At twilight I saw multiple dogs offleash in glen canyon while a coyote was actively making rounds....even some people approaching it, letting their small kids too close and barking back at it...do not do this!!
There are signs about coyotes at every entrance and hiw to avoid them. Of course one guy's dog was offleash long enough the coyote aporoached it....screaming at his dog incoherently trying to get it away from the coyote, which luckily worked eventually. The guys dog did not seem to not even have basic recall ability, but then again the owner didnt give it basic commands and was clearly panicked.
You are endangering everyone by having your dogs offleash in natural habitats. Its dangerous to the coyote (and other wildlife), to your pet (and other pets), and to people who then come into more contact with them, including children. If dude is reading this, I hope you learned your lesson and Im glad your dog survived.
Yall are out of your minds though letting your untrained dog offleash at prime hunting time in a known coyote habitat. Please just use a leash, its not hard.

YES! And ideally keep your cats inside during the night.
I had a coyote come next to me during a late night walk probably aiming for my small dog. I live close to Glen Canyon but we were a mile away on a street. My dog was on leash but coyote almost blindsided me. Thankfully nobody was hurt.
Cats should be inside always, in the US alone cats kill literally billions of birds every year. They're an invasive species that hunts for sport.
No arguments there
When our cat is allowed outside (never at night) she wears a brightly colored cloth collar two inches wide, designed to warn birds. It's said to reduce bird kills by about 80 percent.
Not just at night. Coyotes are more active during the day than people give them credit for. I’ve seen them around my neighborhood at like noon.
It’s wild that Bernal Heights has a bunch of coyotes and dogs are allowed to be off leash
Sad (or infuriating) thing is, if the dog was attacked, the city might euthanize the coyote. 😐
I never understand why leash laws aren't enforced in the canyon.
They aren’t enforced anywhere
I’ve seen them enforced at some of the smaller parks. I’d imagine one with wild spaces, posted signs and a known coyote family would get a little more ranger attention than it does.
Yes!!! A year or so ago, I saw some guy trying to chase after his unleashed German Shepherd who was running full speed after a coyote in GGP. So dangerous for everyone!
It’s crazy how many dogs are unleashed all over SF!
Yeah I really wish people would get fined over this. It’s genuinely dangerous.
Agreed!
Leash your kids too.
Bad take
