Thats just not how it works. Its harder to get a 0 than if you turn in the assignment than it is to get a 100 lol. Also, according to the university their was inconsistent grading. So, either they saw the other students papers or she has been graded differently in the past on other assignments. Or if the professor in question ever gave anyone a 0 before. But thats what the university investigation brought forward. And ultamitely they decided that their was enough from their investigation to where they can fire the professor without any legal action.

I think this is just a statement to try and save face. They announce the faculty member won't teach there anymore to address the far-right outrage and then the AFT teachers union will appeal it and have the faculty member reinstated and retroactively paid but there will be no story or statement about that.
It actually just enables the behavior because MAGA thinks they got this big win over higher education and more students will try this and now there's precedence. Every written assignment is graded arbitrarily. There are loose sets of rules to follow but two people can report the same results through different writings and receive different scores.

She wrote a grand total of 2 sentences that even tangentially related to the assignment, which was to analyze a scholarly article (I doubt she even read the article beyond the abstract) and then went on a 2 page rant about how transgenderism is bad and terrible and bullying children for gender nonconformity is a good thing actually (not kidding, she literally says that). She doesn't cite any of her claims (she's a junior in college) and she ought to know by now that citations are a requirement in academic writing.
Many courses have automatic 0 policies. Students in university are generally expected to put in a significant degree of effort into their studies. Being there is optional, and they are adults. Having been a TA myself, I often gave automatic zeroes for lab reports that failed to meet the criteria of being graded.
Usually these rules are outlined in the course syllabus, which afaik we don't have for this course. If, however, a lab report of similar quality to this paper were submitted to me, that is, without citations, presentation of data, minimal showcasing of knowledge of the lab's topic, connected reasoning, and no attempt to follow any standard professional style guide, I would not waste my time writing comments and would fail it according to the policy.

How i read it is they removed the 0 because the person correcting the work did not correct it and just assigned 0 on religious grounds.
