueslothking

The second secret room: for when you like someone enough to show them your secret room, but not enough to share snacks with them.

How did you get the chairs in? Feels like there must be another entrance. Very cool though.

Clever video editing? When she closes the door, it looks like it cuts

    parent root

Yeah maybe it does cut but I'm pretty sure you can see the chairs before they turn around to close the door.

The thing about hidden rooms, as awesome as they are, I think I’d be terrified I’d get trapped in there

    parent
    83 points SunOnTheInside

There was a guy who was hollowing out massive secret tunnels underneath a suburban home, he got caught inside his crazy warren and burnt to death in a fire.

    This guy

    parent root
    19 points nihility101

Wonder if he is related to tunnel girl.

    https://www.realtor.com/news/unique-homes/woman-wins-approval-to-build-underground-bunker/

    parent root
    40 points HingleMcCringle_

That tunnel girl is a lot less interesting and impressive when you know about Colin Furze

    https://youtube.com/@colinfurze

He's been successfully building a tunnel network under his home in the UK for years now. It has 3 entrances, 1 in this home's kitchen, 1 in his detached workshop, and his finishing up a hydraulic lift that lowers his car from the drive way into the tunnel system. He also has the foresight to get city approval before the project, where the tunnel girl (from what I remember) kept getting hung up because she kept having to stop and get city approval for her project.

    parent root
    4 points jamalstevens

Dang that’s crazy. I don’t understand why he was charged with anything though. Unless he started the fire…. Weird situation all around.

    parent root
    33 points TraditionalBadger922

He created the situation for the fire. The tunnels were illegal. The electrical setup was illegal. He had extension cords attached to extension cords attached to extension cords, and he kept flammable materials with little ventilation and no exit strategy. He knew he was putting this kid in danger.

    parent root
    -1 points jamalstevens

Sounds like the dude had some pretty substantial mental health issues. And the “kid” was 22 there of his own accord… not trying to make excuses but again 10 years in jail seems steep. It’s not illegal to chain extension cords together.

But yeah I can see like maybe 3rd degree murder. Not manslaughter.

    parent root
    4 points hdkaoskd

    It is illegal. https://codes.iccsafe.org/s/IFC2021P2/chapter-6-building-services-and-systems/IFC2021P2-Pt03-Ch06-Sec603.6

    parent root
    3 points jamalstevens

ICC codes are only LAW if it's been adopted by the state or municipality. I'm not arguing that it's a good idea. I'm saying that it's not against the LAW.

There are definitely laws from OSHA or the Fire Marshall about doing so in public spaces or like a restaurant, but I highly doubt there's a municipal code about extension cords.

    parent root
    1 points TraditionalBadger922

He knew enough not to do it himself…

    parent root
    83 points Discordant_Concord

That, plus you’re cooked (literally..) if there’s a fire. Big no from me.

    parent root
    17 points RaeLaw

    Exactly!!!

    parent root
    18 points ItsLikeRay-ee-ain

Talk to your local fire station. Let them know the layout of your home and where the secret room is. It might not be the perfect solution, but they'll keep note of it for if they ever have to respond to your place.

    parent root
    22 points miraculum_one

the good news is that once you tell them then you don't have a secret room any more

    parent root
    10 points ItsLikeRay-ee-ain

Well if that's the case, then nothing in this subreddit is secret any longer.

    parent root
    -12 points RaeLaw

Have you heard of those panic rooms? You have to figure out clues to get out of the room. People pay for that. Nope nope nope nope

    parent root
    43 points tramadoc

Escape rooms. Panic rooms are for people’s homes. If the home is broken into they have a safe room to get to.

    parent root
    4 points RaeLaw

That’s right, escape room. I called it the wrong thing. And apparently it triggered some folks as I’m currently at -12 with that comment haha. I’m glad you understood what I meant— escape rooms, not panic rooms

    parent root
    16 points Dounce1

That is not a panic room.

You aren’t actually trapped in the room.

    They are awesome.

    parent root
    7 points dancepantz

More like Don't Panic rooms, staff are there in case of panic. And Coldplay.

    parent root
    6 points Blecki

The exit door is literally unlocked the entire time. They run partially on the honor system.

    parent root
    1 points holistivist

Lol, you don’t literally get locked in. It’s just pretend.

    parent root
    15 points Mr_Jack_Frost_

Since I was a kid I’ve fantasized about having a hidden room(s) and it’s such an awesome concept.

That said, as I got older and thought it through more, I came to the conclusion that the only way it could really be done safely, due to the things you mentioned, is in the style of Clue or something similar, where passageways push open rather than locking shut, or needing motors to open doorways.

You’d need to rely on camouflaging rather than actual locks, or I really feel like I could never actually relax in my hidden space.

I guess you could hide analog latches/levers to make an entryway a little more secure, but anything that requires electricity to open is an immediate no from me. Like you said, I just think about a fire, or the motor dying and I can’t get a cell signal back there to have someone come rescue me. Gives me the heebiest of the jeebies.

    parent root
    8 points SuperMajesticMan

Firefighters do in fact hate hidden rooms.

    parent root

My back hurts just from seeing them go through that Alice in wonderland type entry. Also what is even the point of the last compartment with the food, do they really have to hide their snacks. And what’s up with those arm rests, they look like they have metal on them.
