Another Duolingo query... Due suggests that "Ei doresc un câine, eu doresc o pisică" means "They want a dog, I want a cat", but as far as I can see "doresc" is "desire", not "want", which is "vrea". Which is used more in this context? Also, where does "ura" (wish) stand?
„Doresc” can also mean „I wish for”. Also, it should use reflexive form: „Îmi doresc o pisică” = „I wish for a cat (for myself)”. „Doresc o pisică” could be interpreted the wrong way, as feeling lust for a cat, which is a big no-no.
Duolingo is pretty bad, seems very much AI-driven.
I would agree, Duo is pretty bad, but I haven't found anything else at the moment. It sounds like "doresc" equates to "quiero" in Spanish then, which can also express love/lust. At least in Chile.
Yes, it could mean that, but it extends to „I wish”.
„Doresc să slăbesc” = „Vreau să slăbesc” = „I wish/want to lose weight”. The first variant („Doresc”) is more emphatic, has more emotion.
Cu siguranță doresc să slăbes...
Yes, "doresc" is not the best word choice in this context. In normal conversation, you'd say "I want a cat". = "(Eu) vreau o pisica." "Doresc" here is meant to attenuate the strength of the verb, but in the context of, let's say, asking your parents for a cat, it feels a bit awkward. It's perfectly fine to use a strong verb like "vreau" with your family.
In a restaurant, you could use "Aș dori sa comand... ", meaning "I would like to order...". Or when talking on more formal occasions.
Other than that, "a dori" is indeed usually describing a more intimate action. Wanting in the romantic or sexual sense is the most common use. It's a poetic word more than a prozaic one.
I want= desidero, do not confuse with Desire=desiderio Voglio=I want Vorrei=I would like
why?
Bestiality is pretty widely frowned upon, generally on the basis that an animal is not considered capable of consenting to sex with a human.
don t project human values to animals
animals take things as they come
as long as you don t harm a being, it doesn t feel bad
i am not advocating for bestiality, i coulnd t care less, but it was amusing to read about ”wanting a cat is a big no-no”
It's illegal, and punishable by time in prison. Enough of a no-no?
wow
Thought police. 1984. Minority report.
Kind of the same way you could use to want to describe "i want you", aka "I lust after you"
doesn't ura mean hatred?
That's „ură”. :)) It's all in the diacritics.
You can use „a ura” and „a dori” when you wish something to someone else.
Îți urez un An Nou fericit. = I wish you a happy New Year.
Îți urez/doresc sucess. = I wish you success.
You can stick with „a vrea” when you mean „to want”. You can also use the conditional of „a dori” when you mean „would like to”.
Vreau o cămașă nouă. = I want a new shirt.
Am dori să comandăm. = We would like to order.
hmm thats what I get for using Google Translate to learn romanian

The translation is not incorrect (probably because the sentence is a bit nonsensical). What you typed translates to "We would or we wished them a day".
yes I know.. I had to mangle the sentence a bit to show both meanings in the same ss. Gt seems to almost always show ura as hate. Thus far only adding an object to the sentence will change it to wish. I'm guessing the object is its way of knowing wishing was involved (because there's no diacritic there), which means partial sentences come out wrong
this is where you need diacritics:
a urî = to hate
Urăsc matematica. (I hate math)
Îl urăsc pe omul ăla. (I hate that man)
a ura = to wish (someone, something)
Le-am urat o zi frumoasă (we wished them a beautiful day)
ura!!! = hooray!!!
Toată lumea strigă: ura! (everybody shouts: hooray!)
In Romanian it’s a bit unusual to say just.. “eu doresc un câine”. It sounds more natural “îmi doresc să am un câine” sau “vreau să am un câine” - the meaning is pretty much the same.
Ehhh, "să am" sună destul de nenatural, îmi pare mai normal "îmi doresc un câine"
A dori e de cele mai multe ori folosit în sensul ăsta cu un pronume clitic dativ reflexiv.
Dacă nu e reflexiv, atunci verbul se duce spre "I wish to someone"
El își dorește (sieși) o casă frumoasă. - He longs for a beautiful house.
El îți dorește (ție) o casă frumoasă. - He wishes that you have a beautiful house.
