Hey everyone, I just started learning Russian (from Franch) and so far I've managed to learn the alphabet and I can read pretty fast.

I'm learning with Duolingo and a manual. I would like to watch shows and movies to understand pronunciation and learn the rhythm of the language. I never understand how ь and ъ change the syllables, and sometimes the о sounds like а and it is very confusing :D

My friend (who started learning before me) recommended бригада, which is good but they speak too fast for me, so I watch it for fun but I don't feel like I learn much. Do you have recommendations of good shows or movies, maybe made for children, that I could watch ? Any genre works would, except heavy war or trauma masterpiecey (like или и смотри or Иваново детство) Thank you

  • I recently watched Ivan vasilyovich changes professions and it was really good

Looks funny thank you I'll watch it. Russian humour seems to work on me

  • Воронины TV show is nice&cozy, has lots of episodes and I think it gives a decent insight into everyday life.

as for ь vs ъ... I'd try and explain it as follows: have you noticed how in French, the 'k' sound is always soft, and the 't' sound is always hard? The soft, or palatalized sounds, are pronounced with the back of the tongue higher up towards the palate. You can practice by saying 'say - see' and noting how the tongue position changes for the 's' sound. In Russian, most consonants have the potential to be hard or soft. ъ makes the previous consonant hard, and ь makes it soft, and both of them add a sort of a pause in speech, e.g. семя /semia/ - семья /sem' - ya/. I hope I'm making myself clear ahahah

as for o that sounds like a, that's what happens in the syllables before the stressed one. It's a regular rule in Russian (unless we talk about regional accents). It gets cooler, but I have no idea how to explain it without any audios. e.g. 'корова' is pronounced smth like 'karOvə'
Feel free to message me if you need a russian native speaker to explain random stuff!

  • I really like the youtube channel "Jurussia Учим русский". It tells stories at a beginner level with very clear pronunciation. Some are fairy tales and some are random, made up stories. I love the songs at the end that tie everything together. They're catchy and I feel like I've learned a lot just from thinking about them throughout the day.
