[Bob Nightingale] The Boston Red Sox will now turn their sights to Bo Bichette.
  • 433 points RayceIan

i’m ready to aggressively lowball bo and for him to sign with philly

    parent
    70 points Wholesome_Watermelon

The front office are such good lowballers they put people on facebook marketplace to shame lol

    parent root
    13 points thatdude52

“I’ll give you 2 grand below asking and you have to drop it off here” is how Breslow buys a project car on fb

    parent root
    5 points Ok_Figure7671

Is this still available? No he signed with the cubs

    parent root
    8 points Any_Answer_3574

Lowball offer that would’ve gotten it done 6 weeks ago if Breslow had a spine.

    parent root
  • 168 points TommyTheLizard

I would fucking hope so Bob

    parent
    19 points speganomad

It would be a pretty stupid move anyway, they needed to spend earlier and fucked themselves hard, we needed power badly and got none and bichette isn’t a big power guy and can’t defend at all.

    parent root
    13 points minimumhatred

Bregman is also not a big power guy, like the exit velocities are only going to get worse and his are already worse than Bichettes.

I also think Bo's defensive inbility is a bit overblown. He's not good, no, but he's also not going to play SS here. He could be an okay 2B or even 3B if they have the brain to put Mayer at short.

I do agree power lacking is a problem, but Bichette is about a 20 HR guy and the pickings in f/a we're slim... The only legit 30 HR guy this offseason was Alonso.

Bichette and Contreras are two 20 HR guys, Story hit 25 and Anthony should be above 20 and then you could argue about someone like Abreu who hit 20 last year. We lack one big time power bat admittedly but it's not as big as just not having enough good hitters.

    parent root
    10 points leehamc

I agree with most of your comment here but let’s not pretend that Schwarber snd Suarez aren’t legit 30+ HR guys

    parent root
    3 points minimumhatred

I forgot Schwarber was a f/a but to be fair it felt like he was always going back to the Phillies.

Suarez I guess, but I'm iffy on his projections going forward, Bichette has better hard hit rates, xSLG and better exit velos. His profile is perfect for Fenway though, but he's just too old tbh.

    parent root
    2 points Cold-Albatross3728

    And 200+ strikeouts. Wonderful.

    parent root
    2 points leehamc

I didn’t say anything about that or that those guys were worth paying. It’s just simply incorrect to say that Alonso was the only 30+ HR guy this free agency.

    parent root

You totally stole my thunder - well done!

    parent root
  • 217 points ThisGuy6266

Is anyone really falling for this?

    parent
    154 points Famous-Egg-6136

There’s absolutely no chance they are paying for Bo Bichette. Like zero.

    parent root
    33 points Qeltar_

Yeah I am not buying this either. He reportedly wants $300m. They are not going to get anywhere near that.

    parent root
    15 points CosmicOreos_

    I don't think anyone's going to give him $300M, but I'm assuming he'll top $200M

    parent root
    6 points Qeltar_

I don't think he's necessarily as good a fit here, and the way this offseason has been going, it seems likely someone else will give him more than we're offering.

    parent root
    7 points CosmicOreos_

    Most likely

Only thing I can say is the the FO has an immense amount of pressure on their shoulders, hope the fans and the media trash them into springing into action

Not every free agent is the right one and I understand wanting to avoid bad contracts, but the free agents they would pay are a rarity and will always get attention from multiple suitors

    parent root
    7 points Qeltar_

They could have easily afforded to overpay Bregman by $5m a year for a few years. I don't really get them letting him walk.

    parent root
    8 points CosmicOreos_

They likely have an internal model and they stick to it

They simply didn't want to pay Bregman $35M at age-37

    parent root
    8 points Qeltar_

Oh, I'm sure. Well, we'll see how that works out.

    parent root
    5 points CosmicOreos_

I don't think the contract is great per se, but coupled with the Devers trade and the loss of leverage in the FA/trade market, it's not good lol

    We will see what happens

    parent root
    4 points KOBE_GYN

This. Yet they still haven’t realized that you don’t win if you build your team solely off of the model.

    parent root
    2 points secularhuman77

They will offer him the same “aggressive” offer they gave to Bregman and throw their hands up when he accepts $100M more elsewhere.

    parent root
    19 points EAS1000

You know people are and they’ll be all pissed off when we don’t get him.

Anyone who still falls for FSG’s bullcrap only has themselves to blame.

    parent root
    6 points Wacky_Water_Weasel

Well yeah, they should be pissed when we don't sign him. They just shouldn't be surprised. This ownership group doesn't care.

    parent root
    2 points jeffereylebowski

Falling for what? They are going to aggressively call Bichette’s agent and offer short years, low money, and a coupon for discounted duck buck tours.

    parent root
  • 31 points zoosha2curtaincall

Two months ago this subreddit was like “as long as we get at least one of Alonso or Schwarber I’ll be happy, assuming we bring back Bregman of course.”

    parent
    12 points Infamous_Aardvark146

And now its "i didnt want bregman anyways, why are you all complaining"

    Fucking bootlickers. All of em.

    parent root
    3 points Donkletown

Sure, but if the sub knew Wilson Contreras was available he would have been the centerpiece of the offseason plan.

    parent root
  • 167 points leonard815

    This franchise is embarrassing

    parent
  • 23 points Captain_Starwind

Will we make an aggressive offer for Bichette too?

    parent
    13 points Future-Turtle

    lol no

    parent root
  • 57 points MegaSportsFan

And any leverage we had is now gone lmao

    parent
  • 29 points cm167

He’s gotta be getting 35m too at the very least if Bregman got it

    parent
    10 points Any_Answer_3574

Bichette isn’t a Boras guy. Only reason I’m slightly optimistic.

Being said, Breslow’s cowardice just tacked $10-$12MM AAV to Bichette’s min bid. Romy Gonzales is our 2026 2B.

    Breslow is a fucking idiot.

    parent root
    4 points Scranton-Strangler1

Bold of you to assume Romy will play second when we have a gold glove center fielder who can easily play serviceable 2B. Why would we NOT take our best defender out of his best position? Bres’ computer model (chatGPT) told him to do it.

    parent root
  • 50 points Pyramid_Head182

Dombrowski is going for Bo. He won’t be outbid.

    parent
    26 points Confused_Crossroad

Man, I wish we had a guy like him in charge... 🙄

    parent root
    7 points Pyramid_Head182

To be fair phillys roster is getting old as fuck and has suffered some god awful contracts

    parent root
    16 points thethirdgreenman

At least they try to win, I’d rather a FO that cares and messes up occasionally than one that doesn’t even try

    parent root
    3 points Sixchr

And people said Dombrowski did the same here, but all time has proved was that he kept the right guys and added more talent to the system while being aggressive in building the team.

The Phillies will eventually need a little bit of a reset. But that's the cost of competing for championships.

    parent root
    2 points Confused_Crossroad

Yeah, but feels like we aren't really trying now. Betting on draft picks and retreads to be more economical just sucks. Much less fun.

    parent root
    2 points Pyramid_Head182

Oh 100% if you aren’t overpaying a bit for the veteran 3B who your entire team loved what the fuck are we doing

    parent root
    4 points Drizzlybear0

Our roster is younger but much less talented overall and at least the Phillies fans get to watch top tier talent in their park

    parent root
    5 points Pyramid_Head182

Respectfully, I am not envious of watching Nick Castellanos, Taijuan Walker, and Aaron Nola, plus the aging contracts of Harper and Turner

    parent root
    9 points Drizzlybear0

You wouldn't want to watch Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber play for you team and take the Sox deep in the playoffs while having Schwarber in the MVP race?

Instead of watching the people you listed you get to watch David Hamilton and Nick Sogard. Every single team has underperforming players at least the Phillies have stars with serious talent

    parent root
  • 14 points FrostedZombie24

5 years, 5mil AAV and you can sleep in the park-

    John Henry probably

    parent
  • 12 points TheRealAlexisOhanian

    Cope. They aren't doing shit

    parent
  • 62 points ferrumvir2

I wish that our front office and fanbase would understand that sometimes you have to throw an extra 6-7 mil a year to get free agents. The difference between 28 and 35 mil a year on payroll ain’t shit.

Like oh no we can’t do shit like pay Patrick Sandoval and James Paxton to rehab from TJ anymore what a shame

    parent
    6 points thatdude52

They understand it just fine, but they refuse to actually do it. They think the rest of the world should run on their model and act surprised when it doesn’t

    parent root
  • 30 points effheck

Going to lead the league in errors again.

    parent
    15 points TheBigBangClock

Theo traded Nomar for Orlando Cabrera and Doug M. Who were two gold glove fielders at SS and 1B respectively. He was able to upgrade our pitching by drastically improving our defense without acquiring any pitching. It's crazy that Breslow is collecting pitcher after pitcher and doing absolutely nothing to improve the defense.

    parent root
    2 points MinimumNo6702

Who's paying Theo these days and for what?

    parent root
    3 points hinton2014

    He works for FSG

    parent root
    4 points MinimumNo6702

Wow and what are we paying him to do, stay silent as a mouse while we let the offseason get away from us with merely a couple of mediocre add ons as we slip down the AL East?

    parent root
    2 points DoctorFunktopus

I got confused by Doug M for a second. Thought you were talking about Doug Mirabelli. Then I realized which Doug M you were talking about and I haven’t got a clue how to spell it either.

    parent root
    16 points Specific_Luck1727

Errors? You have to have gotten a glove near the ball to get scored an error. No my friend, the Sox will allow the most grounders for single this season.

    parent
  • 52 points BackgroundEast3888

FUCK this is so embarrassing. We piss off Raffy for half a year of Breggy just to try and sign Bo Bichette? Who doesn’t even match half of those two guys production AHHHHHHH BRESLOW YOU FUCKING STIFF

    parent
    32 points cm167

Bo definitely matches Bregmans production, probably even outdoes it besides the power, but we won’t get him either don’t worry

    parent root
    4 points BackgroundEast3888

I’m not worrying, he definitely matches offensive production but defense he’s ass lmao

    parent root
    31 points maximian

Maybe we can trade for Devers, he’d be a good bat for Fenway and I think we actually drafted him

    parent root
    19 points xjester8

But who could we give up? Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks and James Tibbs III. The giants would be insane to accept that

    parent root
    12 points BackgroundEast3888

And we don’t even have James Tibbs, cause we traded him for Dustin May!

    parent root
    7 points xjester8

Surely he must still be on the roster!

    parent root
    6 points BackgroundEast3888

    May or Tibbs lmfao

    parent root
    5 points RedManMatt11

    Yes

    parent root
    2 points BackgroundEast3888

They should be! May could be our third baseman and we can put Tibbs as our number 2 guy behind Crochet

    parent root
    6 points BackgroundEast3888

International signing, but yes I agree he’d be awesome at Fenway lmao

    parent root
  • 6 points JoeyZee123

No tf we will not lol. If we’re not willing to “overpay” for a star, we’re never getting a star ever again

    parent
  • 8 points thethirdgreenman

I’m sure they will leak that they were aggressive, not sign him, and then sign a platoon guy on a 1 year deal

    parent
  • 14 points Zavehi

Bo is definitely about to bend over and take our 3/80 offer or whatever moronic offer we have on the table.

    parent
  • 14 points colderbrew_

everyone glad we didn’t sign bregman because of the cost is gonna have their head explode when they see how much we’re gonna have to pay bichette with no leverage

    parent
    9 points Drizzlybear0

They won't have to because we won't sign anyone

    parent root
  • 6 points KiloThaPastyOne

    parent root
  • 11 points Two_Eagles

    parent
  • 5 points Physical-Tailor-2545

    parent root

    🥀

    parent root
    2 points Physical-Tailor-2545

    And not signing anyone ultimately

    parent root
    3 points badsp0rk

Sox will sign someone, but it'll be like bregman last year - whoever isn't signed yet and is desperate to play will accept a low years high average pay prove it contract in spring training.

Might not be someone who even plays a position the sox need to fill.

    parent root
  • 6 points ChapterAdmirable7625

Nope. They ain’t spending a dime. Anthony gonna be traded too in a year or two.

    parent
  • 6 points nrquig

    parent

    parent
  • 9 points Bmixk55

Sign bregman and piss off Raffy just to trade him and let Bregman walk, fucking hate our front office

    parent
  • 4 points TheButterPlank

I'm sure they have a very reasonable 3 year deal with year 4/5 opt ins prepared. Fucking lol.

    parent
  • 5 points Cry-Massachusetts

FSG is aggressively anti-player. See devers trade; the ticky tacky bregman contract. They have a reputation now that may affect them as a destination for FAs.

    parent
    7 points badsp0rk

    Now?

This has been an issue since they traded away mookie.

    parent root
  • 6 points strcy

    BREAKING: yeah fucking right Bob

    parent
  • 4 points dtdroid

Our sights aren't worth shit. I better not hear that our sights are "aggressive", either.

Subtract Devers and Bregman from your lineup. Slot in Willson Contreras.

Remember when we traded Rafael Devers to free up all that money to spend on some big bats? If we land Bichette tomorrow, we're still down a massive hole from either one of the two hitters we just failed to replace entirely. Next year's team will be worse offensively than last year's team. Do any of you think that moves the needle in the postseason?

    Henry fucked us again.

    parent
  • 3 points Mundane_Asparagus_78

    parent
  • 3 points Past_Attempt_5261

    parent

Yeah at the price he reportedly wants? I fucking doubt it. Had a better player locked up for years and traded him.

    parent
  • 3 points SaveHogwarts

Honestly, I COULD see them overspending on him because of his age and the fact that they’re starting to really get backed into a corner.

They’ll rationalize the back half of the contract being age 31-34 vs 34-37.

    It won’t happen.

    parent

The Red Sox are not signing anyone. Henry wants a salary cap. The current CBA ends this year. It seems like the owners will be pushing for a cap with the next CBA. They’ll most likely be a strike next season because the players don’t want it.

    parent

Breslow is just a scapegoat for our cheap, complacent, and incompetent ownership

  • 2 points ApprehensiveSpend743

Our offer will be 70+ million dollars below whatever he signs for

Wish fanduel gave odds for this cuz id bet all my money on it

Yeah sure they will. If they were serious they would have signed him or any of the free agents. Just a another bunch of crap from this cheap organization that still gets fans to show up

John Henry must have put a mandate out to not spend any money in FA unless it's a 25% discount on player value

LOL Dombrowski vs Breslow........We know who the fucking stiff is here

Just stop it there is 0 chance they pay for Bichette. Piece of shit ownership that’s happy to just collect their money and finish 3rd or 4th in the division.

  • 2 points padrejohnmisery

And we won’t sign him either.

Cool. Excited for the teams offer to finish anywhere from 3-5 with him

I’ll make sure to not get my hopes up because I know there’s no way they’re going to sign a top tier free agent who’s seeking big $$$ and years.

    And then not sign him…

  • 2 points cape_runner

Oh, they’ll look at him, alright. Walking away

He’ll end up in Philly by Wednesday after Henry makes an “aggressive” offer

I don’t think this was the best free agent class to fit their needs. I know I’m in the minority but I don’t love Alonso. I did want bregman back but now I don’t want them to go overpay for Bo just so they can say they got someone. Who knows what will happen 3 months into the season. Maybe someone will become available. What am I missing?

We will mess that up too….

In my heart of hearts I just knew they’d miss out on both Bregman and Bichette and would have to settle for plan C or D.

I’d love to see them prove me wrong on Bichette but I’m not counting on it.

I've been pretty critical of Bichette - mainly because I thought Bregman was a better player, but they absolutely have to get a deal done here. If the Boston Redsox go an entire offseason in what is supposed to be a championship window without signing a FA, it's time to riot.

At this point, just have Mayer play 3rd, Ceddanne 2nd, Duran center. Then trade/sign for someone at the deadline.

Bichette doesn’t move the meter much more than what ^ would produce IMO.
