Holy shit, memory unlocked. Roommate needed me to spot him on rent for a few days cuz he bought a pair of raw denim jeans from Need back in ‘06ish. Cost him $450 dollars I think. Instead of washing them he kept them in our apt sized refrigerator’s freezer with a tiny box of Kroger brand baking soda. Thanks for posting OP my life is so much better now lol
Or, could be like talking about frozen pizzas; “Freezer-Punks have a crust?
Or: Punks in a freezer develop a Crust/Punks put in Freezer get Crusty……
So many variations that all somehow make sense
Yeah, most of Need’s business was online. Their brick and mortar RVA shop was never how they made their money. Back in the day they had some clout as curators. Wealthy folks from bigger cities would order from them.
They also had a house brand (Stelen) that was reasonably/comparatively affordable. I still have some of their stuff I bought a decade ago.
I miss them. For all it was mostly wildly out of my price range, it was at least more interesting than another tobacco/weed shop.
Lol, this sounds like another Richmond company I worked for a little while. I didn’t know these high-end boutique type businesses were so profitable. Shit was so expensive none of the employees ever bought the stuff, even with our discount
I actually liked a lot of the items they curated for the store, but it also seemed that they were trying really hard at it, so it’s unsurprising that they chased clout clean off a cliff.
The creepy IT/soccer coach/computer teacher (2008ish) from my school went to work there as some director level person. I forget his name but I’ll never forget how creepy he was.
Shut up, people that have a constant need to virtue signal and prove how holier than thou they are so annoying. I just posted about a brief moment of nostalgia, I don’t need to be lectured about every bad thing a company/people do Good Lord.
Anytime someone mentions Need, I dunno why other than it was nearby, I instantly think of American Apparel and how they sold out to Amazon. Weird times.
I won’t pretend to understand fashion either, but an easy search confirms this PVC/leather “lunch bag clutch” did have a $290 MSRP and otherwise had its 15 minutes of fame in 2018.
I recently found out about Homme Essentials. Apparently it was started by 2 former Need Supply managers. Definitely has the same vibe and quality of stuff if you miss Need Supply like I do
I got my first Triple 5 Soul messenger bag from Need Supply as a graduation gift in the early 2000’s 🥹 and I also picked up an Etienne Aigner leather jacket at I think the Phoenix before it moved? Good times 🥰

$450 back in 2000's for a pair of blue jeans...damn my dad heart just missed a few beats.
lol I remember when forum folks were like “freeze your denim”
thankfully those days are over
The days aren’t over, I still see crust punks talk about freezing their jeans and never washing them
Crust punks have freezers?
Freezer Punks have crust?
Or, could be like talking about frozen pizzas; “Freezer-Punks have a crust? Or: Punks in a freezer develop a Crust/Punks put in Freezer get Crusty…… So many variations that all somehow make sense
God, there’s still crust punks?
I didn't get that stuff. Freezing jeans is going to remove exactly 0 filth.
Using an inflation calculator, $724, adjusted from 2006.
They went under because they expanded to Japan and made a bad/weird management decision with Totokaelo and then the pandemic hit
But the clear lunchbag IS funny

That and their ridiculously overpriced clothing
That wasn’t what did it though, because they were successful with overpriced clothing from 1996 until 2020
I actually liked a lot of the items they curated for the store, but it also seemed that they were trying really hard at it, so it’s unsurprising that they chased clout clean off a cliff.
now it’s weed supply co
They really missed out on naming it that.
Cowards.
They also had one of the early Warby Parker showrooms inside the Carytown store, which was revolutionary at the time. $90 glasses was insane and new.
In their day, Need was frequently name checked in The Wall Street Journal and national magazines.
This looks like the bag my sheets come in.

It was a cool store in a way. I only could afford the stationary and books but they had good selections.
I loved looking at the art books in back and never buying anything
The YouTube wrestling guy designed a lunch bag?
What are you trying to say, you don't think this supplied a need?!
I miss NEED and American Apperal
I’m assuming you haven’t seen the documentary.

Risky, you don’t want people seeing what lunch you got
Anytime someone mentions Need, I dunno why other than it was nearby, I instantly think of American Apparel and how they sold out to Amazon. Weird times.
similar aesthetics/vibes in ways too, esp their branding
Very, very different clothing aesthetics.
Wow, I haven’t thought about Need in forever and I have near Cary and Belmont for 15 years…. Thanks for the memories!
They missed the best opportunity with the replacement store name :/

Homme absolutely rocks and everyone there is so friendly and helpful
Loveeee Homme
Apparently I was not part of the universe where this brand was even on my radar. lol
Scrolled just to see if I was the only one. Not on my radar or apparently tax bracket.
lol truth.
If the business uses the word "curated", I run.
They had a lot of normal priced stuff too, but there was plenty of this dumb shit as well lol
Go look at what this bag resales for...
They still owe me $90

this place was cool .. carytown is a good location for a boutique like this. I miss second debut goodwill on cary as well
I loved Need Supply. I got so much inspiration from just wandering around in there.
They’ll always be “where Blues used to be” to me.
Blues? Yeah, you know—that place in the old appliance store?
Never heard of them haha
haha
haha
