  • "developing story" - an 86 year old man dying probably doesn't require too much development

It's because they haven't announced his cause of death I think - which, not really a need to know thing IMO.

I really hate this view of death. It's viewed as an anomaly even for elderly to die.

Like he’s gonna come back or something

    It’s not even easter…

Was thinking the same thing. Like, not to be rude about his age, but I can't imagine it's much of a shock or a mystery.

    Right? Not exactly shocking

Hot take, but once you hit like 80 it’s not shocking if someone passes. Sad, yes, but shocking isn’t really a correct description.

  • I mean…he wasn’t Joe Jackson but he wasn’t Joe Jackson, if that makes sense.

    May he rest in peace.

I get that he wasn’t as bad Joe Jackson but what else? Do you mean he wasn’t as successful as Joe Jackson?

What they’re trying to say is man had his problems. He was controlling over Selena Quintanilla and did pull her out of school at a young age even when the school told them not to. He also continued to be controlling over Selena’s image and hated her husband so much they went to court over the estate for years. He wasn’t a saint but Joe Jackson was a worse stage parent by far compared to Abraham Quintanilla that’s what people are trying to say.

Exactly that’s the perfect way to frame him.

  • Wait I’m confused by these comments - he was kinda horrible and abusive no ?? Did I get the story wrong?

He was!!! He wasn’t a nice person.

Can you elaborate on why he was awful? I'm out of the loop.

He was a dick but he’s not some devil folks try to paint him as. He was controlling but folks don’t realize that Selena was only 14-15 years old when she started climbing in the Tejano industry. He had to be controlling to some extent or else she was going to be eaten alive by those labels. And thank God she had her father by her side because for him if it ain’t good for his daughter it wasn’t good for business and I can get down with that.

I think she was much younger than that when he thrust her and siblings to the music business.

I think nowadays he would classed more as a stage parent. The kids were the moneymakers of the family.

They started performing when she was nine at really small events but they didn’t start recording and seriously traveling until she was 14-15. That was around the age she made her first Johnny Canales appearance.

Omg Johnny Canales! “Take it away”. This comment took me baaaack

Stage parents have been called stage parents since forever even in the mid seventies when Selena was a young child Brooke Shields’s mom was called a stage parent by the press. Though there is a difference between a bad stage parent like Luis Miguel’s dad and someone like Abraham Quintanilla.

There’s even a huge difference between Joe Jackson and Abraham Q.

That’s a better comparison I mean dude did have his faults as a parent and he’s definitely polarizing but there are worse stage parents out there.

Definitely. By all accounts, he was a very good father and husband but he was also machismo. Complicated figure and that’s okay, but doesn’t make him a bad person.

I always felt that Selena would have had a somewhat easier time getting successful if she started her career in the 2000’s maybe even later especially for an act from South Texas. Like they wouldn’t have needed to tour the way they did and they may wait to debut her at eighteen but she would have been signed to a major record label way earlier.

He was machista, no machismo. And yes that makes him a bad father and person. I'm like Selena, Mexican American Tejana, so as far as I had life and witnessed being a woman makes you automatically less than men per machistas.

Stage parents existed in 1910s Hollywood and probably 1890s (and much earlier too I’m sure sure) theater worlds. Definitely a (sad) tale as old as time.

Yeah not with the Quintanilla’s but in a lot of cases it’s because the family is poor and the child is the only way they can make an income essentially so they don’t become homeless. It’s for some families a necessary evil.

    [deleted]

It was Suzette who first introduced Yolanda to the family.

I don’t think any member of the family would know how messed up Yolanda would turn out to be.

Ok? What are you implying by even referencing this? Half of this thread makes me fucking sick.  So if you hire an employee based on the merit of resume and daughter word of mouth. He is now connected to an unforeseen murder? Like why even do this. On the day of his death no less.

Bc people just have to constantly have their “gotcha” moment. I’m sure her father felt guilty about that for the rest of his life. That doesn’t mean he’s actually to blame or that anyone needs to pile onto him about it

Exactly!! It seems anytime someone dies now the first comment is "he was an asshole" and the logic is always stupid subjective shit like he was a rude boss, he fired someone or he was an overbearing parent? Really?  He was firm, protective and hard on career and self drive.  A lot of minority parents are. It's not always sunshines and simple living for people who come up the way his family did.  Half the people shitting on him probably grew up with trust fund money and no worries.

I only hope all the people acting like this are lucky enough that someone doesnt point all their shortcomings out on the day of their death. It's so beyond tacky....

It annoys me to … no end. You can’t be a fan of X Celebrity bc they dated Y Celebrity two years ago and Y Celebrity is involved in Political Scandal A

Nobody is perfect and we don’t need to make every single piece of pop culture news into an opportunity to grandstand about something that you perceive yourself to have moral superiority in

lol it’s funny when I hear this narrative. He’s no longer alive so the real story will come out but those in the Latino culture know all about how he tried to pump her out

I don’t rely on conjecture and tabloid rumor. Most in Latino culture aren’t even involved in the Tejano industry and wouldn’t even have a clue. Hell, most in Latino culture don’t even like Tejano music.

So he deserved to die? I’m not sure what the relevance is here…

    Jesus you’re everywhere…

He was pretty controlling of his daughter’s life (and her image after her death) and fans have always hated how he treated Chris Perez. He was a polarizing figure for sure.

    He was controlling for sure

Didn’t he also exclude her husband from the family after her death ?

He very much disliked Chris Perez, I believe.

It was rough in the beginning and at the time Selena passed but they had a good relationship later on .

Most people don’t realize that Chris wasn’t a saint back then and was a little rough around the edges.

The litigation over the rights to her estate went on for YEARS. It wasn’t rough just at the beginning. Abraham was terrified that Chris rightfully owned Selena’s estate and that Abraham would have to go back to actual work after losing his golden goose.

Abraham was WRONG for taking advantage of Chris when he did but the litigation issue they had didn’t come until over 10 years after she had already passed and it’s been close to five years once they resolved those issues. I can always tell when someone doesn’t know anything about the history of Los Dinos or Tejano music itself. Abraham is a pioneer of the industry and Los Dinos don’t reach the heights they reach without his guidance. Also, you wouldn’t know that he was also managing Jennifer Pena and was also doing work with Jay Perez and Grupo Mazz around that same time so it looks like he was still able to find work and do it successfully.

There was no litigation until many years after she died though ( I think starting around 2015 or so and ending a couple years back). And it wasn't really over the rights to her estate either. People make it sound like they've always had unending beef and that's not what happened at all.

    No actually

They've all maintained a relationship over the years (with some bumps in the road) so I don't see how I'm wrong downvoters 😒.

Yes lol these comments are weird. He also constantly profited off her name/death

It was a family business. I’m sure Selena wouldn’t mind them still making money off Los Dinos.

They also don’t know what ppl from the hometown do about them. They aren’t very nice ppl. Waitresses have said here & there even about their tipping practices. I don’t think they give much back to the community, but community funds are used for upkeep of her statue & things like that.

I’ve met the family. Marcela and Suzette are absolutely sweethearts. AB can be okay depending on his mood and for the most part Abraham is a dick - although he is much warmer with children. Suzette since taking over Q Productions has made more of an effort to collaborate with charities and causes that Selena would’ve supported.

I remember this interview she did with Channel 3 way back when they performed at the Memorial Coliseum. She mentioned how it was hard cuz they didn’t have hometown love. They couldn’t get ppl from our hometown to show much support. She spoke a little about it & I always wondered if that’s why they were the way they were also after her death. They’ve stayed in Corpus moving around the same area, buying houses & living super close to each other. I always read comments when an article is posted & someone will share a story when they’ve run into them or the like. I managed to run into AB & the stories I heard him even sharing lol. His dad is the way they perceive him in the movies. Just seems super stressful & I wouldn’t want the notoriety for sure.

I read not too long ago the siblings were trying to make AI Generated music using Selena's voice and painting it as her "living on" like lol give me a break. They probably ran out of money.

Stop being so racist and snarky. ew.

    It's complicated.

He had issues, but his children still loved him. Selena was often the target of her father's micromanaging, but she and him did appear to still be close to the end. His kids do have the final say on if his behavior went too far, and they all seem to have kept relationships going with him. It's also been a very long time since Selena passed, and it's hard to imagine that did not change things for him and the rest of the family as well.

In the end, living this long after one of your children seems like it would be punishment enough for what he's been accused of and then some. No one doubts he loved her, just how he controlled things.

Yea, a lot of these comments are weird.

    Depends whose side you believe

Bingo. He wasn’t like Joe jackson but ain’t no Saint either

He wasn’t nearly as bad but he was a temu version of Joe Jackson to the Quintanilla kids.

I think the movie made us all view him affectionately. One of the better movie dads. I don’t know anything about what he was like irl though.

He sure was. I went to McDonald's many years ago and was trying to order food, but an older man was in front of me yelling at the staff for some reason and making a scene while ordering food. Once he turned I immediately recognized him and said "hey aren't you..." and he cut me off and said "I'm the king" and started walking off. I wanted to tell him that he was a douchbag but while he was walking away a bunch of tall fat guys were walking with him so I'm going to assume he had some kind if security/body guards lol.

the conspiracy is that he put a hit on his own daughter to off her because he was mad Selena married without his permission/consent and Selena was his cash cow at the time.

That he coerced Yolanda to off his own daughter, and latino culture especially the central american culture im from ranks high on the femicide rate.

  • I'll always say that Mr. Quintanilla tenia sangre pesada but was also his daughter's biggest fan.

I feel people forget Selena was only 20 when she eloped and 23 when she passed.

She was a force to be reckoned with, but she loved her (micromanaging) overprotective dad.

I do not like this man. He may have loved her, but he loved exploiting her even after her death and loved the money she made him.

    I'm not sorry he's dead.

This comment was what made me realize we weren't talking about Selena Gomez

Edit: holy shit, you guys. I thought I was sharing a funny brain fart. I don't understand all the downvotes. What the hell?

There's only one Selena that is not necessary to use her last name.

Yeah as soon as I realized I was like "Omg, I'm an idiot." I thought that was pretty clear from my comment.

Who’s that? Is she related to Selena?

Lol. Can you imagine if people were related based on first name and not last name?

  • I watched the documentary on Netflix and it broke my heart. I don’t really believe in religion or whatever but i like to believe she isn’t alone wherever she is.

That’s a really special way to phrase it, thank you

  • I hated how he and the family treat Chris, who genuinely loved and still loved Selena. But, Selena also loved her dad. Rest in peace, I hope he and Selena find each other.

Off topic but I just wanted to reply but I recognize you lmao, I see you in many pop culture and marvel subs and wanted to say hi! I love so many of your takes and comments <3

  • 86 is a hell of a good run....and I actually thought he was at least a decade younger. RIP.

  • Me and all my homies hate Yolanda Saldivar.

My dad was Yolanda's sister in house doctor at the time of the murder.

They had to have cops lined up at her sister's place bc folks were straight up ready to go after anyone.

Once my dad was there the sister wouldn't stfu about Yolanda being innocent / frame etc.

My dad said he almost pierced his tongue from trying to stay silent.

    The whole family is trash.

  • He was a strict Jehovah Witness Latino dad born in 1939. Shocker. Selena still loved him and trusted him It’s weird when people have this hardcore hatred of him and the family because of crackpot theories.

Like the denial of blood transfusions story that people still believe. By the time the family got to the hospital she had multiple and still couldn’t saved.

Tbh if her family never did anything with her image/music after her death and let it wither away like some of y’all want. I don’t think her legacy would have grown as big as it is today. They only authorized the 1997 movie because literally immediately after her death studios were already putting together unauthorized movies etc.

They pretend to know Selena’s family more than Selena herself. It’s weird

Yeah it's absolutely no one's place to dictate her feelings towards him. People have issues fr.

Did the kids grow up JW? I never heard that about her dad before but that makes a lot of sense.

    They were raised JW

  • If there's such a thing, I hope they're together again.

    [deleted]

Because despite his flaws, his daughter Selena still loved him? It seems like Selena’s family and Chris have a good enough relationship NOW if they were able to do a documentary together.

She was a child star for a majority of her fame. He was controlling because he didn’t want her to be taken advantage of. Like loving parents are supposed to do.

And being a child star is a horrible thing. Look at how many past child stars were utterly destroyed by the experience. I would think a good parent would avoid that for their child.

Selena was actually one of the few child stars with a good head on her shoulders and her tight knit family can take a lot of credit for that. Two things can be true, Abraham was controlling but he was still a good father. And if you know anything about Selena you would know she was never 100% under his control. Selena always pushed back and got what she wanted. Abraham never wanted Selena to have a fashion line she did it anyway, he didn’t want her to marry Chris.. she did it anyway and lastly he wanted to control her appearance and she wasn’t having that either! Selena was asserting her dominance more and more everyday.

He did what he felt was best for his family. He wasn’t a perfect man but he was not evil. Selena was a child entertainer but at least she was with family and not on her own…

Nobody has a perfect relationship with their parents but they loved each other.

  • Developing story? Do they expect him to come back?

I guess every article now is to assume there’s foul play whenever there is a death….to an 86 year old man -.-

Well, no matter the given situation every age and at an advanced age there's always a cause of death even if it isn't immediately discovered and its not because of "Old age." And Yeah, I get your reasoning for not needing to specify.

  • He was a pushy selfish man, but I do know Selena loved him. Hope they can find each other out there

  • I hope Selena gave him the BIGGEST hug when they reunited

EDIT: Apparently I need to learn more on my Selena History based on the comments below, so I retract my above statement.

No you don’t need to retract that statement. Selena’s dad was overprotective because the music industry is cutthroat. How many artists do we know of that were taken advantage of by lions in this industry? Dad had to protect them. They all love him to this day. Was he imperfect? Of course he was. He lived in the public eye. The Spanish language media that demonize him is the same one that give Selena’s cold blooded sociopathic killer a platform every year on the anniversary of Selena’s murder. They give her a chance to spew her lies. It’s sick.

R.I.P. Abraham Quintanilla. May you be at peace with your beloved daughter. Please tell her how much we love her. 💐💐

Without his efforts Selena would probably not have as big of a fanbase thirty years after her murder because people forget like that.

    Let’s hope not.

He will probably exploit her and control her even in the afterlife

You guys are acting like Selena didn’t love her dad at the end of the day. I’m sure he loved her too, despite his controlling nature. He’s a polarizing figure for sure, but he wasn’t some sociopath who didn’t love his children.

And we need to remember who the real villain/murderer was. She's the one that needs to go away and rot.

    Let's learn about nuance mama

  • Oh wow! I was just wondering about him after reading about her documentary! Even though I didn’t like the way he did Chris.

  • He lived long enough to be a part of Selena’s documentary, and I hope he’s now with his baby girl, singing Tejano music together.

  • That Yolanda Salvadar won’t stop until the whole family is dead!

  • So when my dad was younger he looked exactly like Selena’s dad in the movie. I can’t think of Abraham without thinking of my own father.

I don’t know much about the man but I’m glad he’s reunited with his daughter

  • I'd love to know how much that family has made off her legacy since she passed. There's been so many projects about her and that whole family has been interviewed about her hundreds of times. The Netflix series and doc felt unnecessary because there's nothing more that hasn't been told by them. At that point it feels like they're just milking the name.

I expect Jenni Rivera's family to do the same even though they've already done a lot. She still hasn't had the full Bio-series to give the rub to an aspiring Latina actress.

Can we ask the question for other famous people who were killed and their surviving families? Probably not as much as the Tupac or Biggie estates/family. Would we say Nipsey hussel brother is also milking his name or would we say he is cementing his legacy and name? I was trying to think of famous people from the 90s who’s legacy is still strong. Nipsey’s burgers came to mind so I included him (but for most of us only know him after his passing)

I see a lot of comments questioning the Quintanilla family and not others. (No I’m not defending him or a fan of him) I am curious why we are disgusted by Selena’s family “making money “ but we don’t feel the same for others.

This! Because Michael Jackson’s family always using him! (Except Janet). Just last week they announced that they’re building a whole museum dedicated to Michael and they have another movie about him coming out.

i’m from texas and it’s been known he wasn’t a nice person to anyone. aside from being able to bank on her legacy, abraham used that money to pay for his son’s legal troubles and lawyers bc AB jr was caught being a deadbeat dad and taken to court, on top of DUI’s and assault charges.

AB III has had his own money for years. Let’s not act like the Kumbia Kings and his production work weren’t giants for several years all on his own. Did the dad help clean up his mess? Of course he did. He’s the father. Doesn’t mean they robbed Selena.

Put that on the killer that was actually convicted of a crime due to money (she had access to all of Selena’s credit cards and would buy stuff for her family). She’s the one that was accused of stealing from her previous employer and tried to do the same to Shelly lares.

I know there’s plenty of family who drain their own children’s pockets. This ain’t it.

The hard work of the Quintanilla family has ensured that Selena’s legacy is still alive and has already two generations that love her for her apart from her talents decades after she’s no longer physically here. If not for them, what of it?

We can say this about multiple celebs who've since departed that their family have milked the celeb's career for all their worth insisting it was for their "legacy" when in reality they want the nepo money because they have no career of their own.😒

Because people just want to talk. If I was Selena, I'd be all about having my family "profit" after my death, or make money off my music, if it meant they were taken care of AND people were listening to my music. My whole family.

It's probably hard for a lot of Redditors to understand that some people actually have families that are close even if they're problematic, but there it is. Some of the comments in here make me laugh. This is a subreddit that constantly defends cultures around the world, but is apparently unable to give some grace to the one Selena came from.

Jenni Rivera has had a couple they have just been terribly made. Estrella TV did a terrible bio series on her.

There’s an article I read after the Netflix that documented the legal battle Chris had with this jerk over his rightful ownership of HIS WIFE’s estate.

In the end the settlement was such that the entire Quintanilla family was easily supported by Selena until their eventual deaths. Abraham making millions a year off of his daughter’s legacy into his last breath.

They already did a full bio-series on her! Mariposa del Barrio. It was really good, I loved it.

I notice this in Latino artists, they feel obligated to make a biopic as soon as the artist passes away

  • Wow. Now he can sing in heaven w his baby 🩷🫶🏾

  • Why do I feel like Selena was a prominent part of my schooling in elementary school?

  • He outlived his child by so much that must have been hard.

  • You’re mine… and we belong together.. for eternity ❤️ 🎵 RIP Mr. Quintanilla

  • HER SOUL CAN FINALLY REST!!!

He was always quick to secure his livelihood. It is standard estate pritection, I supoose, but something about AB made hom seem overly possessive. Apparently after this, Chris and the family reached a deal, and are playing nice now because they both realized the fandom demands that anything Selena should include her husband. The family never produced anything of significance after Selena. All the acts they produced/created either folded, or never made an impact.
It helps that hardcore Selena's fans are always hungry to gey anything relates to her. The stories are always the same; the songs are just remastered, or rebranded in some way.

AB started the Kumbia Kingz after Selena passed and at one point they were the biggest Tejano act. Q Productions also produced Jay Perez’s “Up Close and Personal” album along with Jennifer Pena when she was a teenager charting.

AB is a bridge burner. No one has heard of those acts.

YOU haven’t heard of those acts. Jay Perez is one of the greatest Tejano artists to ever live and Jennifer Pena was a superstar before she went on a hiatus.

I'll take your word for it.

  • We should be mourning WITH her but…

  • I didn't like the way he capitalized on his daughter's murder. No offense to anyone who loved Selena's music (myself included), but it wasn't mainstream or popular and it only became so as a result of the horrible and tragic way her life was cut short; my friends and I would listen to Selena's cassettes until the things fell apart.

After watching all the interviews, the movie, documentaries, etc, it's really heartbreaking how the Quintanillas' lives came to a full stop and turned upside down in the blink of an eye. There was no closure or a proper goodbye. The star of the show was gone just like that.

I guess any parent would want to see their child's memory live on through others. If there is an afterlife, I hope he is again reunited with his daughter after so many years.

A counterpoint: After she died, all these projects started popping up over which they had no control. He didn’t want to have to start working on an authorized project just weeks after she died but he felt the family had to control the narrative and refute rumors and all of that.

However, since everything happened so quickly, Chris Perez was given a raw deal. He signed away 75% of the profits of her estate because he was in no position to know or even consider his rights and didn’t have the clarity to consult an attorney. Since she died without a will, he legally could have and should have controlled everything as her heir.

  • [deleted]

I’m not a fan of him but this is a myth. Selena would’ve still died with or without a blood donation

I think this was a rumor. He was trash regardless.

Wait, the comment is deleted. What did they say?

    let it go

What? Let go of what? I’m confused. I just wanted to know what was said. I never saw the comment.

That she was denied a blood transfusion bc of her religion. It false though. People blamed Abraham. If you google there are lots of articles :(

Thanks for telling me! Christ, that’s a terrible rumour to spread. The guy lost his daughter in a brutal way and they’re just making up sick stuff like that?

exactly. let it go. it’s deleted because it’s misinformation. putting it back up is putting misinformation.

I obviously don’t support misinformation and spreading. I literally was just curious. Sorry.

  • May he finally be able to hug her again 🫶

  • This is crazy omg, I was just getting back into my Selena obsession just a couple days ago! I was reading Chris Perez' book and this happens just a couple days later, this is wild omg

Reading the book, he was very controlling of Selena. RIP but not a balanced father from what Chris delved into the book. He constantly had to prove himself to him to date her and her father literally hated the fact they were dating, and Chris is a good guy from what i gather.

As a latina I think it's just the standard controlling latino father thing, they were Jehovah witnessess too so he was extremely conservative and very protective of Selena, esp in the music industry. I don't think he was a horrible person, but he never learnt to find the balance of protecting her and straining their relationship.

  • Is he involved with her daughter's death?

  • regardless of anything, may he rest in peace, and finally be with his daughter again.

  • Where’s Yolanda…?

    Rotting in prison.

  • Why does this matter?

  • I happy the truth of a lot of things are going to come out now about Selena and her family. Now that he is gone and can not block it

  • Some of you never had a Dad who poured into you heavily and it shows!

  • Who gives a shite? I will see myself out.

  • Another dead toxic boomer

  • This is Mexican John Goodman
