I recently heard back from a job at Scholastic. Specifically, their flex sales book fair consultant. They got back to me super quick and at first I was really excited, then I started reading the job reviews and I’m a little unmotivated by it now. Some people have said that it’s a dead end job and the pay is awful.
For context, I’m looking for a job to give me more time flexibility and the pay is okay. Just wondering if anyone has worked this role and what they loved/disliked. Is it a good way to get your foot in the door to the publishing industry? Anyone moving to NYC with another publishing opportunity?
I've heard mixed reviews from friends working at Scholastic. The higher up you are, the better your outlook (which is usual). I would double check because some of the book fair team actually has off during summer school months - which would be a bonus for flexibility. It's a good job to get yourself into sales, just do yourself a favor and make sure that sales is where you'd like to be. It can be hard to switch from sales elsewhere, speaking from experience in trade publishing.
Definitely take into account what reviews say and reach out to some people in a similar role, if you can before replying to your offer.
