I go to this pretty popular gym in my city and i havent noticed anyone new there even though the new year has come. It's the same unacknowledged faces ive been seeing for years/months. What gives? Did everyone just give up

  • Everyone has given up 😍😍😍

for lent this year I'm giving up

  • I wish. Multiple times this week I’ve had to leave my gym without a complete workout because I was on a time crunch and equipment wasn’t available.

Gotta get bigger so you can intimidate them off the equipment you want to use.

Of course it's difficult to get bigger when you can't get on the equipment you need.

I’m pretty big I’m just polite.

Fucking onlyfans looking hoes taking over the smith machine for a 24 set squat workout

i got lucky and my gym has eight power racks and no machines other than a leg extension, hack squat, leg press, and one of those big double column cable/row machines

all the cardio bunnies are in a whole different room and you never have to wait on a rack even at peak times

I honestly feel bad for those types. They could probably do 2x3-6 heavy squats three times a week and get at least 60% of their lower body gains, and it would take only a fraction of the effort required for their 4x a week, 50set junk workouts, but they never will because female lifting content is a post-nuclear wasteland

Gymshark butt lifting leggings and its consequences have been a disaster for the gymcel race

  • Ozempic?

It is ozempic. Local gym membership has been on a decline throughout 2025

It’s actually extremely important to weight lift if you’re on Ozempic. You’re very likely to lose muscle.

I honestly think it’s because I haven’t seen very good deals for gym memberships this New Year’s. Like nothing has been advertised. I normally just run or weight lift at home. A lot of people already have gym memberships too. Or they realize they were never gonna use the gym membership.

    Muscle doesn’t matter for women

Yes it does lol. Everyone looks better and feels better when they lift. I’d argue that weight lifting is even more important for women due to the risk of osteoporosis

No one goes to the gym to prevent “osteoprosis” you autist, they go to look good. And muscles don’t make women look good

People go to the gym to look and feel better. Lots of people go to the gym to be healthier. women absolutely look better with some muscle rather than stick thin. Women don’t get insanely muscular unless they are on steroids. A woman can’t bench press herself into Arnold Schwarzenegger

  • Even the planet fitness I go to is the same. I was expecting it to be packed for at least a week. Fine by me, everybody deciding to rot when I decide not to can only be good for me.

  • Recession indicator, no one has the money

    It’s $20 a month bro

    But my weed money bro

  • It doesn't help that average gym around me in 2021 was 30 a month and now its 50

The fact that you pay attention to tiny amounts of money like that is really sad. I hope you pull through this

Hopfield you literally posted 4 months ago in MPMD about saving money on the gym by buying dumbells you regard

  • I’ve definitely seen the post new year uptick. It’s just you.

  • Just canceled my membership; had to stand in line behind another guy doing the same.

  • What time are you going? I think resolutioners tend to default to going after work, so if you're already avoiding those times you may not see them.

Somewhere between 8am and 3pm, depending on when i can on any given day. In the past i saw an uptick in new faces whenever i went, but not this year for some reason

  • Mines more crowded, maybe not as nightmarish as last year though

  • I think a small reason might also be that the flu season is notably bad this year and some people might be avoiding the gym because of it. I’m no hypochondriac but I’ve been working out in my small home gym the last few weeks instead of going over to my usual place.

  • All of the new gym members are skinny guys.

Increasingly, fat people have convinced themselves they’re strong and that their size makes them better athletes and fighters.

Obviously that’s not everyone, but tons of guys who would have been in the gym 5+ years ago are happy living under the guise that they’re 20 pounds away from being a monster, and that all fat guys are secretly yoked.

I’m 6’1” 195 pounds with abs, and I hear from dudes all the time who think they’re just going to cut down some and be 200+ pounds lean.

  • No one cares about getting fit when you can just get prescribed skinny shots

  • Zwift Island has doubled in population this week so maybe they're all just staying home

  • on the contrary I've seen a lot of shlubby radlibs at the gym. if any of them are there next December I will take a shit on the gym floor and film it.

I go to a university gym, and I've definitely noticed an uptick in those types over the past week.

Probably won't see them by February though.

Our next mini-surge happens in April, when more scrawny undergrads start showing up and doing 3×27 full-body-lurch bicep curls in the hope of having guns by early June.

That's right, Aiden. Really put your back into it. This bicep isolation exercise.

  • New gym crowd hasn’t really been a thing for years but I go a expensive gym in yuppieville

  • I go at 7am so it's usually pretty empty regardless but I've seen 2 or 3 new faces this week and a couple of returning members who I haven't seen in like 6 months.

  • Same here, no noticeable uptick and the same people as always.

  • Sounds great lol, I hate a crowded gym

  • My gym is oddly silent and devoid of strange people doing strange things this January. It's like we lost members instead of temporarily gaining the New Year surplus.

Maybe people have just given up. Not a good sign for America, but I've never seen my gym so empty in January. I actually noticed we are missing a few regulars. Something bad is afoot.

  • Exact same here in Austria . Shits weird.

  • Is it normal to be able to remember the faces of the average regular? There's like a small handful of people I start to recognize (usually because something stands out about them) at mine, but other than that I'd have no idea who was new and who wasn't.

Well it's not a humongous gym and ive been going there for years, so yeah i do remember their faces and recognize them, but i dont have a clue what their names are cause i dont talk to the overwhelming majority of them except for asking them if the equipment i wanna use is occupied lol

  • Sounds good! Fewer people hogging benches.
