Search r/Austin Waymo. It’s going to be a blessing and a curse. They glitch out and stop in the middle of traffic also they have been caught on cameras not stopping for children getting off buses. I must say it’s kind of cool when you see one seeing a car driving itself down the road. Unfortunately I’ve only seen them downtown I believe Uber operates the ones in Austin.
I’m interested to hear how it was, did you use it on the freeway? There’s probably plenty of upsides, I was just assuming it wouldn’t be able to do that yet. As many “automated” driving cars still require you to have a driver to take control.
That train ride costs ~$30, the Waymo would cost hundreds (and Ubers already do), and you can take the Waymo for the first and last mile if the transit options between the airport aren't to your liking
Exactly what I was thinking, although I sorta do get u/Efficient-Mec's point whenever I go to LA I usually need to go to a spot not close to an Amtrak station. Once in a while I am near a station but find that the times don't line up that well. When all the cards do line up perfectly the extra hour of travel each way by train isn't bad but it definitely does need work.
uber drivers are generally second job workers or gig workers, they are not losing a job so much as a second source of income. instead of choosing a service or company to berate i think it’s more sensible to focus our attention on the reason as to why people need that secondary income and what can we do to change that
Buddy you are being disingenuous. Doesn’t take a rocket science to know that people need a second job to survive because of corporations and the need to bump of the stock. Uber is a great second job to make some side money because you can make quick cash and cash out to pay your bills and you get to meet people. Now yall lame cowards wanna go ahead and take that money away and give it to a corporation so they can go ahead and perpetuate the situation of people needing second to third jobs to survive. Even worse is Waymo might be cool right now since they trying to capture clowns like you as a customer but give it a few years and yall will be bitching about the same issues.
Maybe those are just jobs and income that shouldn't have existed in the first place or only existed as a stop gap for technology to catch up. I don't see Uber and Lyft drivers crying for the taxi drivers they displaced and donating their income to them. Nothing in the world is free and technology doesn't stop, sad to say for you delusional self.
If you care so much donate most of your income and money to them - but the most liberal and loudest never wants to put their money where the mouth is, they feel entitled and always want others to pay for it.
I’m a driver and I stand by this statement. I hear horrible things from other pax, or just friends and family.
I guess it’s more of a “see it to believe it” thing, because thinking about driverless cars sounds so strange to me. But times are always changing, for better or worse!
From horses to cars is that automatic? From steam to electricity is that automatic? From telegraph to phone automatic? What a stupid question. Those still require workers and people that need money.
Like anything, they just gotta get over any fear they have and try it. Or hear about the safety stats if they are more into fact based discussion. They'll see how good it is and never go back. Or the world will just evolve to mostly/only robotaxis over time and they'll have no choice.
Already did 500 miles in a Tesla with FSD v13 couple months ago that I rented for a road trip.. it was awesome. zero disengagements, drove me all over town including rural backroads.
Not sure what you’re talking about, Tesla has self driving but you still need a driver. Theres been accidents even with a person to take control, because they are distracted from the road.
These things suck. I was in LA not too long ago and they are all over. They tailgate like crazy and stop without any warning in the middle of travel lanes to pick up fairs. Like imagine the worst rideshare behavior and it’s automated.
Definitely not anyone I know’s experience. They drive better than most drivers, follow traffic laws really well. Only downside is when merging, they tend to be pretty passive and can block traffic when a regular driver would just merge and get it over with.
It’s on a test program at the moment. Drivers are behind the wheel while the cars drive and learn the roads and stuff and have drivers to intervene if needed. Weird part is these are Chinese vehicles from what I heard and I thought the US was all up their ass bout Chinese vehicles yet here we are….i did Zoox in Vegas in October and it was different, but I enjoyed it. They were on limited running to certain spots but it was fun seeing people faces as we drove by them completely driverless
They’re so expensive compared to Tesla robotaxi. I know reddit will try to say it’s fine to avoid benefiting Elon musk but I’m sorry, if Tesla is literally half the cost of uber and Waymo just charges whatever uber charges then I’m going with Tesla. I’ve been in both and Tesla is much smoother and it didn’t shit the bed when the lights went out in San Francisco.
They’re signalling their intent is to get ride cost down to 30 cents per mile. Uber and Waymo are not above charging $5.00 or more per mile. Waymo screwed up big time backing an inferior tech that would get them to market faster but at a huge cost. This is like watching Palm pilots fizzle out as iPhone dropped. It’s a shame because more competition would have been good for Tesla
You actually can’t make this claim at all considering Tesla Robotaxi isn’t even a functional service in the one city it operates in lmao. Idk why you’re mentioning SF. Robotaxi hasn’t launched to the public there at all. It’s only in Austin and only operates a couple cars. They’re also all two seaters, so that’s a huge restriction.

That's cause they don't want us to know about it till it's too late to complain to the powers that be.
Maybe because it feels astroturfed.
I get that, though this seems more like a new category of transportation in SD, and not just an ad for the specific company. Idk
I’m definitely against advertising on the sub. This post just doesn’t seem like OP was paid for it
fwiw, I don't work for Waymo, Google, etc. I have ridden a Waymo in the Bay and so was curious what the progress of it here in San Diego.
I walk there frequently, since last month, I’ve been seeing about 10 of those over the course of the 60-90 minutes I am usually there for

I may try this, but I'm scared. I'm less scared of hiring an Uber or taxi driver.
I can’t imagine anyone who would want to use these on the freeway and you can’t really get anywhere in SD without the freeway.
I've used them in LA and Bay Area with no issues. They also have the positive feature of not having a driver complain about immigrants.

in Los Angeles they go on the freeway and it does just fine. I can't wait for the day until I can go from la to San Diego
Wouldn't you be better off taking the train into SD and then using a waymo or Uber for the last mile?
The train takes 3 hours to SD and neither go directly to LAX or SD Airports.

What a lame. Rather give more money to a Company than help out a human driver then be on Reddit later complaining how corporations are greedy.

Too many shit uber drivers out there ruined it for everyone

Do you still use horses instead of cars? Steam instead of electricity? The Telegraph instead of a phone?

I used it in LA it was awesome. Why wouldn’t you want to use it on a freeway?
You don't think it works on the freeway? lol
No I’m saying I don’t think people would trust it.
I trust it more than the Uber driver I had that drove 45 on the freeway and kept stopping at green lights once we got off the freeway.
Like anything, they just gotta get over any fear they have and try it. Or hear about the safety stats if they are more into fact based discussion. They'll see how good it is and never go back. Or the world will just evolve to mostly/only robotaxis over time and they'll have no choice.
You go first.
Already did 500 miles in a Tesla with FSD v13 couple months ago that I rented for a road trip.. it was awesome. zero disengagements, drove me all over town including rural backroads.
teslas drive no driver no problem on the freeway in a few places now and its great
Not sure what you’re talking about, Tesla has self driving but you still need a driver. Theres been accidents even with a person to take control, because they are distracted from the road.
And this is why I don't want them on our streets.

Like that couldn't possibly cause accidents. /s
my point isn’t that it’s 100% safe. it’s that it’s safer than most drivers.
I’ve seen these clanker vans in PUBG.
I’ve seen them Downtown and in Hillcrest. Can’t wait for Waymo! So much safer than Uber or Lyft. Pretty sure my last Lyft driver was high AF.
I think I saw the same vehicle on Friars Road this morning
Just saw the test car at Mission Bay near De Anza Cove.
It’s on a test program at the moment. Drivers are behind the wheel while the cars drive and learn the roads and stuff and have drivers to intervene if needed. Bummed it’s not the jaguars like other cities
Why? Jaguars are usually towards the bottom for reliability.
Oh idc they just look nicer than these buses
I think this was just a test vehicle as there was someone in the drivers seat
the ipace is no longer being made
they are transitioning to ioniq 5s since zeekr was banned by biden after they partnered with them
they still have some zeekrs as engineering cars though

I saw one driving downtown a few hours ago
Every morning
They just had a crisis in San Francisco during a power outage. All the Waymo’s shutdown at intersections because they didn’t know what to do.
They also had a different crisis previously when people ordered them in LA and set them on fire
the sooner uber is deleted by teslas and whoever else, the better
