Over the last ten years, we've all witnessed the same thing countless times: A Republican friend or random internet user, voter on the news, etc etc, will proclaim their sudden disgust for Trump based on one of any number of recent shocking news revelations. "I'm done," they say. And then a year later... they're so far back up Trump's digestive tract that they actually appear more unapologetically pro-Trump than ever before.
What's going on? Usually it's one of two things:
Scenario 1: They are straight up just lying to us at the time they express disagreement with something Trump recently did or said.

He never once gave my wife or me a hint of Trump-supporting ideology, and we always interpreted that to mean that he was either too ashamed to help Republicans when Trump was on the ballot... or too ashamed to tell us that he had voted for Trump.
This is often a subconscious behavior that they aren't even trying to manifest on purpose. Trump voters are by now notorious for their tendency to under-report their true feelings on Trump when responding to anonymous phone polls. Maybe they are skeptical of the promise of anonymity, or maybe their aversion to ridicule is so powerful that they subconsciously avoid disclosing their support for Trump to any strangers.
Scenario 2: The Trump voters who genuinely do lessen their support during periods of intense scandal but rebound later after finding comfort in a perceived renewal of popular support. A lot of them sincerely thought on January 7, 2021 that Trump had to go, but by November 2022 they have been convinced by the bot armies on Twitter, their friends at work, and the talk radio infotainment machine that Biden is an even worse president because of any pick of issues like his Covid funding aid giveaways, his mishandling of the Afghan pullout, or an inept response to Ukraine.
Both of these psychological processes are going on with millions of Trump supporters every day, for a host of different reasons both personal and external. And that's just for real people. A ton of the content you see from Trump supporters who appear to be "abandoning support" are actually just pro-Trump bot far accounts or propaganda artist influencers partaking in a carefully crafted social-engineering dance to give the false image of reasonability to Trump's base.

In short, they only respect "authorities" on any subject, and only members of their in-group can even be authorities.
