Many saw this coming a few months out, but Virginia legislators have filed another assault weapons ban (along with a slew of other anti gun bills). They tried this in 2020, and it was successfully beaten back in large part to the incredible turn out at VCDL Lobby day in Richmond. We NEED to hit similar levels of turnout if we're going to have any hope at beating it back again

  • So this bill would ban basically ALL semiautomatic rifles and pistols and any magazines >10 rounds?

    [facepalm]

Creating a law whose sole purpose is to antagonize the 2A should be automatically deemed unconstitutional on its face and immediately considered null and void.

The Supreme Court needs to state this in an upcoming 2A case decision to stop this kind of shit or these kinds of egregious laws will keep spreading.

Obviously it should be beaten down by the supreme court, but California's ban has stood for decades. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for the Supreme Court to save us. We need to be active in stopping the legislation ourselves.

I agree. The Supreme Court has historically not been our ally in my opinion.

It’s almost as if the Supreme Court has not read the Constitution.

I would like a Federal Law which bars for life from office any elected Rep. or Senator, state or federal, who sponsor or co-sponsors any "gun control" law which is found facially unconstitutional; and/or allows damages against them if found unconstitutional on an "as-applied" basis in any case.

I was literally thinking the same. There need to be repercussions for denying, or attempting to deny, people their constitutional rights. Otherwise this "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" strategy will continue.

You can’t depend on government to protect you from government or to punish itself for usurpation of power. So, I wouldn’t go expecting anything like that to ever happen.

But you know they won’t. They do as little to protect 2A as they possibly can, in every pro 2A ruling, and even create exemptions to 2A ( or allow continued infringements ) that are not supported by the text or the standard of review they, themselves, set forth.

So this bill would ban basically ALL semiautomatic rifles and pistols and any magazines >10 rounds?

    [facepalm]

Yes. It seems to be a very similar copy of what was recently passed in WA.

Supreme Court already stated this and it's largely ignored.

"A law repugnant to the Constitution is void."

  • I was told over and over and over again that democrats weren’t anti gun?! What happened/s

They’ll say that laws like AWBs and magazine bans aren’t anti-gun, they’re just “common sense”.

I’ve seen it ad nauseam here on Reddit.

    Person A: “Democrats are anti-gun”

Person B: “They’re not anti-gun, they’re just pro-common sense. No one needs an assault rifle or 100 round clip in civilized society”

    It’s infuriating.

"I'm not anti-gun, i love and respect the 2nd amendment more than anything else in the world. I just think we just need common sense laws like banning AWBs, banning mags over 10rds, banning firearm ownership by people under 21, requiring mental health screening to buy a gun, requiring gun licensing and permits to purchase, banning concealed carry, banning suppressors, ammunition background checks, and requiring microstamping"

People will literally say that completely unironically and with a straight face.

I just think we just need common sense laws like banning AWBs

YES! We should ban Assault Weapon Bans!

"The Democrats are not antigun" becomes "the Democrats are only passing 'common sense' gun control" which quickly becomes "I'm not a single issue voter."

Well you know what Jimmy Strawman, I am also not a single issue voter, but any politician who campaigns on ignoring any part of the US Constitution will not get my vote.

I always say that i'm not a single-issue voter, but there are certain disqualifiers that will stop me from ever voting for someone. Supporting gun control is one of those.

Just like how i'm not a single-issue voter when it comes to genocide or racism, but i would never vote for someone who openly campaigned on a platform of ethnic cleansing or brining back slavery.

Democrats as a voting block are largely mixed on the issue. The problem is that some very large DNC donors and senior members are absolutely hellbent on killing the idea of firearms ownership.

I say this just to point out that as a tactic for advancing gun rights, attacking your democrat friends who are ambivalent about guns isn't going to get them to stop being democrat and isn't going to help protect gun rights. You need to yell at the elected representatives.

Nah I used to think that way. That was until what is about to happen in Va happened to us in Illinois. Our governor ran on and promised gun bans. Democrats argued with me until I was blue in the face, many of who were gun owners, that it wouldn’t happen. That it was ok do vote D. Well guess what? The moment he got a supermajority they rammed that shit through.

So no. I’m sick and tired of the gaslighting from the democrats and their voters on this issue. They are anti gun. You give them an inch and you’ll turn into Ca just like we did here in IL.

They absolutely are not. From the official DNC platform:

"Democrats will establish universal background checks, a step supported by the vast majority of Americans, including gun owners. We will once again ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. We will require safe storage for guns. Democrats will end the gun industry’s immunity from liability, so gunmakers can no longer escape accountability. We will pass a national red flag law to prevent tragedies by keeping weapons out of dangerous hands. We will increase funding to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) for enforcement and prosecution, and to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for firearm background checks. And, because the gun violence epidemic is a public health crisis, we will fund gun violence research across the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as community violence interventions."

Democrats/leftists as a group are NOT pro 2A/gun ownership. Pretending that they are when they've clearly stated on their political platform that they are not is at best delusional and at worst a lie/misinformation.

They fact that the few that might be have to still roll out with "I support the 2A, but..." or "I'm not a single issue voter" is a very clear indication that they will happily sell out your 2A rights if the party tells them to.

I will go a step further and say the ONLY place I see leftists (not Democrats) claiming to be "pro-gun" is on reddit. I'm starting to think it's a small minority cope/standard trope that redditors repeat "because".

Any leftist, whether they are friends or acquaintances, are all primarily anti-gun and at the same time claim they aren't Democrat. They "own" a gun or two, but they're all 100% for gun control any time a mass shooting occurs. The same people I know who claim that standard Democrats are too "conservative" (yet every election they vote for rank-and-file Dems). I haven't met this pro-gun leftist ever.

They arent anti-gun, they just dont care and the people that fund their lives and campaigns ARE anti-gun so they are going to please them to keep the dollars coming in.

I’m sorry but if you constantly vote for a party that runs on and passes anti gun legislation you are anti gun.

  • If it’s anything like WA, it doesn’t matter how many people show up. There were like 10x the number of people who showed up to voice opposition to our AWB or Mag Ban (don’t remember which), and they passed it anyway.

The billionaires are bankrolling most of these gun control efforts, Steve Ballmer, Paul Allen (may he rot in hell), Michael Bloomberg, Nick Hanauer (New York venture capitalist) paid for most of the gun control here in Washington.

Doesn't matter how many people oppose something. Politicians, and thus laws, will always swing towards the (M/B)illions in donor dollars.

Breaking news, local man argues on reddit that actually people shouldn't bother doing anything to stand up for themselves

Breaking news. Jackass on reddit is illiterate and thinks people say things they never said.

Just because I don't think protests do much to sway politicians, doesn't mean I think nothing does.

Voting. Voting is what matters. Instead of protesting the laws the idiots in office are pushing through, campaign to get them out of office so they can't pass them in the first place.

Voting absolutely matters and we shouldn't forget that, but our whole system of government is way more complex than elections and our power and duty as citizens doesn't just stop after elections. That's unfortunately where we are now

  • Can we bring back tar and feathering please

Good luck trying that w/o the feds finding out about it.

I like the guillotine myself. Seems to really drive home the point.

I see what you did there

  • You cant count on anyone beating it back, when the Blue is in control all hope is lost, they all like the money that the anti gun lobby pads their pockets with. Look at Colorado, we are fucked because the Liberals are in control and the anti-gun lobby helps keep them in power with all their $$$$$. No matter how much money I give (and I do give) to NAGR, NRA, FPC, CSSA, RMGO none of it helps. Nothing like being helpless when your rights are being violated.

Yeah people said the same thing as you right before they beat it back 6 years ago

6 years ago there were moderate/blue dog dems that voted against their party to prevent the gun bills. They all quit, or lost primaries to farther left dems who have no such leanings. You should prepare yourself.

  • It’s funny, when this was happening to CA and NY people said, “Just move” now VA is being added to that list, how many times do people need to “just move” before they realize that serious litigation and political activism is needed before this bullshit comes to their state as well?

  • 2A bros from MD and DC are counting on the VA bros.

Also remember to call out TGOs

  • There’s a reason you bought them fyi. And it’s not a stupid ass boating accident.

  • Dang that sucks. I was hoping to live in Virginia and work in DC when I move back to the USA.

  • The AWB will pass before the year is out imho. The writing has been on the wall for years.
