What’s new in v3
🎮 Triggers
The most consistent feedback on v1 and v2 was trigger reliability. While they technically "worked", they didn't feel great, and you had to fiddle with it to make sure the faceplate was exactly where it needed to be. these issues have been solved.
v3 introduces:
- Rubber-band counterforce for consistent return
- Stretch-fit screen contacts that lock into the case more securely
Together, they make the L/R triggers far more dependable than previous versions.
🔴 Materials & membranes
I tested multiple TPU hardnesses and landed on a fully printed TPU membrane that honestly exceeded my expectations. The feel and consistency are better than anything I thought I could get from FDM printing.
🟢 Smarter builds
v3 uses a mix of PETG and TPU, along with refined print techniques, to better balance rigidity, flex, snap-fit strength, and long-term durability.
FDM printing creates small, wearable components, and a lot of people asked for spares. Every v3 faceplate includes replacement pads, buttons, triggers, and bands so your PlayCase lasts longer and is easier to maintain.
A huge thank you to ManicEMU ❤️
I also want to give a massive thank-you to the ManicEMU team for believing in this project and actively integrating PlayCase support into their platform as of version 1.8.1!
Seeing features land in ManicEMU that directly support PlayCase — from UI considerations to performance improvements — has been incredibly motivating. That kind of developer support makes a huge difference for a physical accessory like this, and it means a lot to me as a creator.
If you’re using PlayCase and haven’t checked out ManicEMU yet, you absolutely should.
What's next? Nintendo DS plate update 📟
For those of you who love the idea, but aren't ready yet - The DS faceplate is actively in progress and on its way.
It’s being designed and tested alongside v3 improvements, and I’ll share updates (and photos) as it gets closer to release.
Skin editor update 🎨
I’ve also shipped a new version of the PlayCase skin editor for anyone who likes customizing layouts or building their own skins.
It’s faster, more flexible, and makes it easier to design and export skins for different devices and layouts.
You can check it out here:
https://editor.playcase.gg
If you build something cool, I’d love to see it.
Want to help spread the word?
PlayCase is still very much a small, single-person-led project, and I could genuinely use some help getting the word out.
If you enjoy making content — photos, short videos, gameplay clips, or even just writing about retro games — and you’re interested in creating content around PlayCase, I can compensate you for your work.
I’m keeping details and coordination inside the Discord.
If that sounds interesting, jump in and check the pinned info there.
And lastly - THANK YOU!!
PlayCase project started as an idea I had back in 2007 when I was 15 and holding my first iPhone, wishing it felt more like a Game Boy. It lived in my head for nearly 18 years before modern tools — and a lot of sweat equity — made it real.
I’m so proud of where PlayCase is today, and I’m incredibly grateful for this community. v3 feels like a real turning point.
If you’ve used v1 or v2, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
And if you’re new — welcome. I’m glad you’re here.
