Are they a fringe political group or do they make up a big part of Finland's current serving politicians? I sure hope it's the former and not the latter.
Also, apologies for asking, but I just wanted to know. Here in America the worst of the worst took over power, so I feel like anything is possible these days.
It’s also important, I think people don’t realize that this type of fascism and racism is on the rise globally - it’s easy to pin it on the US because we are so deeply embarrassing, but it’s happening in so many countries right now
You don't wanna know how Romanians talk about the Roma people. Even my Gen Z friend who is super open and tolerant suddenly started saying the most heinous things about them.
In general, the more rural an area is, the more racist it will be. That goes for every country unfortunately.
I've only been to Europe once, but in my
experience, they are much more racist than the average American. I know Americans can be crude and embarrassing, but there is simply more diversity here, at least in our medium to large cities. There are more opportunities for Americans to interact with different races and cultures. There is still a long way to go, but even in areas that voted for Trump, I found the people there to be much nicer than in Europe. Homogenous countries just don't have the experience that Americans do when it comes to diversity.
I feel like the nordic countries are especially romanticized by americans as some utopian place but it absolutely is not and is full of issues just like anywhere else, ESPECIALLY racism. americans also always seem to think other countries talk about and deal with race issues the same way we do here. and they absolutely do not. it’s a weird very american thing to do to assume our views of these issues are the same elsewhere. it ain’t great!
As a person from the Nordics, it's a bit strange how we are both romanticized and demonized.
Like the way Vikings are fetishized by asshats all over the globe. "See you in Valhalla, brother" (vomit). And the way the current American administration doesn't want immigrants unless they're from Sweden or Norway. Or South Africa.
So the Nordic model of the welfare state is pretty good, all things considered. Universal healthcare, high literacy, good access to education. Proving that it can be done, and it didn't turn the countries into Stalinist communist dystopian hellholes.
And as we can see from those "true Finns" idiots who are doing embarrassing shit in public, we even have freedom of speech.
So yeah the nordic countries are just countries with people being people. Some of whom are racist idiots.
I am an American who emigrated to Sweden almost eight years ago. I love it here, but it is highly xenophobic. It’s not necessarily racist, but definitely xenophobic.
Finland is just straight up racist (obligatory Not All Finns). My friend gets called racial slurs for black people whenever she goes back there to visit family (she left for university.)
had a long relationship with a swede, beautiful country but don’t talk about immigration heh. it opened up my eyes a lot as an american and all the assumptions we love to make. people don’t seem to understand that the way we speak about these issues is not the same everywhere else.
My company has offices in Switzerland. I was talking to a coworker who went over there for work. She said they were very judgmental of appearance in general. Like she was an overweight (not exactly fat but definitely overweight) middle aged white woman and felt very uncomfortable there. She felt you had to meet a pretty high level of attractiveness.
I think we Europeans also need to blame ourselves for this. I see Europeans talk about racism being almost non-existing in Europe all the time on reddit. The myth that some Europeans and Americans of European descent spread on reddit as if in Europe we all walk around naked in our houses all the time as a criticism of American puritanism. It's not all on Americans that they believe it.
Yeah I have a close friend who is in Canada and we were talking about how they got weirdly lucky (I know the word choice is off) that trump immediately started going after Canada because they were this close to electing Trump lite

Compared to its peers in the EU, Finland is among the most racist. While the Finnish education system is one of the best, the ethnic diversity is very low (minorities are basically Swedes lol). Historically, since the fall of the USSR, immigration increased significantly, and now is seeing a right-wing backlash.
So, in my opinion, they intellectually know racism is wrong but have never experienced nor seen racism in action applied to fellow citizens and institutions nor have a history like the US/Britain with slavery and empires. All the same, of course it's vile and we should continue to shame them because they do know better.

My ex saw a black man in the far distance and joked about hiding his watch.

We stopped talking eventually after I put up with way too much abuse in every single kind. He met an east Asian woman just like his friend (they fetishized them a lot) and I learned years later she left her country and is now married to him, has a kid and is being abused by him and his mom but won't leave his side.
Lots of people see these countries as ideal capitalism, but like all capitalist states, capitalism needs 'out groups' to oppress to keep the working class from realizing their true enemy is the capital owning class, not 'out groups'. The top left picture is the now former Miss Finland 2025 who lost her crown due to someone posting the picture in question to social media. The first response from the organization that helds the pageant as well as from Sarah Dzafce herself was such BS. After the public didn't (rightfully) let it go, she had to give up her crown.
Some far right politicians decided to "show their support" by posting pictures of themselves making the same gesture. These same people most likely think that a person with foreign heritage shouldn't be Miss Finland, but hey, a chance to mock minorities... These people are hypocrites.
Our prime minister who is a spineless worm didn't feel like he needs to comment on the matter when people from his government are making asses out of themselves on international news. Which isn't surpising unfortunately considering how much the current goverment sucks in general.
All in all, there are folks who voted for these idiots but there are also us who are embarassed, dissapointed and yet not surprised to see something like this happening. Racism is alive and well even in the "happiest" country in the world and now that there's growing inequality in Finland too it's becoming even louder it seems.

I am Asian and here's one thing I've noticed: many many Europeans still don't know about or don't treat anti-Asian racism seriously. Many are very aware of anti-Black racism, but the same doesn't quite extend for Asians.
I'm in the south in the US but in a purple-ish city. The amount of blatant hate against South East Asians is crazy. They won't make fun of any other race except Asians.

The truth is most Asians genuinely think calling out racism makes them look like victims lol - which is why we don’t do it en masse compared to other minorities. There's definitely truth to that. Our country overall has a strange outlook in that we exist as we are against all expectations. That said, I think that mindset is fading somewhat. We have rising inequality like everyone else, and a lot of the happiness rests on stability that's weakening.
I remember Aotearoa New Zealand ended up on that list at some point as well and I was absolutely baffled because unless you're super wealthy, everyone here is miserable. I really wonder how they come up with those lists, but have never cared enough to investigate lol

The top left picture is the now former Miss Finland 2025 who lost her crown due to someone posting the picture in question to social media. The first response from the organization that helds the pageant as well as from Sarah Dzafce herself was such BS. After the public didn't (rightfully) let it go, she had to give up her crown.
Some far right politicians decided to "show their support" by posting pictures of themselves making the same gesture. These same people most likely think that a person with foreign heritage shouldn't be Miss Finland, but hey, a chance to mock minorities... These people are hypocrites.
Our prime minister who is a spineless worm didn't feel like he needs to comment on the matter when people from his government are making asses out of themselves on international news. Which isn't surpising unfortunately considering how much the current goverment sucks in general.
All in all, there are folks who voted for these idiots but there are also us who are embarassed, dissapointed and yet not surprised to see something like this happening. Racism is alive and well even in the "happiest" country in the world and now that there's growing inequality in Finland too it's becoming even louder it seems.
ETA: Oh and to add to the hypocricy, the bottom left is Sebastian Tynkkynen who has a black male partner. Go figure how he can support the party who wishes people like him and his spouse didn't exist.
Here in Germany, the leader of Afd, a right-wing party, is female and living in an open lesbian relationship. It's pretty bizarre as well.

I am Asian and here's one thing I've noticed: many many Europeans still don't know about or don't treat anti-Asian racism seriously. Many are very aware of anti-Black racism, but the same doesn't quite extend for Asians.

The truth is most Asians genuinely think calling out racism makes them look like victims lol - which is why we don’t do it en masse compared to other minorities. Black people tend to be very openly and brazenly against all anti black racism. I’ve had other Asians excuse the racism we face from white people for some reason.

There's definitely truth to that. Our country overall has a strange outlook in that we exist as we are against all expectations. That said, I think that mindset is fading somewhat. We have rising inequality like everyone else, and a lot of the happiness rests on stability that's weakening.
I remember Aotearoa New Zealand ended up on that list at some point as well and I was absolutely baffled because unless you're super wealthy, everyone here is miserable. I really wonder how they come up with those lists, but have never cared enough to investigate lol
