We’re married! Thanks to Reddit we were able to find a wonderful person to officiate the wedding. We did it during my birthday party without telling our friends first. The surprise element went off perfectly, and the slow look of realization of everyone’s faces is a memory I’m going to laugh at forever.
Thank you to everyone who replied offering help, well-wishes, and blessings. My eyes welled up more than once reading the comments. This city rules, y’all rule, and my brand new beautiful husband rules!!!

And I feel like the shock factor of their friends had massive weight. That couple saved their friends anxiety from event planning, money getting ready for the wedding, time off work, scheduling headaches, ‘gifts’ (got to multipurpose a bday gift).
If I had a friend do that, my facial expression would’ve been in slow motion just from calculating the fact that the married couple -only- wanted our presence, truly come as you are. That’s incredibly rare nowadays.
Is it really blowing the money if a couple really wants the traditional wedding? I understand not everyone wants it, but to label a wedding “one dumb party” sure is judgmental.

FYI: in Virginia, you state delegate or state senator can also marry you. Any ex-delegate or ex senator can also.

Yes he can! It has always been the law that a standing delegate/senator can marry you. And last year the law changed so former can also. Actually I bet Joe would do a great job. Whatever you think of him-he is a fabulous orator.
And I've seen him in a tux so I know he can get fancy!

This reminds me, I have done weddings in KY, IN, and FL. I need to double check I don't need anything special for VA.
Have done (primarily biker) weddings in PA, MD and DE back in the 90’s. When I moved down here in ‘98 I looked over the VA rules and realized that the state is a lot more stringent than its neighbors. Basically, if you’ve got ministerial certification you’re expected to be operating a functioning church for the state to accept your credentials. Guess the Baptists don’t like competition.

If you cannot find anyone, become a gnomean minister! Very easy and takes less than 45 minutes. You can legally officiate weddings.
