Someone asked about Chris on Facebook and Colin's reply was:

"That's for me to know and you to find out..."

Given the first shows are a year away, they might still be negotiating with him.

    parent
    8 points astralinsomnia

They recently recored an album together, I bet he may be involved

    parent root
    11 points 4ctmam

Yes but if he definitely was then he would be part of the announcement. My best guess is that since it's still a year away, Chris can't quite commit yet. He regularly plays for London musicals, which is a pretty cushy and stable job. He's obviously fond of his time with PT but chances are he might not be willing to travel in a van to play relatively small shows if he might be doing a run of West End shows ainstead. Time will tell, I guess. I really do hope he joins, though. It would make the thing more legit and more exciting.

  • 31 points F1Phreek

    a PT tribute band.

    parent
  • 12 points MadCritterYT

Well this is a sign that they’re obviously not averse to playing PT material… so it’s really up to the other three whether or not we get a full reunion sometime in the future

    parent
    5 points Golthorr

If Colin is there, it will be without Richard then...

    parent root
    4 points arriving_somewhere1

Why you say so? I thought Richard genuinely loved playing with Colin!

    parent root
    -2 points Infamous-Dog-6303

Richard didn’t like Colin’s laziness and sloppiness when playing live

    parent root
    13 points arriving_somewhere1

Damn. In the last documentary, Richard was all praises for Colin, and Colin had quit at the time. Shame if true. Genuinely loved what Colin brought to the band.

    parent root
    2 points Stompert

    And you’re certain because?

    parent root
    1 points Revanxv

Apparently Colin was a bit of a dick to Richard during the 2010 tour, and allegedly threw out his passport through a bus window.

    parent root
    6 points ArbyLG

Did we ever get confirmation it was those two that were fighting? I know from SW’s book and Colin not being invited back to Porcupine Three that this was the speculation, but I wasn’t sure if it was ever confirmed.

    parent root
    0 points Stompert

    That’s a big yikes.

    parent root
  • 12 points opeth_syndrome

I am 1000% onboard with this.

    parent
  • 12 points zognoc

I wonder how this worked out with SW and the other members of PT.

    parent
    10 points redfm8

It would seem like kind of a ballsy thing to announce without having touched base about it, but who knows. I would think everybody's okay with it if it's gotten this far, I could see the band feeling like there's no harm in letting them go out and get some work since they were excluded from the reunion, shutting it down would probably have been more of a dramatic headache than it's worth.

    parent root
    5 points whiznat

I remember a YT video in which Steven says that he has to be really careful about what he says or someone can take it the wrong way and suddenly the whole world thinks he’s a dick (not related to this topic). But my point is, that unless he has a compelling reason to try to shut it down (and that he’s willing to go public with), he’s probably much better off just letting them do whatever they want to do. He will probably treat them like any other band that covers his music, as long as they pay the royalties, play and let play.

    parent root
    3 points Available_Wait_1965

Bear in mind, he also makes money every time they play a track.

    parent root
  • 11 points JMan9391

So is Wesley going to be the frontman? Seems like the obvious choice, but I am wondering how they will do vocals. Maitland is also an amazing singer.

    parent
    10 points Cyrax89721

Yeah, Wes can clearly handle his own with the vocals. Good example here.

    parent root
    1 points Longjumping-Back-171

Nah - I was at a PT show at the Grove in Anaheim when Wes took the lead vocals for “Even Less”. It was not good. Didn’t fit the song at all. Love his guitar work and his backing vocals, but I shake my head thinking about him fronting a group. In my opinion, they’d do better if they found a lead singer.

Regardless, I’m looking forward to heading anything they’ve got coming.

    parent root
  • 30 points ThinWhiteDuke00

Bit weird naming the band after something which neither Colin or Wes were involved in.

Voyage 34 was recorded when PT was a SW solo act.

    parent
    20 points oceanlessfreediver

Well, I think the message is pretty clear. SW restarting the band without them and without asking them is a tough loss, at the very least a financial one. So they steal SW album name as pay back. #drama

    parent root
    11 points ThinWhiteDuke00

They complain about SW being a creative dictator but their return is solely comprised of music which was even less collaborative than Stupid Dream onwards. 😅

    parent root
    11 points recon364

It's really weird. It's like David Gilmour calling "the wall" to the band without Waters

    parent root
    1 points zappafan89

Yeah that was my thought too. It feels like they basically wanted an excuse to try and monetize Porcupine Tree after the success of the recent reunion but had to scrape around hard enough to find an era that Steve/Gavin/Richard didn't cover already.

    I'll pass.

    parent root
  • 10 points UnityGroover

hope Chris Maitland will be part of this!!!!! woohooo! Will travel for that for sure!

  • 8 points Cyrax89721

Nice to see this being a more diplomatic approach than the mess that bands like Queensryche and Yes went through. Hopefully more like the King Crimson/Beat route of just playing the tunes and having fun.

No idea if there’s any actual hostilities between the groups, but imagine how great it would be for these guys to open for an SW solo show. Best of both worlds!

    parent
  • 5 points holysideburns

Nice! I doubt it will be anywhere near as good as the original band, but I still love that they're doing this.

    parent
  • 5 points bv0198

Doubt it will happen, but would be cool if they only played songs with a Colin Edwin writing credit. Would result in some cool deep cuts getting played like Flicker or Idiot Prayer, plus you still got some crowd pleasers like Halo or Hatesong

This young man never had a bummer
    In some 33 LSD trips
Every one of them was a delight
    Everything under control
He needed only to snap his fingers
And down he came, any time
But on voyage 34, he finally met himself
    Coming down an up staircase
    And the encounter was crushing

    parent root
  • 4 points a_happy_visitor

I believe they should already have Steven’s ok to play his music, right?

    parent
    6 points ArjanGameboyman

    That's not necessary.

You can cover anybody's songs and perform them live. As long as you do the administration right and that band gets their fair share of payment.

Legitimate tribute bands and cover bands do it that way, they dont have to seek permission

    parent root
    3 points a_happy_visitor

Right, pardon my bad English (wrote the comment in a hurry having just read the news): I was more wondering if they had a talk with Steven about this or if they just went for it. Not that it was technically pivotal.

BEAT, for example, has 100% Fripp's approval. It wasn't needed, but it's nice to know.

    parent root
  • 2 points fvalt05

I'm very interested but doubt they tour the States.

    parent
  • 2 points HawterSkhot

Well this is something I didn't realize I needed. Never thought about tribute acts with former members.

    parent
  • 3 points Revanxv

Considering bitter comments from John in reaction to PT reactivation and the fact that Colin has burned quite a few bridges due to his behaviour during 2010 tour... I find this announcement to be quite bizzare.

    parent

Yeah I'm in that camp too. A lot of this sub rides Colin but this would be the equivalent of Martin Lopez and Per Wiberg announcing an Opeth tribute act playing material from Morningrise.
