I mean, he was in a parental position for Larvitar, and a lot of his other Pokémon. He has a responsibility to ensure their safety as their trainer, but they don’t necessarily have the same responsibility back. That isn’t to say they wouldn’t save him, but that to him, it’s two different things entirely
