The “full throttle” thing is deeply annoying for two reasons:
I actually don’t hate the Sox deciding to do a post-2021 retool and start over with a younger and better core. I hate many of the decisions that led them to that being necessary, but I don’t hate the decision to do it. What I do mind is a refusal to even remotely acknowledge that, and saying that the team is committing to spending on a competitive playoff roster. Dude, I’m no MLB scout, but I do have eyes.
Anthony is now a regular member of the lineup and the Sox are entering the 2026 season coming off of a WC loss to our rival. The young core is here. The window is open. The time to improve the roster is absolutely now.
How can you trust the young core to be able to do anything over a 162 game season. Mayer has been injured multiple times. Anthony a 20 year old kid is coming off playing a third of a season and hurting his back swinging a bat as a 20 year old. We have no actual idea about tolle or early. If your .250 hitters in rafaela and abreau make you excited idk what to tell you. The red sox are one of the richest franchises in all of sports let alone baseball. Spending money should never be an issue for this team. They should never be in a position where you have to rely on a lot of young guys to get it done.

Seems like Boras and/or Bregman isn’t too impressed with this “aggressive offer” if they lose out on Bregman Bichette is going to be very expensive and I think there’s a real chance they won’t have any other options. I also wonder if Bregman already signed and they are going to make a big splash at Fenway Fest this weekend when he walks out in a Sox uniform and everyone goes nuts. If that doesn’t happen on Saturday I’m definitely concerned.
Boras tactic is typically to just keep needling teams until the last minute. He thinks that if he waits until the last minute, someone will break and offer slightly more just to get it done. What the red Sox are doing is the correct tactic with a non superstar boras client. (Excluding someone like Soto or Ohtani or somebody like that)
To be fair Boris usually gets his clients bundles of money so it works. And it seems easy to leverage the Sox position right now, knowing they have a ton of money and have clear needs on the team that Boris clients can fill

I think honestly this is proving to be a weird offseason in general and I don’t know how much of that you can put on the Sox.
Bregman hasn’t signed, Bichette hasn’t signed, Tucker hasn’t signed, Bellinger hasn’t signed, Framber hasn’t signed, neither Suarez has signed.
Things seem to just be moving slower this year with the lockout looming. Plus, our main target seems to be Bregman, who took his sweet time signing for us last year too. I think he’s content waiting it out.
As long as we sign one “big” free agent, alongside acquiring Contreras/Gray, I think all of us will have forgotten about being mad at ownership for not spending by the time the season starts.

Wilson Contreras has had virtually the same OPS+ as Alonso over the last 3 years and is significantly better than anything the Red Sox rolled out at 1B last year (The Sox are no longer relying on Casas and anything he does forward is a plus).

Some players who had great years last year like Crochet or Chapman could take a step back, but many of the players on this team are also young and on upward trends where they could have significantly better years this year than last as well.

They extended Anthony and spent 47 million on adding gray and Wilson. So in terms of this year’s payroll they’ve added 63 million onto the payroll with just those three contracts for 2026. They are sitting 9 million or so below the first cbt which if they add bregman they will far exceed.

I don’t really disagree with you, but you can’t add Gray and Contreras money without also subtracting Giolito, Bregman, Refsnyder, etc. Gray and Giolito are a one for one swap. A swap I like, although it did cost prospects as well. But point being, at this point they’re spending less than last year, and hoping against hope that no other team steps up to sign Bregman like last year. Maybe it works, but if it doesn’t then they ran off their best hitter on a one year gamble in which they kept their new franchise player in AAA for too long.

I guess their spending depends on how you look at it, whether total money contracts or in cbt. They are well above cbt levels in 2026 compared to 2025. Total contract money is about the same. If/when bregman resigns then they will exceed both and they still have bullpen help to add.

Nah the offense is definitely improved over last year if Bregman comes back. Contreras is an upgrade at first and a full year of Roman. That’s a lineup with quite a few players who can go for 20-30 HR.
Bregman, Roman, Contreras, Story Wilyer all have some pop and could hit 30 if the dice fall right. (Obviously not going to happen for most) Sure it doesn’t have a huge bopper but it should definitely be improved from last year. This is assuming health obviously, which is its own risk.

There's still time and it's clear they're waiting on Bregman for the other dominoes to fall. I'll judge when the offseason is done. I like the moves so far, but I expect at least an infield bat (Bregman or whoever), maybe another bat or SP. If they don't score any of those this is going to be a deeply disappointing offseason.

There are a lot of free agents remaining. The Sox have reportedly made a big offer to Bergman, but are stuck in a holding pattern waiting to see if they land him. Also, they've spent money signing Anthony to a long extension, and bringing Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras on board. There will be more to come.

There's clearly a stalemate with the FAs and teams are waiting for the next shoe to drop. I hate to say it but I believe they're going to make a big money push for at least 1 of the 2. If you said last year we'd have Bregman for 7 years instead of devers for 10 for similar AAV, it'd be an interesting choice. In hindsight I would pick Bregman tho. Should age well and has defense and leadership the team needs.

They got bullied in to extending Devers when they didn’t want to. They used a situation they created with the position change to make it palatable to trade him.
Henry already has 4 rings. He cares way more about the Champions League, a Stanley Cup and making numbers on financial statements get bigger.
I thought things had gone alright this offseason but this really puts it into perspective. We are not serious about competing for a championship in the next 2-4 years. Ownership has set the mandate : sneaking into the playoffs as a wild card and hoping you can make a miracle run after that is the goal.
While I get the point you’re trying to make, and the fact that they haven’t spent any money on FAs for depth and bullpen is a little strange.
They have still: - Extended Garrett Crochet - Extended Roman Anthony - Traded for Sonny Gray, who’s is slated to make a shitton of money - Traded for Willson Contreras who isn’t expensive, but also isn’t cheap - Reportedly have an “aggressive” offer out to Bregman
Signing free agents isn’t the only way to make a team better. It’s annoying seeing Imai and Murakami go for such small deals, but there were no leaks and their rumored going rate was significantly higher. I’d have loved to have been in on either of them, but their deals also show a supreme lack of confidence in their abilities.
The additions through trade, we still take in their contract. The extensions. We’re not spinning our wheels in mud or even going backwards just because we’re not signing free agents.
Being completely honest, besides Schwarber, Alonso, Bregman, and Bichette, there weren’t any free agents I really cared about pursuing (Imai on the deal he got, too, for sure, but not at what was expected). Schwarber was a long shot, I don’t think anyone expected him to leave Philadelphia; Alonso sucks, especially going to Baltimore, but I’m happy with Contreras; and we’re reportedly in on Bregman and Bichette.
