Its r/complaints, which looks like its genuine as its on the frontpage constantly but honestly some of the posts seem like the OP is trying to push how ridiculous their posts can be before people start calling them out.
It was definitely in 2016 too, and 2020, and 2024, in fact as long as there has been an internet, there has been this type of discussion.
I recently found the Usenet archives (kind of like a proto Reddit / internet forum that began in 1980) and it's pretty entertaining to see that all the tropes you see on the modern internet (overexaggerating every political issue, comparing X person to Nazis/Commies, saying the current decade sucks to the past and that everything modern sucks) has been around since 1980.
on twitter at least, 2016 was unspeakably bad for this stuff. like a full order of magnitude worse than anything i saw in 2012. people correctly got upset about trump, but had the most braindead things to say about all of it, and as loudly as possible. endless parade of stupid assholes calling each other geniuses for saying "dianne feinstein is basically tony stark! and mitt romney is the hulk!!!" or whatever
The "election in three years" tips it off as being a joke, but up to that point, it read pretty much the same as when people post this crap with full sincerity
Out of all the books mentioned here I think the Hunger Games is the least egregious because it actually handled it's themes of oppression and revolution really well. Literally one of the things the second book makes sure to point out is that even without direct participation by Katniss, other Districts were pushing back against the Capitol.
I think it always breaks down to those most-read works of fiction when the people try to make a political argument because they likely have never read a non-fiction work outside of compulsory reads in their school curricula. I am hesitant to call Trump a Fascist as I always try to compare him to A. H. and B. M., and for both, he doesn't really fit, both were, for example, much quicker to persecute their respective opposition movements and parties. I prefer authoritarian as a predicate, and, to come back to the original topic, recommend essays like Ludwig Quidde's “Caesarenwahnsinn”. (Caesarean Madness) He comes closer to an erroneous, benigned czar or emperor, not a Fascist. At least Fascists were coherent in their actions, if often paranoid schizos.

Lots of history classes don't cover the actions of those two before the war, but when you look closer, there absolutely was a buildup just like we're seeing today. These takeovers didn't happen overnight. The anti-jewish propaganda displayed in museums was absolutely part of a strategy to normalize and ease the country into an extreme situation rather than jumping right into the deep end, in order to minimize the resistance from the general population.

That's right! The Second Italo-Ethiopian War, about which I am currently learning a little, although my focus, due to my research on this level altogether, is focused on the League of Nations, lies on the sanctions that were imposed upon Italy, or shoudl've been, is usually understood to be a precursor to the Second World War. The Treaty of Locarno, which was overseen and administered by the League, gave Hitler a chance to plan his invasion of Poland ahead because it essentially cut its (Poland's) allies (France in particular) off from their protégé. Or at least I believe so. I need to read up on it, but didn't have time yet because it is only second in line, after the reasons for the US' absence form the League, after having contributed the lion's share to its design. (See Woodrow Wilson's “Fourteen Points”, inter alia)

Researchers of the „Institut für Zeitgeschichte” (Institute of History) based in Munich, who also oversee the second tranche of Hitler's speeches, writings, commands, &c. (the first one was compiled by K. G. Saur, a former publisher that is now an imprint of the academic journal and book publishing giant Walter De Gruyter), have said that Hitler's „Kampf” was first received with chagrin, given that his views were so modest, he was barely a backbencher in his time, his antisemitism was contemporaneous. That's why no-one bat an eye when he climbed the career ladder in the Deutschen Arbeiter-Partei (DAP). Some perceived him with rolling eyes as he tended to “take people hostage” when he gave little impromptu speeches in restaurants when the guests were waiting for their soup and meals. (As an example that one can read on the IfZ's website, specifically on the page in which they announce their yearslong work to compile those documents. They also announced, to my delight, that once it's done, they'll publish it open-access online in digital editions, so that only the printed edition will cost you money to cover the costs of that. That's possible because of state subsidies for this project. So far, we only have Max Domarus' underwhelming edition of speeches &c. &c., which is laced with interrupting comments of the editor, as if no-one ever told him about footnotes and endnotes, or prefaces) I think that he was a child of his times; combined with his short temper and megalomania, what happened was perhaps inevitable. We must learn from this and implement mechanisms that stop men like him in his way before it's too late. The US must learn its lesson yet, from Donald J. Trump.

Finally, even though this comment is already growing out of bounds, I think that more school hours must be invested in history lessons, so that teachers can dive deeper into certain subjects and perhaps even contrast their country's history with others, to identify parallels at least in terms of developments, maybe even point out shared histories. The US' involvement in European interwar history seems underrepresented; too little time is invested in Middle-Eastern history before the foundation of Israel, it may help people understand certain rivalries not centred around Israel, for example why Iran appears as an outlier that allows even some arch enemies to unite against them. There is so much that I never heard about until I started my own research. I learnt more about Mussolini from David P. Chandler's “Political Biography of Pol Pot” than I did during history classes. I don't blame my history teacher of the last two years before graduation, he did a sterling job also teaching us about Franco-German relations postwar, and how we became best friends and allies in the EU after centuries of hostilities. But two school hours per week are too little to teach anything properly! We must understand the importance of understand history in those days!
“i am the resistance” and then they say to vote 😭 motherfucker is probably afraid to go on public transit because it smells bad or something. nobody saying “i am the resistance…. VOTE!” are the ones protesting outside ice facilities. get your ass to a direct action protest if you wanna say shit like this
They claim to be the resistance and yet their views are held by nearly the entirety of Hollywood, academia, the music industry, a very large amount of corporate America, and multiple state governments. Plus, until last year, the White House and Congress.
This has to be rage bait, it's just too silly
Yeah the fact they covered the sub shows it’s prolly a satire sub

Good lord that’s unfortunate
Look, I agree that everyone should vote. But that would have been a very boring book if Katniss just voted President Snow out.
do you remember around 2016 where these types of posts went mega viral? or was i just on tumblr way too much?
Oof that’s 2012 core man not 16
You'd be surprised. I see some proper cringe do well even now
I was too young to be on tumblr back in 2012 but yeah that checks out

Never was a Tumblr person, myself

How does that tip it off?
"take dire action by voting in the election that is over 3 years away" is obvious satire
Right, of course XD
Damn he's a double racist
Double racism all the way!

He is way too self-absorbed.
This is satire
This is obviously a joke, stand down
lol voting isnt going to solve this
Wait a second, talks about Trump bad and all these YA references, yet calls on Crusaders to reform and strike on the Holy Land? Interesting
Yea, I think I ate the onion on this one
