A group of 5-15 players sits in a circle and one is a narrator. Most people are innocent but a small few wake up during a night phase and attack a player. During the day phase people vote out who they think is the killers

Both
Town of Salem?
I know it as Mafia in English, but in my country we call it "Lupus in fabula" ("wolf in the tale" or something like that)
are you Italian?
Yup
anch'io
Blood on the Clocktower
So much better than both mafia and werevolves.
Aren't role cards involved in Werewolf?
There's different versions, for me it's Mafia but if we play with cards then it's Werewolf or 狼人杀 ("the werewolf kills")
First introduction was 20 years ago as Mafia, but I've heard it commonly by both.
Lupus in Tabula (Italy)
it means "wolf on the table" and it's a pun with "lupus in fabula" (which is a phrase with a similar meaning of "speak of the devil")
Town of Palermo
It has many names and modifiers
I call it Mafia. Never heard Werewolf before.
Depends on the version
Never heard of this game, but I've also been out of high school for 30 years, so that might explain it.
Town of Salem
Honestly I've never heard of this game before. The only game I've played as a kid that is the closest thing I can think of is called "Heads Up 7 Up"
But yeah, most games I played as a kid were games like Duck-Duck-Goose Red Light, Green Light.
I call it Mafia only because of YouTuber TheAMaazing's series where he has his animation community friends play. Werewolf makes more sense though.
I've heard it as "mafia" in English but in my native language (Greek) it's "(the night falls in) Palermo" for some reason
