Holy wow - they just outdo themselves every time

  • Why'd we give up Devers?

Cancer in the club house, team mates didn't like him and neither did ownership after his selfish public outbursts.

But we should have gotten more for him

Sad to see how well the FSG propaganda machine works

You can live in your own bubble and ignore reality all you want. Players could not have cared less that Devers was gone, I wonder why?

Exactly what I was saying when fans were buying into the smear of Francona as an ineffectual, out-to-lunch pill popper 14 years ago. Good thing Bobby V was coming on board to turn it around!

Bc he’s a toxic selfish piece of shit?

We know John Henry is. We're talking about Devers.

Because he was the literal worst 3rd baseman in baseball and threw a fit when they wanted him to play somewhere else.

what a great reason to trade one of the best hitters in baseball for literally negative value and then not even resign the good third baseman you replaced him with

Yeah I get the defense was shit but we didn't sign him for that. We signed him for pure hitting, and we tossed him for almost nothing to get this dude for one year.

And shit on him out the door despite never a whisper about him for years

  • Was mad after Mookie, posted last year about no longer supporting them financially.

FSG is a piggy bank for their other sports initiatives. Can't spend the money here that you are spending in Liverpool... Vegas...

    ZERO SUPPRISE!

You are just not paying attention if you think this will change.

  • I knew it was over when Cora said "the ball is in his court". Like the Red Sox thought they were the only team that he was allowed to sign with.

  • I carry this FO's water more than I should. It's my default setting. Maybe it's because I'm a child of divorce and just want everyone to be happy. THAT BEING SAID WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS HORSESHIT HOW DO YOU LET HIIM GO TO A TEAM THAT DIDN'T EVEN NEED A 3B YOU FUCKS

  • I thought that after they traded Raffy, they werent signing Alex.

    This comes as no surprise.

The roster is set, the kids are playing.

There's not even enough kids though. That's the problem. Campbell can't play 2B so I guess it's Romy or Rafaela at 2nd?

  • I have conflicting thoughts, but I don’t understand the sentiment of “terrible contract, but the Red Sox should have done it” … like money is finite. They’ve shown us that there is an upper limit to spending, so a bad contract and decision now limits the moves we can make later. To me, it’s all about extending and maximizing the window of Roman+Crochet. If you tell me it’s 2 good years of Bregman, no title, one injured yet and 2 bad years… then hell no they shouldn’t have signed it. What I’m more worried about is this… the entire fanbase was onboard with Marte who will be older than Bregman by the end of their contracts. Look at the season Springer just had at age 37. My worry is that Bregman is only 31, he’s a plus defender and there no rule that says he can’t be good or really good for the next 4 years. Maybe at the very end he transitions to DH but still hits. If he does that, it is a very good contract.

Hey man it's just crazy people acting like the Red Sox are in a financial pinch when the team is worth $7 billion and they paid $600 million for. And when they rank 23rd in the league in payroll as a percentage of revenue.

Like they literally they're only spending 40% of their current revenue on payroll which is tied for fifth in the AL East with Tampa Bay and way below Baltimore and Toronto now. To say nothing of the Yankees who spend almost 100% of their revenue on payroll. To say nothing of the dodgers or what not who are spending way more than 100% (I don't expect the Red Sox to compete with them but I certainly expect for them to spend a higher percentage of their payroll and revenue than the Orioles or at least meet match them).

They have the six largest television market. They should generally speaking be a top five payroll team. Especially since Henry has an advantage most owners don't have which is that he's already seen his net worth grow six billion dollars it's about the team.

  • They are going to be middle of the road 3rd place team. They are not getting anyone exciting. Frustrating to watch. Dave d and the Yankees get the players they want. This organization rarely does with free agents. Gotta be something about the management that is unappealing to players

Funny enough I think the Yankees are taking the same approach as the Red Sox are and it’s driving both fanbases nuts. Both will also be fighting for second behind the Blue Jays. If either wanted to try they could probably catch the Jays.

I’m pretty sure in this instance it was the treasure chest they offered Breg more than “unappealing management”

They don’t care about winning divisions. The wild card has watered down baseball so much and Henry is more than happy to just compete for one of those spots instead and pretend we made an honest go of it.

Thankfully, the Yankees may be the only MLB team having a worse offseason than us

  • If anyone is expecting them to drop big money in free agents, they haven’t been paying attention.

They’ll sign their own guys when the opportunity presents itself to get them for a good deal, but they aren’t paying top of the market.

    They’re not getting Bo.

Exactly…I never once thought they would sign Bregman. All of the “aggressive offer” talk was a big bag of bullshit. There was a short period of time when the Sox would outspend other teams for FA’s they thought would put them in contention but those days are LONG GONE. This ownership group couldn’t care less if they win another WS title.

  • Is Bregman worth 35 million?

    It's not my money.

I get that but from a fan standpoint

Well it’s theirs and “not my money” is a fruitless argument when they clearly have internal limits. I would have said fuck it 40 mil a year 4 years let’s just get it done, but agree with it or not, their prerogative was that they weren’t gonna give a “bad” contract out no matter what. Be pissy all you want but they pretty much were vocal about that being the case.

Hard for me to get excited about John Henry not giving out a bad contract.

I get that but people thinking it’d come back to the Sox (if it even did/they got a chance to match) and They would say we’ll match / exceed some number well beyond what we think he’s worth bc of the optics of the situation / we just have to have this player set themselves up for disappointment. They hoped / assumed it’d settle at 30m a year and the cubs swooped in with a sizabley increased offer.

Devers will be making 33m when he's Bregman's age - is he worth that? You have to overpay to get the players you want, else literally no one non-replacement level isn't "worth it"

Devers is a offensive juggernaut compare to Bregman

And he's a defensive albatross compared to most players in the MLB lol

Thats Fine you paying for his bat and how it will age same how Mets gave Soto that money the bat carries long term value

You can only save so many runs

Huh? No he won’t. His aav drops to $29m the last years of the contract and there are significant deferrals on it that lower the present value of the deal.

Is Vlad worth $500m? Pretty much everyone says no. Even he probably knows he isn't.

Sometimes you pay a bit more for a guy that the team likes and the fans like and that fits the club. That was the case here IMO.

This franchise is one of the top-grossing in the league but they are playing finances like they are a small-market team. Unfortunately, people still buy the tickets and subscribe to the TV games anyway, so they have no incentive to spend more.

Was half a season of Bregman worth Devers? That's the real question.

They were moving Devers off 3rd whether it was Bregman or Arenado and I don't like the idea of letting the literal worst 3rd baseman in baseball play there as long as he wants because he'll cry if he doesn't.

And now we have neither Arenado nor Devers nor Bregman. That plan really worked out well! But at least you don't have to hear Devers cry!

Don’t worry, I’m sure Chaim will be dumping Arenado soon enough

In a vacuum? No, but he brings intangibles that a young team needs if they are going to start competing seriously. Sometimes you gotta overpay guys that you know will not be worth it at the end of the contract, but if you get a World Series in that time no one is going to question it. FSG is just cheap as fuck, that’s just our reality now

  • More like they underdo themselves every time.

That said, I definitely thought they’d get Bregman back. I actually thought their relative passivity around other FAs was because they viewed Bregman as a sure thing to come back. And maybe they did. But it’s yet another example of them outsmarting themselves.
