Anyone know why there are only (or mostly) single car n trains today?

  • The holidays cause a lot of break ups, cuffing season really doesn't start until January, but midnight 31st is coming soon

    My brother, amen

  • Single trains running due to holidays and low ridership during this time of year. It’s normal.

We took an N westbound around 4pm today and it was absolutely packed. It would’ve been nice to have had two cars.

  • I think it’s kinda cute but it’s definitely unusual

  • It's been like this for days. Pretty annoying getting through the tunnel, only standing room in the middle of the day

  • Probably projected low ridership due to the holiday? Or damage from the storm - I recall that in past years they ran some of the older trains during rainy days because the newer ones can have issues.

  • I was on a train on Thursday that was having trouble getting up the hill. I don't know what it was but maybe was spinning wheels? Because of the rain?

we haven't had a ballast post in a while

Yes, the LRV4s are notorious for struggling on hills during rainy weather; a combination of a crappy spin/slide traction control system and the lighter passenger loads that reduce adhesion are generally to blame. The older LRV4s (2001-2068) struggle more with this; hence them not being out as much during the rainy weather if at all possible.

  • Lack of electricity?

probably not, rain and smooth wheels aren’t match for when there’s liquid involved

Muni’s electrical grid isn’t fed off of neighborhood PG&E feeds generally, so the wires stay live unless there’s a bigger problem with the substation. Certain other infrastructure, like tunnel ventilation shafts, station house power, etc, is fed off of the commercial grid, but again, not the case with traction power.
