so ive not read left hand of darkness yet, but i just watched the season finale of plur1bus and saw the MC reading it. anyone want to fill me in on the obvious reference being dropped here

  • So this was discussed on the Ursula K LeGuin subreddit and with everything else Pluribus, it’s kinda ambiguous. Could be something to do with gender, could allude to the ending, it’s not overt. You should read it during the break and report back to us if you see anything glaring!

    I'm so backlogged :*(

Ah man but you should make space for Ursula! She completely reformatted my taste in sci-fi and literature as a whole.

  • The book is about a human ambassador to a planet where the people are all agender/non-binary/bisexual. It looks at the various effects this has on the personal and sociopolitical effects this has on the society. It also has a sensitive commentary on sexuality as the human male MC falls in love with one of the aliens. It kind of parallels Carol falling in love with Zosia/everyone.

This! And because I think Carol is just trying to really lean in to her new choice. Maybe she is justifying her choices as that of an “anthropologist” like Genly AI (Mc of LHOD).

At the end of the day I think it was just a cute Easter egg that nods to similar themes. Nothing mystery related. But who knows!
