This never fails to amaze me. It’s going to be a mess up here for AWHILE while everyone figures out how to leave.

  • Around 30 years ago when I first moved to SF me and the fam went down to the wharf to see the blurry fireworks on 4th of July. Talk about a rookie mistake. Took us over an hour to get back home. I've never gone by car to go see fireworks since.

funny b/c i did the same thing, i think it was 2000 4th of july. friends from out of town wanted to see the fireworks (which i normally didnt do), so i drove and parked my car in a garage at the wharf on one of the top floors.... after the fireworks it took FOREVER to circle around down the floors of the garage and out onto the street b/c there was so much gridlock, got home really really late that night.

That’s bad but I’ll give you one worse. Driving to Tahoe on a 4th of July weekend. Ride home took like 7 hours. I know. I was young and clueless…

in 1998, there was a great El Nino related storm. Shut down 101 South in a massive way b/c of flooding. I was on my way to work, but ended up stuck somewhere on the Peninsula on my way to Mt View for 5 hours before i was able to get off an exit to turn back to SF.

I can do one better: driving home from Tahoe on a three day weekend during a snowstorm. It took us 11 hours from SLT 🤮

Was that the infamous year the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper fron-tpaged a pic of the previous year's fireworks because the fog made that year's fireworks impossible to see?

Lol I don't recall it being that bad so it probably wasn't that year, but a fog-obstructed 4th could be any given year.

  • Thought from the thumbnail this was gonna be Waymo’s 😂

Nope, didn’t see any actually — these are whole ass humans purposely getting themselves stuck

    They’re definitely ass humans…

  • Meanwhile, I’m listening to the fireworks from the comfort of my bed 🎆

Same here I got to see fireworks legit in the street in front of my building it was pretty lit

Pretty sure the fireworks were in the bedroom with me last night. SO LOUD.

I don’t get it. What is the point of shooting off fireworks in the rain or fog?

I could still see a lot of fireworks from my window last night. It cleared up a bit around midnight.

It was pretty clear by the bay bridge!

  • I thought it was a bunch of waymo taxis getting stuck again, but no. Just planet of the apes

  • Suburbanites being suburbanites.

  • I don’t normally ride an electric scooter. But this looks like a perfect use for one

  • Is it due to parties?

No, people just like to jam themselves up here because they think it’s a good firework viewing location. It’s not.

  • They could have saved themselves a bunch of time and just walked 😂

  • Telegraph hill is a real world maze puzzle. There are only a couple of ways out and a bunch of dead ends. The 4th, NYE and the air show pretty much turn into 1 hour grid lock.

Up where this is specifically, Union and Montgomery, there’s literally only one way out: back the way you came. It’s weird pockets of side street dead ends up there. Unless you know what you’re doing, it’s extremely hard to navigate because you can get stuck easily.

  • This reminds me of the start of every apocalyptic movie ever when the main characters get stuck on the main road or highway

  • It’s obviously really bad and dangerous in terms of emergency vehicles but surely it’s like this for 30mins at most?

In my experience more than 30 mins but less than an hour.

Fourth of July was something else though. Whole neighborhood gridlocked for several hours before up to an hour after the fireworks.

Oh yeah the 4th, this year in particular, was absolutely insane.

  • When will people learn that using cars is dumb?

Yeah, I’m on my 8th hour walking back to Napa from San Francisco. Just 8 more hours to go. I’ll have the last laugh against these passing cars, buses, and motorcycles. Hopefully I can make it back to the city by tomorrow morning.

It is a really pretty walk though. :-)

“Bicycles offer the freedom that car ads promise”. I was just biking through Napa the other week, and I’d much rather have it that way than behind the wheel of a dinosaur fart machine. Here’s another one for you: “if you can’t get there by train, it must not be a place worth going to”.

That's fucking dumb. There are thousands of places worth going to that you can't get to by train.

  • Or you can just like walk (if you're able to).

  • HEARING fireworks GO BOOM and BOOM and MORE BOOM throughout the night when youre inside without seeing them is a whole different matter. Pity the K9s

  • Glad I am not there

  • Is it safe there?

A bunch of confused, lost drivers, half looking at their phones? Hell no it’s not safe there.

    The circlejerk is leaking again.

No. Can’t you hear all the gunshots?

  • That’s nothing compared to the traffic coming in 10-20 years.
