Went on a rabbit hole checking how heavy steelix is. Steelix is too light to even exist. Its hollow with skin thsts less than a mm thick. Its an aluminum foil snake.
Yes... if you want a literal whale to float like a plank of wood, that is. Not like that means anything for Wailord since it would just start floating ABOVE the water since it is less dense than air anyway tbh
aquatic creatures usually need to submerge to hunt and do aquatic things. Unless you're talking about waterfowl which aren't like aquatic in the sense they live in the water full time
I genuinely think that the whole Pokedex weight/height system was added as an afterthought. I heard it described one time as "John Intern's flavor text," and I couldn't agree more.
This is canonically false. There is an official infographic explaining how dex entires are made, and they're the result of extensive research and multiple tests carried out by Pokemon researchers and professors.
You're right. I approach it by saying pokemon that are based on small real life animals like the regional birds are bigger and heavier than theier real life counterparts and mons that are based on big real life animals like elephants, rhinos and hippos are lighter and smaller than theier counterparts. That somehow works for me.
I love the Mudsdale fact. Its weight is fully accurate to the animal it is based on, and it is 80 kilos short of being the heaviest Pokemon in the series. Goes to show how inaccurate everything else of similar or larger size is.
Incidentally, not a single Pokémon weighs more than 1000 kilo/2204 lbs, so Steelix and Wailord would still be comically light even if they topped the weight chart.
It's cool to see how the devs wanted to have some fun for the SM/USUM weight chart, we got two mons that hit both the min and max possible weight, and they evolve from one another! And then two other mons that do the same, while being UB counterparts.
Not only that but it was the first time ever Groudon got surpassed in weight by something other than itself.
30’ long but only 800 pounds. That’s only like 5 humans’ weight, yet it’s a massive snake made of steel?? and mega steelix only grows 4’ but is twice the weight??
That's why i always assume that bird pokemon are much lighter than the dex says and that ones like steelix or hippowdon are at least three times heavier than shown
Seriously half of the birds wouldn't even be getting off the ground with how heavy they are
Mega Staraptor having 4 moveslot syndrome versus Mega Pidgeot having to choose between Uproar and Hyper Beam for second STAB, and not having coverage beyond Heat Wave.
Meanwhile Swellow and Toucannon boomburst while being physically oriented.
I have the problem that recoil moves are either overkill or they actually hit at full force onto a boss and the recoil is enough to KO me. For the big birb I run sky attack because it’s funny to assert dominance before hitting for a billion damage.
Source: me attempting to bring down Rayquaza with Mega Aggron/Floette with stone head/light of ruin.
In fairness, boomburst on swellow is a good move given that it has access to scrappy, making it highly spammable. The 140 base power 100 accurate move has no drawbacks save for certain mons with soundproof that have a guaranteed immunity to it is legitimately good.
Choice Specs Swellow was legitimately a top-tier threat back in Gen 6 NU and Gen 7 RU. Sure, that's not exactly the big leagues, but for a mon with a whopping 50 base special attack to have literally any form of viability as a special attacker is pretty impressive. Fast STAB Scrappy Boomburst is just that strong.
As happy as I am Staraptor got a Mega, man I’m disappointed Talonflame didn’t get one. He was one of my top three most wanted Megas for gen 6 alongside the fossils… and of course none of them got anything.
I love the mental image of Mega Staraptor flying at full speed, losing it's grip on a Steelix and the Steelix plummeting into someone's house fully extended like a rotating ICBM
Nowhere in the Pokédex does it say that Mega Pidgeot can carry a Steelix, much less carry a Pokémon with those stupid claws.
Corviknight has more stamina to be able to carry people in Galar, Saying that Staraptor is unimpressive is the same as saying "I'm so stupid, uhhh, because others do it and it's bad, uhhh."
I never said the pokedex did ,don't put words in my mouth and get out of your feelings. I say it was NOT THAT impressive, because it gains the ability to carry steelix(Who is actually not that heavy)after mega evolution ,while Corviknight carries people inside cars as a regular Pokemon. Work on your analogies,it was just as bad as your comprehension.
Would be extremely impressive if Steelix wasn't impossibly lightweight. (Which is still fun because pokemon don't weight as much but can easily Carry, Push and Pull large ammounts of weight).
Went on a rabbit hole checking how heavy steelix is. Steelix is too light to even exist. Its hollow with skin thsts less than a mm thick. Its an aluminum foil snake.
That explains its attack stat
Pokemon weights are fucked
Metagross weights heavier than steelix, especially mega metagross, which it levitates btw.
I mean, have you seen Cosmoem?
Wailord is literally less dense than air
TIL Wailord floating in the air like a blimp is the most accurate thing about it.
No it isn't, it's almost twice as dense.
Tbf it's aquatic
Which is even worse
Should have made it flying type forever ago
That would require it to be more dense, not less
Wouldn't it have to be less dense than water to float on it?
Yes... if you want a literal whale to float like a plank of wood, that is. Not like that means anything for Wailord since it would just start floating ABOVE the water since it is less dense than air anyway tbh
Wailord living 15 miles in the sky is canon
aquatic creatures usually need to submerge to hunt and do aquatic things. Unless you're talking about waterfowl which aren't like aquatic in the sense they live in the water full time
Oh! Looks like I was mistaken then... Thanks!
Funnily enough, I recently saw someone point out that Mega Floette somehow has the density of a neutron star.
Isn't that because it's like nearly a black hole or something? I forget the specifics, but I thought that it made sense for that one specifically
Metagross is alive and levitating out of spite. The machine wanted to be a living thing
I genuinely think that the whole Pokedex weight/height system was added as an afterthought. I heard it described one time as "John Intern's flavor text," and I couldn't agree more.
I mean canonically it’s filled with data collected by children. Same reason you end up with stuff like Magcargo’s body temp being as hot as the sun.
This is canonically false. There is an official infographic explaining how dex entires are made, and they're the result of extensive research and multiple tests carried out by Pokemon researchers and professors.
Here it is
I mean those researchers still use children to collect data. In basically every game you get a Pokédex to help the professors with their research.
You're right. I approach it by saying pokemon that are based on small real life animals like the regional birds are bigger and heavier than theier real life counterparts and mons that are based on big real life animals like elephants, rhinos and hippos are lighter and smaller than theier counterparts. That somehow works for me.
Applies to most big Pokémon.
Wailord, Dondozo, Celesteela, Dialga...
Conversely, Mudsdale is horse size and yet weighs as much as the horse breed it's based on, so more than two Steelix.
I love the Mudsdale fact. Its weight is fully accurate to the animal it is based on, and it is 80 kilos short of being the heaviest Pokemon in the series. Goes to show how inaccurate everything else of similar or larger size is.

Wailord is ar leasr a blimp....
It's lighter than cotton. I guess one dip into water would collapse it.
I guess using a metal coat as an evo item makes sense, it just gives it a small metal covering
30’ long but only 800 pounds. That’s only like 5 humans’ weight, yet it’s a massive snake made of steel?? and mega steelix only grows 4’ but is twice the weight??
that explains how steelix floats. i assumed it was like how aquatic pokemon have to levitate on land, but no. steelix legit can just fly.
I guess that explains why it moves at the speed of sound in New Pokemon Snap…
That's why i always assume that bird pokemon are much lighter than the dex says and that ones like steelix or hippowdon are at least three times heavier than shown
Seriously half of the birds wouldn't even be getting off the ground with how heavy they are
he literally wears a metal coat, bro lmao.
When there is an in game mechanic that uses weight to determine the power of a move it kinda fucks with statistics like this for balancing
Mega Staraptor having 4 moveslot syndrome versus Mega Pidgeot having to choose between Uproar and Hyper Beam for second STAB, and not having coverage beyond Heat Wave.
Meanwhile Swellow and Toucannon boomburst while being physically oriented.
Fck it we BRAVE BIRD
Pokémon X was my second pokemon game ever, and kid me would just spam Blaziken Brave Bird.
You got the Torchic mystery gift?
I have the problem that recoil moves are either overkill or they actually hit at full force onto a boss and the recoil is enough to KO me. For the big birb I run sky attack because it’s funny to assert dominance before hitting for a billion damage.

Bureivu Birido!

STAB Boomburst is always a good move.
Also hits your other pokemon in vgc but that's not a dealbreaker outright
Especially since abilities like telepathy or soundproof on your side would allow you to not worry about it.
Also it's just like never used in VGC tbh (please game freak buff swellow)

I can’t believe they didn’t give Pidegeot Focus Blast yet…
Blizzard would be incredibly on point for the wind based No Guard special attacker.
I wonder how long will it take for Mega Toucannon to exist.
Really hope it becomes a railgun.
They do really just look like Super Sayian 2 and 3
Maybe Staraptor is SSJ 4.
Both have cool hair
Mega staraptor just became even more of a JoJo
I just got mine and he's awesome, I'm still salty talonflame didn't get one though.
Mega Unfezant when?
When that Pokemon is remembered by more than 20 people.
Meanie :(
what the community truly needs (seriously I want it)
Would it have two different mega appearances for its male/female counterparts?
The explicitly stated precedent is no, but explaining more is spoilers
It would probably combine characteristics of both. A non-binary mega if you will
I always confuse Unfezant with the S/V legendary bird whose name I forgot
Serendipity? Something like that? Idk I stopped playing after Gen 7 so I’m fuzzy on 8 and 9
Daniel Vs The cooler Daniel
As happy as I am Staraptor got a Mega, man I’m disappointed Talonflame didn’t get one. He was one of my top three most wanted Megas for gen 6 alongside the fossils… and of course none of them got anything.
I love the mental image of Mega Staraptor flying at full speed, losing it's grip on a Steelix and the Steelix plummeting into someone's house fully extended like a rotating ICBM
Now I'm just picturing a world where Mega Staraptors drop Electrodes on top of armies during conflicts.
Now mega talonflame.
Pidgeot would need to stay Mega Evolved for two weeks to test that.
Pretty sure Mega P can do that too . Hell ,Corviknight is shown carrying ppl in cars . You're not very impressive Mega Staraptor . Sorry
Nowhere in the Pokédex does it say that Mega Pidgeot can carry a Steelix, much less carry a Pokémon with those stupid claws.

I feel like it would've looked better with its regular eyes. Now it looks more like a dark type than a fighting
Well, mega pidgeot can 0ko mega staraptor easily
Mega Starator's defenses are pretty ok actually, it's 85/100/90
Super effective stab Huracaine says hello 🙋
I forgot it turned into a fighting type lol
Mega Staraptor: Do you even lift bro?
Talonflame my bro is left behind😢
Im still sticking with my boy Pidgeot ❤️🩹
What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen Staraptor?
What do you mean? An African or a European Staraptor?
Well lumiose is fantasy Paris, so european
Best Mega for the best bird
Mega Corviknight will exist some day...
Bet mega staraptor still won’t be able to use Sky Drop against Steelix
Mega Pigeot acting like it can be mega for more than a minute
the early bird gets the metal worm
Talons*
Would be extremely impressive if Steelix wasn't impossibly lightweight. (Which is still fun because pokemon don't weight as much but can easily Carry, Push and Pull large ammounts of weight).
The best name I could think of for my Mega Starapter was Pete Windz, since I can't use the @ for Poké@DaDisco.
To be fair that is crazy stamina. Imagine jogging for 2 weeks with no break.
The design of Mega Staraptor looks so awesome
