Salut! i am an italian that is trying to learn romanian, and i use for this duolingo, is it good for learning it? Plus, if it's not good, do you know other appps or sites where i can do it

  • Contrary to popular opinion, my experience with Duolingo was fantastic. What I've come to realize, however, is that learning a language is not so much about the resources as it is about the dedication and determination of the learners themselves.

Regarding Duo specifically, people who just give a blanket statement of "Duolingo is bad" or "Duolingo is good" cannot be trusted due to the fact that each tree is built by its own team. The English-to-Spanish tree is built by a different team of people than those who built the English-to-Romanian tree, which is a different team than those who built the German-to-Japanese tree. To have a bad experience with one tree does not qualify you to judge the quality of a completely separate tree.

For reference, I began with Duo in January of 2020 (before the capitalist revisions and the CEO outing himself as an out of touch clown) and gilded every course in English-to-Romanian in June of 2020; I then did the reverse Romanian-to-English tree, which took another two months.

Certainly it should not be your only resource. YouTube, LLMs, Clozemaster, and even tiktok and Omegle are extremely valuable to anyone who's on a serious journey to learning a new language.

To you and to anyone else, please feel free to reach out with additional questions. I'm super happy to help however I can.

think i follow either pages on instagram that teach me romanian

Do you have access to Mondly app? This is reported to be better than Duolingo for Romanian. For speaking you could try some of the online tutor websites. Or if you feel your learning ability is swift there are online courses from A1 to B2 and probably beyond.

  • I'm going to say no, and their audio for Romanian is horrendous

  • Overall no. Duolingo is not good for learning any language. You will learn a few words and some party tricks, but the learning is not structured. Duolingo is just an engagement machine that sells the illusion of learning.

it's the only thing that i can do for now but in university i will do languages and study romanian and eastern languages

don't listen to this guy necessarily - duo was a great foundation for Spanish for me

Spanish is better in duo. I do not felt it so AI as Romanian. At that point it is already useless if pronunciation is shit

  • As a native speaker, I find Romanian Duolingo lessons kind of sloppy. If you’re interested in learning the street language as well, with shortened words and faster, more native-like expression, I don’t think Duolingo is the best choice. I advise you to try watching a lot of Romanian shows that have a nice, steady speaking pace (it will help you pick up words WAY faster than you think) and as you’re starting to learn words and expressions, ask your girlfriend to have actual conversations with you and to correct your mistakes. The best way to get used to the language and its pronunciation is to hear and speak said language. Hope this helps! :)

    Bro i don't have a gf sadly

  • i found anki far far far more effective. Duolingo is extremely frustrating - if you don't pay for it (which is my experience at least)

  • I have finished Romanian for English speakers course, the course itself is poor quality but it was solid foundation and impressive vocabulary base. Later I attended offline group classes and I felt that duo’s base. After that I managed to pass B1 certification. Sure it’s not duo alone, but I exported all possibilities in duo, all three-stars side quests, match madnes, ramp up etc etc. I was dedicated, read in Romanian a lot (mainly Reddit, but still) and trying to write comments, WhatsApp messages etc. Now I continue Italian duo course for Romanian speakers and it’s much better quality and it helps me to build new language on top of other foreign language which is proven to be better for memorizing more than one foreign language.

Overall I happy with duo I have “plus” subscription for more than three years and will continue with it.

  • Right now I'm using it and supplementing by reading articles about how grammar works and creating my own worksheets to practice things like verb conjugation and pluralization. I like it so far; however, I also have my Romanian boyfriend to check my pronunciation and grammar which helps.

  • I’ve found the Romanian courses on Duolingo helpful. I would recommend the English for Romanian speakers course as it’s a much more extensive course, if you can cope with it being a bit weird that way round.

  • No, it has awful AI audio. I use free learning words app Tobo Romanian & plan to buyMondly Romanian. There are also quite good books First Romanian Readers - with one side in Romanian and another in English. Also there is Romanian movies youtube channel with subtitles in English. I took book in Romanian + audio book in voxa app, read it using same book in English. Some easy books can be romantic ones

  • No, duolingo is really trash. Not sure what else to recommend though.

  • You can try. I tried Duolingo but the app is teaching you mechanically, you learn how to speak but you don’t know what you say and why you say it that way.

  • Having been someone who has finished the course (who isn't very good at learning languages and dyslexic, just to highlight my bias).

    NO.

i have a linguistic intelligence, and as italian i speak fluently english and spanish, and i found for now good duolingo, but maybe it would be nice if i had someone who i can practice romanian, and maybe could teach me words that i can use everyday, because i wanna go to romania for living

  • Just drink a lot of Vodka and you will be fluent in no time

ok, i would add either rakija (tell me if i write it good), but seriosly is good duolingo

Well thats the English translation/South Slavic version in Romanian we would say rachiu

  • No Duolingo is not good. No single app can teach you a language, they’re just supplementary

If you want to use an app, then the pimsleur app (not free, but not terribly expensive) to start. Then Clozemaster (free version but there is paid version as well). YouTube is also good. I am also looking for resources as a beginner, so look for suggestions as well
