Is there a difference between the bumper plates vs cast iron. Like for actual strength building?
Bumpers will make the bar more "whippy" by distributing the weight out toward the ends which makes deadlift a little easier but can make squat and bench harder. When you get strong enough, you won't have enough sleeve space on the bar to load the weight you want with bumpers. And the precision / error margin of the weight of the bumpers might be wider. But other than those issues, no. You can get very strong training on bumpers or iron or steel.
More of a home/garage gym topic but for anyone in that world, what adjustable dumbbells do you have?
Looking at a variety of options and right now it seems like you either trade off between durability and speed of changing weights, or pay a crap ton for both (REP x Pepin). I'm leaning towards durability and sacrificing speed because don't really do drop sets and the like.
Yea, I've been looking into them recently as well and it just depends on if you want durability, speed of changing weights, how heavy you want them to be, price, and things like that. Personally, I'm biasing my research towards the lowest price for the most amount of weight. I plan on keeping them inside and don't plan on dropping them, so I'm not as focused on durability.
If you aren't into speed, have you looked into loadable dumbbell handles from Rogue and the like? If you already have a bunch of standard weights at home, then a loadable handle can be a cheap and durable way of getting things done.
No I don't really ever drop dumbbells either (even in a gym) but some of them with plastic parts make me think they won't last a very long time.
I'm currently closest to pulling the trigger on a pair of Eisenlink dumbbells (well, a Chinese white label version). All metal and should basically last forever as far as I can tell. I'd buy an 80lbs pair but there's room to upgrade to 145lbs, and I do like that upgrade option too, even if unlikely to bother.
A loadable handle is an okay option but I don't have a lot of smaller plates so it gets a bit awkward.
The Bowflex is one of the originals and has plastic parts in them. One of my clients has had his for over 10 years and still working fine, so it seems like they last if they're taken care of.
How much do the Eisenlink copycats cost?
Yeah that's fair, I do suspect if you're careful enough the plastic should last. But if you ever do need to drop or whatever. I know some of the new ones got a bad rep. Nuobells I think.
£400. I know you're US based though. 85lbs REP x Pepins would be double. Some others in between where you rotate handle but as above, just unsure on long term durability.
Equipped DL question
How do you feel about wearing loose-ish stock preds under an Inzer TRX single ply as a meet set up?
Im dialed in on my squat and bench kits, still playing around with my DL set up.
I got loose-ish preds, a mostly new single ply TRX, gangster tight Overkill briefs, and a LUP at my disposal.
My only advice would be, that with deadlift, less gear is often more.
Probably a lot of personal preference-I know my OK briefs revealed a whole new world to me when I started pulling in them, and I can’t imagine going back to previous setups. That said, I’m a big fan of the LUP to pull in, I like the adjustability. This also comes from a guy who never had a TRX that fit right, so YMMV.
Should be fine. There's a lot of personal preference to it though so you may want to experiment with a few different configurations. I deadlifted in just briefs for a while.
Elliot Sykes is gonna put up a huge total next year. Looks like he's made huge progress on squat and bench anyway.
I don't follow a lot of these guys much but I'd love to see some good competition for Perkins.
I think I saw Perkins talk about 880-900 at Sheffield though which is just mindboggling. I don't know if he has any desires to go up a weight class but it would certainly be intriguing.
If Perk misses some attempts at Sheffield he might have to show up at PA nats to fight for worlds spot. Mid 800s might not be a safe total with the pace Sykes is progressing.
Anything short of 865 I think Elliott takes it unless his training tails off. Him and Will Ball seem to have just constant progress all the time.
Haha I feel so conflicted about predicting something like that. On one hand, everything seems to point that he is good for ~20 more kilos on both squat and bench compared to jr worlds and that would mean he's way past 850 already but still it just feels so wrong to even predict numbers that high for nats. I guess we'll see.
