Habs fan here. I'll be in Buffalo on Thursday for the Sabres-Habs game, going on a road trip from Windsor, ON
Looking for things to do in the area for the day. We'll be leaving around noon and arriving around 4 p.m.
There will be five of us in total. Is there anything you guys recommend doing in Buffalo on a Thursday night? Anything near the KeyBank Center?
I'm getting ready to cross Buffalo off my bucket list!
I guess stock up on napkins for the sad drive home after we win.
Napkins are a bit rough to wipe my tears, but duly noted
lol I'm just kidding. My fam is from Quebec.
FUUUK YAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! Also the Zoo is great!!!
Get wings and beef on weck!
I second this. Two Buffalo staples that are a must. Go Sabres!
I have had acceptable wings outside Buffalo. I have never once had an acceptable beef on weck. Just sad, embarrassing imitations.
Get a good beef on weck
When I lived in NoVA there was a Bills sports bar with Beef on Weck, kielbasa, pierogies, wings, etc. It was really good. Really the only place I have found with an acceptable version and of course the guy was from Buffalo
Bar bill is my go to, but there are plenty of other good options
Charlie the butcher right by the airport for beef on week.
Pretty much any pizzeria worth its weight will have good wings but Duffs is probably everyone’s vote and is also very close to the airport.
Canalside is pretty cool and has some fun stuff. Downtown-ish spot for great wings and a great vibe is Gabriel’s Gate.
Also down that way there’s usually good live music Thursday nights at Nietzsche’s.
Also check out the Martin House, which is a massive Frank Lloyd right house that’s pretty close to the Buffalo zoo. Not sure when and if they are open to the public but the outside is pretty cool on its own.
Tons of good local breweries if you’re into that. I recommend Big Ditch.
Have fun!
Adolfs for wings and beer
My suggestion as well. Go to Adolf's before the game. You MUST get here early though. Got there 2.5 hrs before a Saturday night game in December and it was too packed.
Edit: go right to Adolf's when you get in to town at 4. That will be perfect. You can take your time there. Then you can drive down the street, park and get in the arena early. Or hit a couple other bars on the way in to the arena. I'd stop at Labatt Brew House once you're parked at the arena.
Can’t say enough good things about Adolf’s, great food, great beer, great people.
Founding Fathers
Hofbräuhaus for German food and beer. It's a 10min walk from the arena.
Trudge down Chippewa in the snow and have a good time. Then jump in the car and have the best food of (almost) any type a city of this size has to offer (if you like pizza, this is the place- we have more than 3x as many independent pizzerias per capita as NYC- competition is INSANE). There's severe urban sprawl here (e.g. the Bills 20 miles south, but that's still "Buffalo").
I guess thats my best suggestion, eat pizza and lose to the Sabres 😝
Come party with me, I have drugs
EDIT: IF y'all do like pizza... HMU with what style you're looking for and I'll direct you
Lol. I stumbled accross an article one time about Buffalo's pizza scene and they threw out some stat that sounded ridiculous; like there's one independently owned and operated pizzeria for every 500 residents in WNY... Then I started counting places off the top of my head and came to the conclusion they might be missing a few.
They used to be good fronts to launder money for the mob; I have no idea if that's still true
They still are, but they used to be too. I don't even think LaNova's tried to keep it a secret back in the day.
Canalside is right next to arena. Not a ton to do but it's pretty along the water. There's some old navy ships which are cool. Niagara Falls is about 25 minutes north if you've never been.
Pregame food/drink spots - Southern Tier and Labbatt House are next to arena and will be busy with hockey fans. Slightly further away, Union Pub, Adolfs, and Big Ditch are all solid options
Post-game, casino is not far and you get free slot play with your game ticket. Bars open somewhat nearby include House of Charm, Founding Fathers, and Ballyhoo.
It's 2005/06 reunion night so probably will be ceremonies before the game. Should be a good atmosphere in the arena. Enjoy Buffalo and the game!
Can you still park at the casino for free? Use to do that and walk to the arena but its been a while.
If it hasn't been mentioned - Albright Knox is fantastic.
I always recommend Buffalo Naval Park, though their hours are limited to weekends this time of year.
Go to south Buffalo with cash (cash only) and get to nine eleven tavern for wings. It’s 10 minutes from the arena and top 3 in Buffalo.
They were never top 3 in buffalo. Use to easily be top 10, but that was mainly because they were nice and cheap. Not to say they aren't delicious. Basic but good. The kids that took over ruined that place with the screwed up hours, randomly being closed, and no takeout.
Eat at barbill
For the record - both Bar Bill locations are well outside of Buffalo but still worth the trek.
True, north isn’t THAT far, and it’s just so good
We have Applebees
Ambiance and decor
I’m not sure what I like better, the ambiance or the decor
No better place in Buffalo for a Habs fan than Applebee's.
Go to Bar Bill for wings (Josh Allen's favorite place), before the game maybe go ice skating at Canalside which is right next to the arena. Also check out our mall in Cheektowaga, conveniently located just off the highway. That should fill your schedule to an extent
Go to the bars on Chippewa. Lots of great food as well. Enjoy!
Anchor Bar for wings. Tour Martin House (Frank Lloyd Wright design).
Drive to the reservation and fill your tank up with cheap gas!!
Sign up for a tour of City Hall. It's free and the building is an art deco wonder.
Stock up on sponge candy
I live in Miami now but every couple of months my mother sends be a box of goodies from home. Always get a pound bag of the regular and a pound bag of the orange ones. And it may be from the same company but I always get a box of the regular orange chocolate too.
Don't get me wrong the food down here is awesome. Best tacos and ethnic food I've had. But I wholeheartedly miss all the WNY food.
Oh and she always send me some homemade pierogis. We're 100% polish
TGI Fridays
You should try the wings at room 40
How about fukin right off Cyrus
