United have already shown their hand with Semenyo, but a number of defensive midfield options are being considered as Casemiro enters the final six months of his contract and Manuel Ugarte struggles to hold down a starting place.
Mainoo continues to push for a loan move in January, and Amorim says he won’t be allowed to leave unless United sign a replacement, so a more attack-minded midfielder is also a possibility.
Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is understood to top the list of targets, but the England international is unlikely to be available until the summer and won’t be short of other admirers.
United inquired about Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Conor Gallagher, of Atletico Madrid, late in the summer window and both players remain of interest along with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams – currently sidelined with the knee injury he sustained against United at Old Trafford – and Joao Gomes of Wolves.
Gallagher would be available in January, even though Atletico would insist on a £35m sale instead of a loan deal. Two other options to emerge for next month are former Wolves captain Ruben Neves, who wants to return to the Premier League from Saudi club Al-Hilal, and United academy graduate James Garner who is entering the final six months of his contract at Everton, who have the option to extend it by a year.
If United need to raise money for new signings in January – particularly a forward – then selling Joshua Zirkzee would be the obvious means of financing a deal.
Zirkzee, who joined for £37m in summer 2024, has struggled to fit in at United, first in Erik ten Hag’s 4-2-3-1 system which Amorim has now adopted, and the 3-4-2-1 favoured by the Portuguese coach.
Roma have been trying to take the former Bologna forward back to Serie A since the summer, although sources say that the reports claiming the Italians have made an offer to take Zirkzee on loan with an obligation to buy at the end of the season are premature.
Mainoo has made no secret of his desire to move to Italy on loan at Napoli after failing to make a single Premier League start so far this season but, again, United would want to have a replacement lined up before sanctioning a move.
Amorim has been happy to carry a smaller squad this season after failing to qualify for Europe for only the second time in 35 years meant a lighter fixture schedule. But after allowing nine players to leave in the summer, he would be reluctant to see a further reduction in numbers.
The fact that United have not moved to extend Casemiro’s contract or offer Harry Maguire new terms before the turn of the year suggests both players will be on their way in the summer, but it’s unlikely they would go in January.
tbf, on paper, Sancho was worth what we paid, and we'd structured that deal incredibly reasonably(we were paying like 17mil each season iirc- when the season before they wanted like.. 90-100mil upfront immediately).
The quality was genuinely there prior to the purchase. Sancho was just a lazy, entitled piece of shit who floundered here.
Antony and Hojlund were 100% poor deals immediately, they never showed any quality to be worth the prices we paid.
97th percentile in interceptions 77th percentile in tackles, 74th percentile in blocks. Can play dm, cm and both wingback spots because of his athleticsm. It makes sense to me that he can provide coverage in multiple different roles. He would be starting for us today if we had him.
He is also very young.. 25 is not bad and has longevity if he seriously decides to lock in for United... Plus he has that ex-chelsea connection w Mount.. so should be good
I don't think he has a buy back clause but if footy manager is anything to go by, he has a sell on clause which might work in our favor if we decide to get him in January.
I doubt it’s £15mil. We sold him to Everton for more than that. Would make zero sense on their end to have the clause be lower than what they bought him for unless it depreciates, which I also doubt.
He was sold for £9m with add ins up to £15m with a buy back of £15m. I’m assuming he met the add on stipulations at this stage. My issue is have we any other indication that he wants to return.
From day one I’ve had give feeling this is an agent sourced rumour seeing as Everton have a one year extension choice and seeing how he is playing so well it would not surprise me to find out it’s just a ploy for him to negotiate a new deal now rather than remain on the same terms until next year.
I think so too. I don’t think he fits into the project here either and Amorim keeps hammering that they won’t buy players unless they fit the plan. And I feel like Garner would just be bought as a squad player
Also would be looking for attacking options and that would allow Zirk to go to Roma. Anyhow, January is tough on good deals as of late, last great one was Bruno.
Rumours were there before even before the 4-2-3-1 game. Actually even before the game before that where we showed some back four action. Amorim even said in that game that they did play some game with back four and somehow it was leaked while he was trying to keep that a secret
The person who decides whether he gets into the England squad is the England manager and Tuchel has publicly said he needs minutes.
We’re almost halfway into the season and Mainoo has played 319 minutes all comps. Getting regular starts at any half decent club in the top 5 leagues would increase his chance of getting into the England squad.
See that’s a massive part in all of this. Let’s say United do loan him. Why would United loan him to a non-big 6 team that could potentially be competing with us for a European spot? He would have to go to one of the teams United feel won’t have a significant impact on them getting one of those spots.
Right now only 3 points separate 5th from 10th, and only 6 points (2 games) separate 5th from 14th. The league table is so tight this season because every team, aside from the top 3, have been wildly inconsistent. And even villa in the top 3 had a terrible start to the season. Villa is on an insane winning run and are highly outperforming their form/advanced stats metrics, which almost always indicates a team will “come back to earth” or “regress to the mean” later on. This just shows how much the majority of the league table is on a knife’s edge.
All of this to say, I just don’t think there are a lot of teams that we would be willing to send Mainoo to. It would essentially be the 3 teams in the relegation zone (Wolves, Burnley, West Ham) and maybe Leeds or Bournemouth? Forest are also there, but midfield is essentially the one area they don’t need reinforcements. So there really aren’t that many options that suit both United and the player as we head into the January window.
There's options outside of England though. Napoli would be good if they can guarantee playing time, or other big european teams. I'm not aware of anyone that would fit at present though.
Playing 90 minutes and more gamea for a mid table team would be better for his development and selection hopes than playing a bit part role for at United. You cannot perform at United if you are hardly getting a look in.
At the moment, Anderson, Wharton, Grealish etc are all ahead of him. Guess which teams they play for and are performing in week in week out? The best scenario for him is a loan move to another EPL team. Looking like the best scenario for both parties actually.
Playing for a smaller club in the prem doesn't really matter that much due to the demands of the league. Now if he goes to Saudi then that's different.
You just beat me to posting this. Exact same situation. You always take the better boss over the bigger job (assuming you can pay your bills in both cases). This is no different.
Lol by that logic why didn't heaven fight for his place at arsenal? he left to a team where he thought he would get more minutes, same thing kobbie wants to do
Because you are comparing a player who had never had much senior appearance before to a player who started the Euros final. You may think these are identical examples but they are not.
He started the final because he performed? Besides, do you honestly think he had had fair opportunity to show his skillset this season? Don't give me "but he started against Grimbsy and he was shit". Everyone was that day. The guy is behind Bruno on a 2 men midfield system and while the club has been sending out news of signing 2-3 additional midfielders. He is 20. Ofcourse, he is not going to have a mature thinking. You guys need to remember what the fuck you were doing when you were 20
And yet he grabbed this opportunity by two hands. And Casemiro with 4 UCLs was almost an outcast last season but look at him. But Mainoo should be treated special because?
No one is asking to be treated special, the player wants play time and he doesn’t think he can get that at United.
Casemiro was almost an outcast because Ruben didn’t want him in the team, not because Casemiro was performing poorly or there were people ahead of him. Heaven didn’t get a chance before the injuries we had, if he wanted to leave to get first team chances, is that him asking to treated differently?
Fought back over who? Collyer? Ugarte? Ruben didn’t fancy him simply, Casemiro didn’t do anything different. Just like how it took Ruben 12 months to realise he realised Casemiro was the best DM he had and played him. It’s that simple.
Because if I ask you, what did Casemiro do differently, you ain’t got a clue.
Again if I ask you why did Ruben sideline Casemiro there was no reason.
Ridiculous take... Unfortunate that he's injured but Manager has not shown any willingness to give him chances. Manager wins 1 game and suddenly this subreddit has amnesia.
There's so much undeserved negative PR around Mainoo.
The minutes he has been given, he hasn't justified why he should start over Casemiro & Bruno. You will be deluded if you think he is better than the two.
There's so much undeserved negative PR around Mainoo.
How ? When his brother even wore a stupid t-shirt?
Agree with Amorim's comments on the players being a bit entitled. But he also needs to manage them better. If he had some minutes here and there it would've been better and instead he just stuck to Bruno CM for the whole damn season.
Idk why people are so against Gallagher. He was Chelsea's best player the season he got sold. Could be one of those Gordon/Ramsey esque signing for us.
ofcourse we need to buy players to fill certain needs in the squad, but getting a long term squad which we can depend upon is equally, if not more important
Anderson won't come here if we don't get to the UCL lmfao, he'll go straight to Liverpool
I mean liking the post concerning your brother wearing a free Mainoo shirt is pretty poor whatever way you spin it. If Garnacho did the same everyone would've been going apeshit.
“Kobbie Mainoo did not make a public statement himself, but reports indicate he was aware of and endorsed the message on the 'Free Kobbie Mainoo' t-shirt worn by his half-brother, Jordan Mainoo”
People are refusing to see though, He’s been trying to leave since the summer ffs. When he posted the twitter message in reference to the movie whiplash.
His character. Heaven fought his way into the team. And Amorim commented him on his attitude whilst Mainoo is still living on "he played in Euro final" card
To be fair Heaven didn't fight his way into the team, he had to play because Maguire, De Ligt and Maz are unavailable with Licha coming back after a long absence. However, Heaven hasn't kicked up a fuss and asked for a loan due to lack of playing time. He waited for his chance and he's taken it.
Be serious now. Using United legend Ronaldo and then two examples who City weren’t in for? And since when were Liverpool and Arsenal in for Mbeumo?
City can pay more, City can guarantee Europe and you get to play under Pep. Anderson is reportedly a city fan. Semanyo wasn’t swayed by our magnitude, I don’t know why you think Anderson would be.
Christ; what’s with the attitude? It’s an opinion, based on the thinking of why would one of the best midfield prospects in the PL want to come to our basket case of a club? Like Semenyo, I’m guessing he would prefer to go to a stable environment with guaranteed CL football next season.
And we never spend big in Jan (Mata and Fernandes in the last 12 years off the top of my head). I hope to god I am so completely wrong and we get him, but I just can’t see it. To me it just sounds like tabloid journalism where we get linked to every single top player.
Just saying, we didn’t have INEOS the past 12 years so saying we didn’t spend big then vs now isn’t as relevant. We are entering the unknown in that regard slightly.
But tend to agree anyway. Summer seems more likely. If ever.
Who are they targeting?
United have already shown their hand with Semenyo, but a number of defensive midfield options are being considered as Casemiro enters the final six months of his contract and Manuel Ugarte struggles to hold down a starting place.
Mainoo continues to push for a loan move in January, and Amorim says he won’t be allowed to leave unless United sign a replacement, so a more attack-minded midfielder is also a possibility.

Gallagher would be available in January, even though Atletico would insist on a £35m sale instead of a loan deal. And who might leave?
If United need to raise money for new signings in January – particularly a forward – then selling Joshua Zirkzee would be the obvious means of financing a deal.
Zirkzee, who joined for £37m in summer 2024, has struggled to fit in at United, first in Erik ten Hag’s 4-2-3-1 system which Amorim has now adopted, and the 3-4-2-1 favoured by the Portuguese coach.

Amorim said Maguire and Case depends on whether we have Europe next season or not.
Way we are going no Europe 🤣
Zirkzee was only 37M??
that was even better business than I thought. amazing how much easier it is to move a player on when you don't pay 70M+ for them
Iirc he had a release clause, but we agreed a slightly higher fee to spread out the payments.
37 million for Zirkzee is not some kind of mind-numbing deal; as he has demonstrated, he's not that terribly good.
This was merely a singular instance in which we didn't massively overpay for a bang-average player.
it's not my fault that I'm still shellshocked by the Antony and Hojlund deals
Can’t forget Sancho the season before Antony…
Tbf, sancho deal only looks bad in hindsight, the others were bad at the start.
tbf, on paper, Sancho was worth what we paid, and we'd structured that deal incredibly reasonably(we were paying like 17mil each season iirc- when the season before they wanted like.. 90-100mil upfront immediately).
The quality was genuinely there prior to the purchase. Sancho was just a lazy, entitled piece of shit who floundered here.
Antony and Hojlund were 100% poor deals immediately, they never showed any quality to be worth the prices we paid.
True but like maybe don’t buy bums and then you don’t have to worry either way.
"Only". He's worth half that.
I don't understand the Gallagher idea. In the two man midfield we need a defensive option like Casemiro more than the other.
Gallagher’s name is only hanging around bc Mainoo wants out. If we can keep Mainoo home then we won’t need Gallagher
Just a waste of time tbh. If he wasn't injured now would be a good time for him to get some minutes anyway...
And as I recall, part of the reason Gallagher is available is because he struggles in a two man midfield due to his lack of technical ability.
Atletico don't play a 4-3-3, it's typically a 4-4-2 with a double pivot and wide mids or even a 5-3-2.
Plus he has that ex-chelsea connection w Mount.. so should be good
Can't pass tho. Replacing Ugarte with Ugarte
We should buy back Garner instead.
If James Garner having £15m buy-back clause is true, It should be no brainer.
Super shout!
An affordable squad improvement option and solves the academy graduate in the match day squad dilemma too.
Sign him up!
No we didn't, we sold him for c.£9m...
£9m rising to £15m with add-ons. A £15m buy back clause still wouldn't make sense, and I can't find any evidence for that figure.
EDIT: Later reports on the transfer, from The Athletic, said there is no buy back clause.
Yeah I remember when we sold him there was no clause
Well pull the oldie but goodie only we are capable of, buy back for 100 mill.

£9mil plus add-ons to £15mil for appearances which he’s surely reached lol
It is a sell on clause.
Even if he was not from the academy, he would a great addition to our thin squad, he is not Wharton but at that price it is a steal.
The young lads are not ready and we desperately need more midfielders.
This should be completed swiftly.
Also would be looking for attacking options and that would allow Zirk to go to Roma. Anyhow, January is tough on good deals as of late, last great one was Bruno.
Last great deal in any window is Bruno tbh so in that sense Jan is better than summer
De ligt and maz was solid. Maz was even more of a bargain.
Solid and bargains maybe but not great
Dorgu and Heaven last Jan starting to look like very tidy business
35m pounds for Gallagher is ridiculous, let them keep him
I don't particularly rate Gallagher but 35m gets you fuck all these days
That’s not true mate you can get 4 Freddo’s for that sort of money
Fred cost way more than that!
It gets you rashford apparently
He's fuck all. Not even a bench option.
Loan with a 25m option is what I’d be happy with.
I think that's a pretty good price honestly. He's got a few decent premier league years experience and is still quite young
Wheeler sometimes really act as temu version of Fabrizio..keeps on recycling the same stuff time and again
Mainoo has a shot to earn the managers trust and he prefers a loan.
Games gone.
Let's be real though. Bruno s back in a few weeks after which Kobbie s position doesn't really change.
Not true! If rumors of us transitioning to a 4-3-3 are true, then Mainoo already has a spot waiting for him.
One injury hit game and there are rumors we're moving to 4-3-3?
The rumors are saying that the system will shift slowly now that players understand the system.
But it’s a wait and see
Rumours were there before even before the 4-2-3-1 game. Actually even before the game before that where we showed some back four action. Amorim even said in that game that they did play some game with back four and somehow it was leaked while he was trying to keep that a secret
He has sufferitis
It honestly doesn’t make sense, he wants to make the English squad but thinks playing for a smaller team is going to make it happen?
If he performs for United he’s a lock.
Non big 6 team players in the England squad:
Burn, Guehi, Konsa, Quansah, Anderson, Henderson, Rogers, Scott, Wharton, Bowen, Kane & Rashford (at massive clubs tho lol).
This was just from the official England website.
Forest, palace, villa, and west ham were all much better teams than united last year.
My point is that he will get more eyes if he does well at United, even if it’s for a small stint.
It’s a completely irrelevant point though.
Really depends on who he could be loaned to, and get regular playing time.

He’s not been given a chance to perform for United tho? Outside of very late substitutions. He’d have a chance now with Bruno out but he’s injured.
How is he going to perform here when he gets no gametime? Serious question? And I hope you dont say Bruno is injured.
Bruno will be back before February (and this also ignores that Mainoo is also out rn so can't even play all the games Bruno is missing
rashford left united for a 'smaller team' and immediately got back in the england squad, no current united players will make the squad
To be honest there’s a weak spot for the English team at LW, and rashford has a history of doing well there for the squad.
If Mainoo kills it for let’s say the wolves, I doubt he’s able to make it over a very packed midfield.
well he's not going to go to a relegation level team, he wants to go to napoli who are in a title race in serie a
Then he is never getting into English first team. The midfield is already stacked with EPL midfielders
Exactly my point; even if he saw heavy minutes; his chances are minimal.
To be fair he’s not guaranteed a starting spot for Napoli. But he will probably see more minutes assuming Bruno comes back in 4-6 weeks.
true but he could potentially get more minutes plus win the league vs sitting on the bench if he stays
He'll never make the WC squad no matter who he plays for, too many good players ahead of him in the pecking order.
I'm 100% convinced even if he had played every minute this season he'd still be out of the running
Yup I agree
maybe he just doesn't like the manager, none of us know what goes on behind the scenes
You don't play for the manager you play for the club. It doesn't matter where he goes chances are they will change the manager while he's there
if you've ever had a job with a shitty manager you would realise how bad it can make your experience, even if you work for a great company
You just beat me to posting this. Exact same situation. You always take the better boss over the bigger job (assuming you can pay your bills in both cases). This is no different.
I have had a job with a shitty manager. I worked even harder and bidded my time until she left. That's what someone with work ethic does
That's right brother. It's all about malicious compliance.
There is no doubt that these Carrington graduates are entitled. Heaven fought for his place, why can't he?
Lol by that logic why didn't heaven fight for his place at arsenal? he left to a team where he thought he would get more minutes, same thing kobbie wants to do
Arsenal had no patience for youngsters & in any case Man utd > Arsenal
There’s a difference between being 6th on the depth chart and 4th lol.
Heaven knew he had a much easier pathway to getting into this United team and seeing minutes than Arsenal.
Also a three at the back system makes it easier for him to not only get minutes, but also perform better.
Cause he wants to play in the world cup, so if he doesn't get game time here, he'll try to do it elsewhere.
Because you are comparing a player who had never had much senior appearance before to a player who started the Euros final. You may think these are identical examples but they are not.
Starting in Euro final doesn't mean Jack if you can't perform. That's history
You guys need to remember what the fuck you were doing when you were 20
But he started & he was shit. Casemiro was an outcast last season but he fought his way back
Everyone was shit that game and they have started a lot more game than Mainoo has. Because they are not competing against Bruno for their position.
If he is shit like others then let Casemiro & Bruno start every week because they are more experienced
Fuck me Casemiro fought for his place and he's one of the most decorated active players... Love Kobbie and I want him to succeed here, but ffs
Heaven didn’t fight for his place, players were injured. It’s a difference. You think if MDL wasn’t injured he would have played?!
And yet he grabbed this opportunity by two hands. And Casemiro with 4 UCLs was almost an outcast last season but look at him. But Mainoo should be treated special because?

Again if I ask you why did Ruben sideline Casemiro there was no reason.
Lol come on. What is his shot? Now that Bruno is injured? Bruno will be back and Mainoo will not game time. You cant fault him here.
A loan is good. He can come bavk next season when we hopefully have more games and continue to play
Surely he can't expect to be a regular starter at his age in Man Utd lol, giving up is always easy.
Not the point. Hes not getting game time and the OP says he should stay to do so.
If ge stays this season, he is not going to play. A loan, key word here, is good for him personally
Are we sure this isn't the same recycled news from a few weeks ago before Bruno went down?
He doesn't rate the manager...
And the manager doesn't rate him either. Neither do Tuchel
And that's why he wants to leave... i doubt he he cares that the worst performing utd manager in the prem era doesn't rate him
Is Tuchel the one who told him he need more playing time to get into the national team .. that's a strange thing to tell a payer he doesn't rate..
He does that's why he is throwing tantrums through his brother.
So that he can leave..
Ridiculous take... Unfortunate that he's injured but Manager has not shown any willingness to give him chances. Manager wins 1 game and suddenly this subreddit has amnesia.

He hasn't justified because he hasn't been given a fair chance, a run of games. Do you expect someone to be great right from the get go?
Agree with Amorim's comments on the players being a bit entitled. But he also needs to manage them better. If he had some minutes here and there it would've been better and instead he just stuck to Bruno CM for the whole damn season.
Not really any news. I doubt that Gallagher is gonna make us better as well
Idk why people are so against Gallagher. He was Chelsea's best player the season he got sold. Could be one of those Gordon/Ramsey esque signing for us.
Why would we sign Gallagher to be our chef
because he's the same type of player as ugarte and there's a reason atelti wants to get rid after spending however much on him just 2 years ago
Where are you getting this from?
We watched him that season
we REALLY need to make it to the UCL (not European football, UCL FOOTBALL) for Anderson to consider coming here.
please Ruben, fucking hell man
We've shown time and time again this simply isnt the case for a lot of players.
Chelsea got a lot of great talent in their banter period.
We can too.
The best 3 clubs now (depending on what you consider them as)
Are ready pretty stacked in the attack and midfield.
Giving us the opportunity to go uncontested or limited contested for top talent the next 4-5 years.
Literally got Di Maria and Case after MOTM performances in UCL finals without Europe
I’m sorry but if you think it’s solely down to Amorim to get us into UCL, then you’re delusional.
The club needs to back him and buy players this Jan. Otherwise we are not getting that top 5 spot.
ofcourse we need to buy players to fill certain needs in the squad, but getting a long term squad which we can depend upon is equally, if not more important
Anderson won't come here if we don't get to the UCL lmfao, he'll go straight to Liverpool
Out of all the targets, my pick was elliot anderson too. Ig we can let ineos run the business lads.
Mainoo can leave. Not a fan of his attitude
What attitude?
We’ve seen no indication of any attitude from Mainoo
The attitude to prefer a loan move over fighting for a spot
The shit one.
We are not buying Anderson in January. Or this summer. He may be on our shortlist, but we’re not on his list
And why do you say that?
If we’re in a race to sign players with City, the players going to City
You mean like Ronaldo? Or Mbeumo with arsenal, liverpool and spurs? Or perhaps Yoro with Madrid?
Sometimes our fans forget the magnitude of the club they support.
No Anderson is actually more of a City fan. We might possibly get Wharton+Baleba
I would be happier if we get Wharton. His left foot is a delight.
Pep could be leaving, no? His future is uncertain.
He could be but we can only judge off what we know
did he tell you that?
If ever.
Let him leave, but he won't find a club that will be willing to pay 200k wages
Anderson + Garner and loaning Mainoo to Everton would be nice.
I’d love to see Conor Gallagher back in Palace’s midfield 😉
Gallagher needs to bite his employer because that price tag is ridiculous.
Top target is a midfielder who's not better than Mainoo. We love to downgrade.
Elliot Anderson is one of the best midfielders in the premier league. He'd be a massive upgrade.
I don't disagree but Kobbie is much more talented. The propaganda has worked hard that Kobbie cannot defend or run.
He doesn't want to stay. He's not worth begging him to stay.
Apples and oranges. We’re looking for a Casemiro replacement, not a Bruno replacement.
