r/religiousfruitcake is about the absurd, fringe elements of organised religion. Posts about mundane beliefs and acts of worship (praying to God, believing in God, believing in afterlife, etc), are off topic.
We arent here to bash either specific religions or religion itself, because there are plenty of rational actors who happen to be religious. So if your post is "Christians are sTOoPid", or "Religion = dUmB", you're in the wrong sub and your post will probably be removed.
Dont use the title or body of your post to soapbox personal rhetoric about religion or any other subject.

Being ex-gay, presumably. Just like being an ex-atheist.
Not to say that people can't actually come to believe in a god if they never did before, but just about every prominent "ex-atheist" is a lying sack of shit just out to make money and you can tell from the way they frame it.
Far as this guy? Well maybe he was grifting, maybe he just got caught up in it. I'm always pretty damned skeptical with anyone doing something drastic like that on social media and it's not like we haven't seen a ton of influencers and celebrities jump on the christian nationalism train lately regardless of what they actually believe.
Well, grift implies it was bullshit he monetized, so I was wondering how he cashed in. I guess it could be by making “ex-gay” content, if he was doing numbers with views on it.
If he’s out again, however, that gives me the impression he really wanted to be a true believer but in the end couldn’t deny who and what he is. That’s a tough thing to do for someone so deep down the rabbit hole.
Anyways, I’m rambling, but I just wonder if it was actually a grift or just a guy struggling with his sexual and religious identity (with a healthy helping of shaming couched in false positivity from the religious side).

If it was a grift then I imagine he was trying to get views to start with, and then hopefully get paid to come on some right wing talking head shows or podcasts, maybe write a book and have them pimp it for him.
But yeah I don't know enough about this guy to say. Truly you don't usually know enough about anyone to say, but sometimes you can make an educated guess. I may have seen a reel or two of his at some point but this isn't like girls gone bible where it's just clear as day (to me anyways) they're grifting.
And the comment you originally replied to was speculating that he didn't do it successfully. Regardless of how he might've cashed in, whatever he did wasn't enough to pay the bills
I could see it. Kind of. But there’s a fine line between personally renouncing your essential humanity for (misguided) faith-based reasons, and PROFITING off of your so-called “conversion.”
I believe every human ought to live life authentically. But you cross a line when you become a mouthpiece for that movement.
I was once like this. I came out at 17, but was still pretty indoctrinated for a couple years. I used to say things like, "I'm not like other gays" and "I still don't believe in gay marriage because it's disrespectful to Christians". 10+ years later, I am so thankful every single day that I met the right people that helped me learn to fully love and accept myself.
I am wishing the best for this guy. If he truly is deconstructing, then he has a very difficult and long road ahead of him. Deconstructing from a religion you were forced to believe your entire life can be really traumatizing. Especially when that religion teaches you to despise a core part of yourself that you can not change. But in the end it is one of the healthiest decisions you can make for yourself, and eventually life will start feeling better the more you learn to accept yourself.
In all honesty I’m actually really happy for him but I hope he gets the help he needs. Those cult members are relentless in guilt tripping him back to psychosis…
Eventually all the religious psychosis backs off again, prayers go unanswered and suffering gets worse as a result of it; only downside is how many people will go down with it.
People should practice self examination, if they are going to try and monetize themselves on social media. It's fair to understand a regular person going through difficult times, but I think when a person makes a decision to broadcast themselves, they need to be held to a higher standard.
Of course, we hope he figures out his life. But his attention seeking behaviors haven't and won't serve him well.

Guessing his grift wasn't profitable enough to keep up the charade.
What was the grift?

I used to be an atheist.
I still am, but I used to be, too
Doubt he was making much. He probably wasn’t in it for the money.
I guess he couldn’t hold on to his sponsors 🤷🏼♀️
There’s a special place in my heart for grifters who throw their own people under the bus for a few benjamins.
He claims he was manipulated, tbf major religions do use fear of hell, so I could see why he converted, out of fear.

In a post about him here on r/religiousfruitcake a few months back, I said he was "one tequila shot away from jumping out of the closet".
Well, I guess he took the shot.
You miss every shot you don't take.
An ex-ex-gay.
Jokes aside it's good that he's accepted who he is
More proof that the only people that think being gay is a choice are closeted.
I wish him all the wonderful gay sex in the world. And a happy relationship devoid of shame.

In Washington state they legalized Domestic Partners. Then businesses pushed them into legalizing gay marriages because common law debt collection.
And THAT is equality! The opportunity to for everyone to have the same misery.

Off-topic but when his eyes are supposed to blue, what are then mine? Super-blue? Bluetwo?

NGL this was confusing because I know a pub called The Griffin in a village called Dale
And of course the christians are harassing him lol, happy he's free now though, wish him well <3
Shut up, Grace
I’m so happy for him
I hope he stays single forever and anytime he tries to hook up his history gets brought up.
Admitting a mistake is a good thing. Shows growth, character.
Let the guy be happy.
Oh he can fuck all the fucking way off. So fucking trite. Influencers/vloggers/content creators need to go on a spirit quest or something.
