It can’t hurt to have an insurance policy and/or a lefty/righty tandem.
First base should be a position of offensive productivity, and we can’t roll the dice with someone who looked really uncomfortable at the plate until he blew out his knee.
I also think this is why they picked up Contreras… This isn’t a long-term solution. This is an insurance policy. I still believe they think that Casas is going to be their first baseman of the future.
I see Contreras in the DH mix, as well as 1B. Let's not assume that Casas is out of the picture with this deal.
But yeah, I know what you mean about the parent commenter just dissing Casas like that. I hope the MFer pops off 40 bombs just to shut these people up.

Writing a citizens bill to change the 7th inning song to Cracklin Rose. It’s genuinely a better and more fitting song, it’s an absolute banger, and I don’t care what my therapist says I think legislation is the perfect vehicle. Would appreciate the support.
I’m extremely disappointed with trading Dick Fitts solely for the name. I liked him and Dobbins, but I do think they kept the better starters in Early, Harrison and Tolle.
Real. But I mean Jeffrey Springs stung in 2022. They're 26 y/o with starting experience. One might become a stud. Still think it's a good trade but we might get butthurt in the next year or two.
And that’s not even to mention David Sandlin or the freshly acquired Jake Bennett, whom the guys at Sox Prospects believe could be an emergency starter option in 2026 to supplement the rest of our depth.
Yeah just saw that go by. Minor league arms it said. Curious who they will be but Dobby as the headline is very easy to stomach for a Contreras swap. Im wondering if they still stay in the Marte market after this.
Thats kinda where I was at it in mind too. Tolle will probably start in AAA but be on the roster due to injuries or fatigue at some point and ahead of him you have Gray, Crochette, Bello, Kutter, Oviedo, and Early most likely so moving one of them really impacts depth now.
It won’t fetch Marte, but I could still Harrison being moved since the FO seems low on him. Otherwise if a pitcher is going out then I’d expect a true #2 to be coming back
He has options. Could spend all year in AAA healing and getting ABs. If the Sox need him at the big leagues, he’ll get called up. If he is playing well and a trade opportunity comes up, then he can solve that. If he struggles, he’s in AAA.
Huh, I didn't realize he still had options. Either way, I really do want him to do well, because he's a properly talented dude and such a frigging unique person.
I really like Dobbins and Fitts but if you can add a SP, and RHH without losing Early and Tolle that would be huge. Just pay Bregman at this point and they’re on really good shape.
Okay okay! We did something!! Have to think the Craig - Cardinals pipeline is a serious well we keep going to. Happy with this, especially given the fact Dobbins was the headliner going back
i honestly really like it. not some crazy blockbuster player that a lot of people wanted and isn't a one-man fix for the batting issues, but fills a need very well imo. still would love a big bat and i feel like the sox might end up looking at someone like okamoto at this point (if it happens at all).
Just went to Bsavant, his bat speed is still good and he's decent in the field. Financial cost reasonable. He's obviously an awful catcher but as an emergency option I think it's a nice insurance policy.
Move just made too much sense not to happen. Contreras allows you to let Casas take his time in AAA and gives you the option to either rotate DH and LF between Anthony and Duran or trade Duran and platform Yoshida at DH. Who knows maybe Masa gets hot at the outset of the season and an offense needy team is willing to take on his remaining contract in June/July. By then the hope would be Casas or Campbell is ready to be the Red Sox DH. Appears All their very best young talent is staying put, now go re-sign Bregman and they’ll be in an extremely enviable spot.
Can you elaborate? Obviously we have a huge need for a right-handed power bat, and I see his defense is surprisingly pretty good at first. Anything else I'm missing?
Overpriced stopgap that turns 34 in May. Terrible deal. The people applauding this move are the same ones who thought Jordan Montgomery was the next Cy Young.
I wonder what Contreras was promised to wave his no trade clause? What happens with Yoshida if Casas gets DH time? I like it, 1st was such a huge whole last year.
Remember when the Red Sox said they were going to come out swinging in Free Agency.. is this what their plan was or are they giving the same effort as the trade deadline?
Like others have said, kinda nervous about who they gave up, but they probably kinda had to deal someone in order to fix the years long problem at first. I like it!
I wonder if they were able to flip Casas here or if they might put him at DH and move Anthony to the field.
Edit: Now that I’ve seen the players it’s close to a steal. Great move by Bres.
Edit 2: How could anyone not possibly like this move? I’ve been the first to shit on Breslow, but tonight’s not a night to do it. He fixed first and gave up no one of significance. And if Dobbins turns into something, he’s in the NL. And Casas now has all the time in the world to recover, eventually DH, and then maybe play a game a two per week at first.
Nice move! Now just one other player either at 3rd or a 2nd baseman. I don't think Bregman is coming back so go for Bichette for 2nd base and put Mayer at 3rd. Or do something else via trade or FA and use Mayer as utility to back up 3rd, SS, 2nd and DH
Has casas I had a year where he played more than a quarter of the season I swear every year he gets a crippling injury and knocks him out for the year.
Ugh. Dude is 33 and has WAR that has gone down at least 10% for like 5 straight years. If that trend continues he’ll be close to under 2.0 WAR next season. Not excited.
of all the free agents that have been signed this offseason who do you think they should have signed? Because you cant be mad they didnt sign guys who no one has signed yet.

Is that Walton Goggins lmao
This is Baby Billy's Bible bonkers
The best bits on that show were when the other Gemstones would call him “Uncle Baby”.
Killed me 100% of the time.
OP is misbehaving
My #1
That’s Cooper Howard
Jesus I love Uncle baby Billy
Can someone explain?
No explanation needed
Thanks
My first thought too …

Man eats his fiber 👌
You know what, I don’t care what the terms or years are. We finally decided to get an MLB first basemen
It’s 2/36.5 left on his contract with a 17.5mm club option for 2028
17.5 millimeters?
I mean, he's a catcher that tried out first and wasn't bad at it...
I thought he was a catcher!

I hear ya…
But…
It can’t hurt to have an insurance policy and/or a lefty/righty tandem.

I also think this is why they picked up Contreras… This isn’t a long-term solution. This is an insurance policy. I still believe they think that Casas is going to be their first baseman of the future.
Ya an insurance policy who can also give ya catcher reps if needed, i dont hate it
I see Contreras in the DH mix, as well as 1B. Let's not assume that Casas is out of the picture with this deal.
But yeah, I know what you mean about the parent commenter just dissing Casas like that. I hope the MFer pops off 40 bombs just to shut these people up.
Literally did not say a word about the man lmao
Yeah, everyone would love to see Casas pop off, but managing your team like he’s definitely gonna pop off is ridiculous.
That's the point.
I think this more so spells the end of the masa yoshida era in Boston than it does Casas

They are haters and don’t understand baseball. Casas is our daddy.
I just loudly announced this trade in the bathroom at TD garden, at least 1-2 dudes were into it
Good data. Did you also check what the ladies room thinks?
It’s a bruins game so there was a lack of data to be had. /s jk.
The Ladies Room on Jamn 94.5 is where i get all my in depth baseball analysis. Pebbles ability to explain sabermetrics in laymans terms is uncanny. #yasqueeen
As long as Fenway’s still playing Sweet Caroline
Writing a citizens bill to change the 7th inning song to Cracklin Rose. It’s genuinely a better and more fitting song, it’s an absolute banger, and I don’t care what my therapist says I think legislation is the perfect vehicle. Would appreciate the support.
I have no faith any level of government will do the right thing and pass this bill.
Thats why this bill is called “An Act relative to A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE”
I’ll sign your petition if you change it to a song we play in any other inning
If im bein honest id take 8th
Broken by Passan AND signed off on by the TD Garden men’s room? Sounds like it’s a done deal then.
Unfortunately, we need distracting from the bruins game…
Were they well hung?
Ooof. Just checked the score… better hope the pats win.
That’s the plot of the next Heated Rivalry episode.
I want to see who the Red Sox are sending to STL.
Dobbins
Dobbins is the headliner
First fitts and now dobbins? Craig we are outfield heavy not starter
Imagine being pressed about trading Dick Fitts and Hunter Dobbins.
I just am a little bummed I won't get to giggle like a 10 year old as often when I hear the name dick fitts.
I’m extremely disappointed with trading Dick Fitts solely for the name. I liked him and Dobbins, but I do think they kept the better starters in Early, Harrison and Tolle.
Your Dick Fitts take is one I agree with.
Real. But I mean Jeffrey Springs stung in 2022. They're 26 y/o with starting experience. One might become a stud. Still think it's a good trade but we might get butthurt in the next year or two.
Tolle and Early are clearly the youngsters they want to hold onto
Butthurt by Dick Fitts!? Him becoming a stud would be hard to take and harder to swallow. Try to out-innuendo those two sentences.
We are starter heavy
Crochet/Gray/Bello/ new pirates guy whose name I can’t spell yet / Sandoval / Kutter /Harrison / Early / Tolle
Oviedo.
Same as the character on the new show Pluribus.
Honestly how I remember.
And that’s not even to mention David Sandlin or the freshly acquired Jake Bennett, whom the guys at Sox Prospects believe could be an emergency starter option in 2026 to supplement the rest of our depth.
Org is way way more starter heavy (especially backend guys) than OF heavy.
Bro what? We are incredibly starter heavy
Tolle and Early?
We have way too many starters
Are you being sarcastic? We had 14 SPs on the 40-man (plus Houck) before this.
Dobbins excited to headline anything.
Other than the New York Post
Dobbins is the headliner plus other minor league arms according to Passan
Dobbins, Fajardo and Aita
Damn it. I liked Dobbins. I'd rather see Kutter Crawford go.
Oh, well.
For next year I’d expect more from Crawford
Dobbins, Fajardo, and Aita. Aita is the one to watch.
Love Dobbins but this is a big upgrade at first base for not a huge cost.
Breslow W.
Hell yea I hope they just do mini piece by piece trades with stl forever
Donovan next? then jojo
Oh man could we use Romero. Even if its at the deadline with five other teams in the running.

Lol
These mock trade headlines are out of control
There was one I saw that we had signed Breggy, I clicked it, and the headline was "...and other headlines we'd love to see"
Solid contact rate, decent defense, consistent right handed bat. Checks a lot of boxes!
Feels like the Bregman bat replacement
Can stay on the field for more than 20 games per season…….
No, you're thinking of Casas, not Contreras.
[deleted]
And? We have Triston Casas. He is a right now acquisition, we don't need him in 3 years.
Are you talking about Casas like he’s some prospect?
I cant wait to see what we sent. Makes me a bit nervous, but I really like the fit. Definitely happy with the improvement.
Dobbins, minor leaguers.
Yeah just saw that go by. Minor league arms it said. Curious who they will be but Dobby as the headline is very easy to stomach for a Contreras swap. Im wondering if they still stay in the Marte market after this.
FWIW, Merloni speculates no because Early or Tolle would have to be included and the starter depth is lessened with the Gray and Contreras trade.
Otherwise if a pitcher is going out then I’d expect a true #2 to be coming back
Now do Bregman
but i love Dobbins....we gave him sox
Good start, go get Ketel now
doubt they will go after marte, most mlb writers say they're out of discussions
Who’d we give up!!!
Dobbins
Ok. I don't hate it.
The St. Louis Cardinals. The new Boston developmental team.
LFG. We finally got a right handed bat to add to this lineup. Now please go and get Alex Bregman.
I’ll take it!
‘hunter dobbins the headliner’
Is Bloom a double agent or something?
I love this move
Getting majority of the contract paid and only really giving up Dobbins is massive. If we get Bregman back this was a win
Love this!!!
So I wonder if this means Casas is on the move?
Nothing happens to/for Casas until he shows he can take the field.
But he takes so many reps in his mind! That kind of clubhouse inception technique has to be worth at least three prospects.
Not sure what the return for him would even look like at this point. I like him, but he seems like a very polarizing trade piece.
Would be stupid to move him for a guy who’ll be 34 next year when they could just split reps.
Definitely not. This just means Casas lost playing time.
If Casas is healthy and performs, great! We’ve got a nice R/L platoon and can split Casas at DH.
If Casas takes awhile to heal or comes back and sucks ass, we’ve got a quality MLB player at 1B.
If he sucks, his MLB days are likely limited as he’s the next Bobby Dalbec.
Probably not. Contreras is going to be in the DH mix as much as the 1B mix.
Finally!
That’s a start. Let’s keep it rolling.
I really like Dobbins and Fitts but if you can add a SP, and RHH without losing Early and Tolle that would be huge. Just pay Bregman at this point and they’re on really good shape.
Top 5 defensively last year at 1B and will love smashing at Fenway. I’m here for it!
It’s like Chaim never left.
I’m not familiar with this guy but I’m just glad we don’t have to carry Casas into another season now
Hell yea let’s go
Dobbins is the real loss. Dang I hope Contreras can make us forget the stuff.
Thought it was Arenado at first lol
No, Hu's on first
No but it may be Arenado at 3rd the way we deal with Cards ...
My sweet boy dobbins :( </3 🥀🥀
Here we go.
how is he defensively....as a 1st baseman and catcher?
He was 4th on OAA in the whole league so it seems he adapted well to first.
His catching days are behind him
Okay okay! We did something!! Have to think the Craig - Cardinals pipeline is a serious well we keep going to. Happy with this, especially given the fact Dobbins was the headliner going back
Thrilled abt this
Im in, lets see the trade
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YESSSSS!!!!!
soooooo exciting.yay woo
i honestly really like it. not some crazy blockbuster player that a lot of people wanted and isn't a one-man fix for the batting issues, but fills a need very well imo. still would love a big bat and i feel like the sox might end up looking at someone like okamoto at this point (if it happens at all).

Not bad, Bres.
Red Sox are cheap! Contreras is injury prone and doesn’t hit for high average or more than 24 jacks, neat acquisition.
HUGE fan of this move, Contreras solves so many issues for us
Can you elaborate? Obviously we have a huge need for a right-handed power bat, and I see his defense is surprisingly pretty good at first. Anything else I'm missing?
[deleted]
Hunter dobbins going the other way. Not a bad deal at all
Good move. Who are we giving up?
Mainly Dobbins and some minor league pieces
Good deal. I hate to lose Dobbins but great return
the stiff actually got us a 1B!
I like it
I like this. Means we still have some $$$ for another free agent. Let’s do this!
Overpriced stopgap that turns 34 in May. Terrible deal. The people applauding this move are the same ones who thought Jordan Montgomery was the next Cy Young.
agree 100%
I know he's hurt, but anyone wonder what happens next with Casas?
He works his way back to health and he gets in the lineup if he’s hitting like his career numbers.
I wonder what Contreras was promised to wave his no trade clause? What happens with Yoshida if Casas gets DH time? I like it, 1st was such a huge whole last year.
Willson rocks, treat him well. Incredibly likable guy, really good bat, surprisingly solid at 1B
Remember when the Red Sox said they were going to come out swinging in Free Agency.. is this what their plan was or are they giving the same effort as the trade deadline?
Terms are terms finally got a 1st baseman. Also can catch and play outfield.
Kelsey Grammer
That was not a first down man. What the fuck is the point of replay?
Jeez Marcus must be confident as hell with his hands to be making these tight catches.
You can unpin this….
Like others have said, kinda nervous about who they gave up, but they probably kinda had to deal someone in order to fix the years long problem at first. I like it!

Anthony should not be DHing at all.
No he shouldn’t.
Kinda down on this trade, Hunter had some grit, go pay for a player instead
I like the idea of bringing him in!
Contreras to start at 1st vs the lefties. Cassis, if he makes the team, will start vs the righties. Cora loves to platoon players.
That contract is a bit rich for a guy with a projected 2.0 fWAR. Not to mention giving up a lot of the pitching depth.
Ugh. Dude is 33 and has WAR that has gone down at least 10% for like 5 straight years. If that trend continues he’ll be close to under 2.0 WAR next season. Not excited.
Chaim literally just getting all his picks back. Pitching is not as easy to come by. They should’ve spent money
Still haven't signed a free agent btw
Apply for a job at 98.5
It's a valid criticism that we haven't spent any money yet on free agents
Buddy relax it's not just about spending money let them keep cooking like this lol
It's a pretty pointless criticism when we're filling all our needs with trades.
of all the free agents that have been signed this offseason who do you think they should have signed? Because you cant be mad they didnt sign guys who no one has signed yet.
Schwarber.
I’m not sure he was ever going anywhere but staying in Philly.
I mean they had nothing at 1B so I'm glad they have someone but he's not that good. I'd rather have Dobbins and Rhys Hoskins.
Hoskins is only a year younger than Contreras, and isn't the hitter or fielder that Contreras is.
We can live without Hunter Dobbins. Blake Aita could be a good one, but Dobbins isn't a big price to pay.
[deleted]
he already got two starting pitchers
lol why
i'd rather have okamoto
He’s no Pedro Alonso, but it minimum this should solve our revolving at door at first base that we’ve had forever
