    • r/religiousfruitcake is about the absurd, fringe elements of organised religion. Posts about mundane beliefs and acts of worship (praying to God, believing in God, believing in afterlife, etc), are off topic.

    • We arent here to bash either specific religions or religion itself, because there are plenty of rational actors who happen to be religious. So if your post is "Christians are sTOoPid", or "Religion = dUmB", you're in the wrong sub and your post will probably be removed.

  • I’ve been angrily told here on Reddit that castes are no longer a thing in India and basically that any such claims are just ignorant hate.

That's a lie. It's very much a thing in India.

In India? It's still a big thing among Indian communities in first world countries as well.

You should see it in Silicon Valley.
I’m not even that kind of Asian and I know roughly how it works

    Yup including silicon valley

The entire system is based on caste. From jobs, medicare to social welfare schemes. The entire political landscape is built on caste. Anyone who says that there is no caste problem in india is either an IT sleeper cell( paid by govt.) or just an ignorant piece of shit.

Things are changing in metropolitan cities but things haven't changed in other parts of India in a long time.

Or a Brahmin that doesn’t want to admit to themselves that they benefit from caste privilege

Been sitting on this for a few months, there was a radio interview with a famous author or something late at night while i was grabbing something once, and she had the tone deaf audacity to say that other castes just don’t get how hard it is to have everyone look up to you or some shit (about being Brahmin). Now, I’m a white canadian, but it still made my blood boil

I remember reading about a guy who said Sweden sucked because he couldn't afford servants (underpaid slaves) like in India.

TL;DR : Reservation exists to counter historical caste oppression and unequal access to land, education, and jobs. Upper castes argue it hurts meritocracy, ignoring their long-standing social and economic privilege. The debate is really about merit vs equity in a deeply unequal society

The reason why Brahmins cry is because of reservation.

The constitution of India reserves almost 55 % of jobs in public services and seats in college to OBC, SC and ST.

In the eyes of the government, there are 4 categories of caste OC: you typical land owning castes like Brahmins, etc.. OBC: Other Backward Castes. If you don't make more than certain income, then you are eligible for this reservation if you belong to this category. You can be from this category but you will only eligible of you earn less than certain income. ST: tribes that live in forests, SC: The so called the lowest of the low according to Brahmins. Castes like dalit fall into this category. Often subjected to the most discrimination compared to other. One of my father's uncles has murdered his daughter's alleged boyfriend because he belongs to SC.

Now, back to jobs. The market doesn't care for your caste. It whoops ass irrespective of it. Now since there is a need for jobs, these Brahmins and other castes are saying that real talent won't get enough opportunities if there are reservations and calling to end reservations for lower caste. Basically asking for a meritocracy. The cutoffs for other categories are lesser than open category(OC).

They conveniently forget that only 20% of India is upper caste and own the largest share of land. Most landlords and business owners are upper caste. These privileges are almost non existent in certain castes. When you point these out, they have the audacity to talk about culture and its the Brahmins duty to study and its the duty of lower castes to be servants (search manusmriti' for more info on this)

    .

That's the only correct answer, If a person claims that india no longer has a caste system he's a radical hindu who benefits from caste

Caste I'm India is more or less like racism against all non white minorities in the us

    What subreddits do you use?

Because every one I'm in that talks about India says otherwise.

There’s a reply to my previous comment on this post (not an angry one, though) that says caste discrimination really only happens in rural communities.

In your face discrimination is gonna be rural. In urban areas it's more unspoken and manifests in things like getting passed over for promotions

Which is actually true to a certain extant, but considering that 70% of india is rural, it doesn't matter too much.

In most places it isn’t in India unless it’s about marriage. In rural/tribal communities like these yeah it still is.

Tell me you're from the privileged castes without telling me. It's absolutely a thing in urban India as well. Don't spread lies.

I’m not from India lol, but I’ve lived there many years. Explain how caste is a major factor. When I lived in Bengaluru, money was the biggest determiner. It really didn’t matter much which caste you were from.

When I lived in Bengaluru, money was the biggest determiner.

I wonder if there's a generational wealth disparity between castes which are subjugated as laborers and service workers and those which are massively overrepresented as government officials and business owners. Hmm, real headscratcher that one

Yes, it’s just like most things in the world determined by hierarchy and how you’re born. But that’s a secondary cause. The main reason is money. There are plenty of lower caste people who might be rich, and they will get treated the same as those upper castes who are also rich. The common denominator here is money. Generational wealth existing or not.

The fact is they don't get treated the same. Even IAS officers face discrimination from their privileged caste juniors and staff. Also if you're not from India why are you presenting your opinion as if you understand the vast underbelly of caste-class nexus in India.

Living in India in an obviously elite (and obviously privileged caste) circle gave you all the insight to make such a statement? The audacity!

Sure bud. I've lived in Delhi, UP, MP, Maharashtra and Odisha and every single state was plagued with blatant casteism.

When I lived in Bengaluru and some parts of AP, and visited Sikkim that wasn’t the case.

Bengaluru people just hide it better because it's the third most developed city in India and they care a lot about their reputation....

  • Rajasthan going above and beyond for women as always 🤡

  • A caste panchayat of 15 villages in Rajasthan’s Jalore district has issued an order barring women from using smartphones from next month, triggering protests.

In its recent ruling, the panchayat ordered that no women or girls from these villages will use camera phones with internet access from January 26, meaning that women are only allowed to use basic keypad phones.

According to local sources, the meeting where the decision was taken was held on Sunday in Ghazipur village in Jalore district

  • tf is a caste panchayat wtf

It’s similar to Cast Fireball… no, wait, that’s something different. It’s actually a traditional council of elders who get to govern a sub-caste what can/cannot do. Take a wild guess as to how many women are in this caste.

This article is kind of misleading. It wasn't a 'caste panchayat' that did this but a district governance body that tried to enforce this over four or five small towns in the area.

  • For people who tell me caste is not a thing

  • and the city folks (including me) have the privilage of saying caste doesnt matter anymore
