Hey guys. I’m not sure what exactly I’m here to say.

Located in South hills.

I’m 24 m and from Pittsburgh. I’ve hardly been out.

Since August I’ve been unemployed and I cannot for the life of me find a normal job that isn’t fast food. I’m behind in every single bill I have, My vehicle blew up, and I can’t even afford to eat.

I’ve had interviews but am having issues where they feel I won’t be dependable because my car is messed up. Which is crazy they think someone can’t be dependable on public transportation.

I’m really ready to give up. I’ve been able to do just a few jobs on Craigslist and that has gotten me to a good bank but I have no idea what to do in this city. And I’ve put in litterly 100s of applications. I’m baffled. I’m so burnt out.

I’ve been in and out of the foster care system so family isn’t an option unfortunately and again, I am so burnt out.

Im sure I could have worded this all a bit better but I’m trying. Does anyone know any services or programs that can help me? I don’t have issues with drugs or being a good employee at all. If anything I’m super dedicated to doing good work. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

  • I’ll give you a shot if you want to work at Pittsburgh Pottery. Our new location is in Bridgeville super close to a bus stop. You can start today if you want! DM me (we actually pay pretty well)

*immediately orders mug because this reply was so generous

He hired me! He’s an amazing guy! I mean really blew my mind. I’m so happy I held in there.

Your first task is to make a "worlds best boss" mug as a gift.

so happy to see this, wishing you so well 🫶🏻🩵

This is the best thing I may have seen on Reddit! I live in Bridgeville, and will definitely be supporting your business!

Wow! Super generous! I hope I find someone like you if I’m ever in a bad spot. Refreshing to read.

I’m not interested in pottery as a hobby, but it’s definitely on my list to come patronize your establishment. It’s amazing to see the community lift up our neighbors who ask for help. This is absolute class.

Okayyy Pittsburgh Pottery, I wasn’t familiar with your game!

this is so kind of you

How kind of you! May you be blessed 10 fold! Question, is pottery the same thing as ceramics? Like can I go there and make a vase or something?

Aw thanks. Yes we do pottery classes and make and sell pottery in our gallery and at places like 3 Rivers Arts Fest and Picklesburgh.

Ahh thanks so much. I've always wanted to do ceramic and make something! I'd love to check it out and so happy to support someone who is kind and helpful to a young person trying their best. A win for humanity🙌🏼💙

Love this, I hope OP sees!

Ohhhh I didnt know you had a location out there. I will have to visit :)

Thanks! We hope to open in Bridgeville by summer, but in the meantime we are open in Carnegie. We are getting the building in Bridgeville ready. It’s the old Italian Club and it’s huge!

Yes I second all this and in talks with this redditor. I think this is amazing aswell.

I feel like this would be a great opportunity op for sure. Pottery is amazing and really teaches you a lot I've only done it a little but it's been a very zen and humbling experience. Wish you the best and I hope this works out. ♥️

Hell yes, love you guys! The bluegill mug I bought years ago for my dad is still in use today.

have one of your mugs & absolutely love it but about to get so many more because - I love this so much. thank you ❤️

I am going to come by and spend some money in your establishment...

    This is so kind

That is very kind! Glad to see people doing good! A fellow Bridgeville worker!

Just checked out your website. I know what I’m doing when my daughter visits next month!

Just chiming in to say that Pittsburgh Pottery is legit a good dude! I love ane am not surprised he made this offer at all.

These guys are the real deal. We’re sorry they’re leaving Carnegie, but glad they found a better space in Bridgeville. And they’re good guys who make a terrific product. Can’t say enough good - you’d do well to get a job there!

i’m coming to pittsburgh pottery now

    Seriously, you are an angel.

Well now I’m definitely checking out your organization. I’ve wanted to learn to throw pots!!!

Love this & proud to be a Pittsburgh Pottery student.

Still awesome humans out here. I’m so glad for you and I’m so thankful for your new start

For anyone looking at this - we took a class from you around Halloween and it was fantastic! We made pumpkins. Great establishment, and this is such a cool response from you.

This deserves press. You're an amazing person

Safe to say you’ve just scored yourself quite a lot of business. Thank you for being awesome.

    You are a godsend!

  • Hey, don’t worry, it’ll get better. 🩷

This organization, The Door, is great. Helped somebody I know A LOT when they hit rough times. It is based in NYC, but you should call them — they will be able to help you find some help in Pittsburgh, I’m sure. You’re their top eligible age (24), and they also have a speciality in former foster kids.

    Foster kids info: https://www.door.org/fostercare/

    General page: https://www.door.org/

You’re amazing, thank you so much.

If for some reason you can’t reach them over the next couple days, DM me, and I’ll put you in touch with my friend.

    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please check out my comment below about Bidwell Training Center!!! They are amazing, they have completely saved my life and put me on the right path, and I haven't even graduated yet. Something to consider!!

Also check out Job corps located by the old shuman, they have training programs for carpentry, mechanic, associate degrees and even dorms for you to live in with a cafeteria. I believe they accept people until 25 or 26. It is a great way to get on your feet with training and normally have subsidies for you that increase during your time in the program.

Also Bidwell Training Center!!! Totally free for Allegheny County residents. I'm doing Chem Lab Tech right now, and I've never taken a single chem class and used to suck at math, but I'm taking it day by day, and have a 3.6 GPA at the end of my first quarter!!! The program is amazing, AND they set you up with job placement at the end of the program, AND! they have TONS of resources for students, helping them sign up for Medicaid, housing assistance, SNAP/EBT, they have a food pantry, and they even do clothing programs if you don't have professional clothes!!!

eta: I'm 28!!! Got my GED middle of 2025 just to attend Bidwell. Best decision of my life. I thought my life was over too. On disability the past two years, credit is shot, living with my partner's parents, a whole bunch of obstacles in my way. Bidwell is giving me hope for my future!!

A mantra that has always helped me -Remember the hardest times are behind you, AND they have filled you with determination and strength!

  • So many great resources have been given here, but in case it hasn't already been mentioned Allegheny County has a warmline if you ever need to talk to someone. It's not a crisis line, not a hotline, but a resource all the same for those who could use some supportive voices around them.

Keep on keeping on, dude. What you're going through is undeniably hard, but you'll come out the other side of this one day.

    https://www.peer-support.org/warmline

Just want to say thanks for sharing this—I’ve never seen this resource before!

  • Never tell employers about your car troubles, health problems, or anything that might make them assume that you’d be unreliable.

They just asked. It wasn’t something I wanted to talk about.

lie 🤷‍♂️ as long as you can get to work on time and do your job its irrelevant

Yep, former HR. It’s a “disqualifying question” so just lie. All my love to you, OP.

    In other words, legal discrimination

That means OP needs to be very realistic about the commute, though. If they're in the South Hills, a commute to Downtown can probably survive some wildcards. A commute out to somewhere with a transfer and/or a decent walk after the bus with who knows what weather might be a little less realistic.

If they've applied to 100s of jobs, they might've run out of closer options.

"Do you have a car?". Yes. "Do you have reliable transportation?" Yes.

What they are really asking is if you can/will show up on time every time. The answer is yes.

    That's telling the truth.

You should always answer any transportation / car answers with “yes I have reliable transportation” and leave it at that. They don’t need to know if you’re talking about a car, a bike, a bus, or Uber.

This. Don't lie, but don't elaborate.

Just reply that you have a car and dependable transportation. No need to explain further.

You can always say “I have dependable transportation and have an excellent track record of timely attendance which my references can speak to”. You don’t have to mention anything about a car.

It’s crazy how you can get punished for being honest and transparent with people. I’m glad to see so many people in here have offered some helpful options for you.

Here’s to hoping that 2026 turns things around for you mate!

    Lie

    Cool

it sucks to say "just lie" but its not their business if you own a vehicle as long as you can show up to work on time

Definitely never say anything about your personal circumstances except that you can do the job and have nothing that would block you from getting there on time.

I’ve been out of the job market for about a decade, but I think the employer can only ask if you will have a problem getting back-and-forth to work. Any more than that is supposedly not be allowed to ask in an interview. And you don’t have to explain how you’re getting to work. You just say no I will not have a problem getting here.

    Lie about it then

  • If you’re interested in nursing, think about getting a job as a patient care tech at UPMC. Pay is ok and if you work for them they’ll pay for nursing school

100% agree and they do something to help with bus passes. If you can get in to a preop area it’s easier on the body and they use patient care techs.

The anesthesia departments are always looking for anesthesia techs. I work with two that were pulled from environmental services and they are just good people.

UPMC also has a nursing program that’s part time weekends only so you can still work. I work with a nurse that relies on public transportation and she’s always on time and honestly my favorite coworker.

Nursing is 100% the way to pull yourself out of bad situations and changes the projectory of your whole future. I like to think most nurses care about people and love nursing but at the end of the day it’s a great paycheck for a lot of nurses and they’re good at their jobs.

You can DM me as well. I’m an associate degree CCAC nurse that is a CRNA. Nursing changed my life.

    I like this thank you.

I second this…my gf went back to school to be a nurse and is making 90k in less than 5 years. I’m in Year 12 at an above average public school district making 68k. There will always be a need for nurses.

One thing about pittsburgh is you either need to find a job and a trade, a hospital, education, banks, or one of the tech businesses around the area.

Definitely look into the hospitals they are always hiring for something. It doesn’t even have to be medical. They have lots of non-clinical jobs. I think you could even look into medical coding and billing or supply management and be surprised at what’s out there.

If you don’t land a PCT position.

There is a hard and thankless job but it’s entry level at every hospital called Central Sterile Tech or Central Processing Tech. It’s cleaning surgical instruments. It’s gross but gross away from dealing with patients directly. They’ll hire almost anyone with a pulse. It’s a great foot in the door type of job and how I started in Healthcare (15 years ago). After a year of anything UPMC will cover the cost of your tuition for Nursing School.

I was in a very similar situation that you’ve described when I got my first Central job. It will get better, I promise. You just have to outlast the storm.

  • Contact Careerlink. They help with resumes, interviewing techniques, and may help you find a job.

I awarded this comment to hopefully boost and OP will see- I worked there years ago and they help with everything from resumes to GED help to job placements to job training!

  • I'm answering this based on your past posts.

First. Stop fucking gambling. No poor person has ever gambled themselves rich. Thats not how they build the giant buildings in Vegas.

Second. It looks like you have a mechanical aptitude. That is where you should focus your search. Start with local garages. They may not hire you as a full mechanic but there are plenty of jobs to work your way up.

    Don't forget tire places.

If you are comfortable with small engines I'm betting you are pretty handy all around. Look for gigs as maintenance worker, facilities, or handyman. Electricians and plumbers are always looking for someone with a good back who can learn the trade.

Hold out a little longer and landscaping jobs open up. Your ability to fix small motors .. buddy! You could own your own landscaping company by Sept.

Kind of adding on here and with the hospital/care tech suggestion - big hospital systems also require quite a few handymen. You could get your way into the hospital in a janitorial role, patient care tech, registration. If that role doesn’t feel like the best match, in a year look to transfer into the facilities/engineering department. Many times if your resume doesn’t exactly align as an outside candidate they may not consider you, but as an inside candidate they will.

I know a mechanic in the bridgeville area who might just be interested in an entry level mechanic, if OP sees this

  • Please don’t give up.

I don’t live in Pgh anymore so I’m not sure what to recommend in terms of programs.

What I DO want to say is that you CAN do this. Please don’t stop trying. It’s going to work out.

Have you considered churches? They’re often looking for grounds and custodial staff. Schools too, sometimes, especially after hours stuff like custodial work and security. Apartment complexes need grounds ppl, and so do hospitals, where they are also often hiring for other things.

Focus on interview skills. Practice with AI if needed. Don’t talk about the car thing if you don’t have to.

    And don’t give up.

  • Apply for SNAP at pa.gov and at your interview tell them you wasn't to go to an employment and training program. You will get a monthly bus pass and help finding a job. There is even some training available. You can also looking into the SNAP JETS programs. You have to sign up for one of those on your own (Bidwell is one of the options) but if you are signed up for SNAP the program will let the county assistance office know and you'll still get the bus pass. You may also be eligle for help with car repairs if you get a job that requires a vehicle. FYI- 21 years working for welfare

Great advice. Thank you a ton.

  • Life is not coming to an end, life is about to start getting good. You're 24, you can read and write, you're in Pittsburgh, those are three things just on the surface that make this redemption story worth checking out. We just need to get you a job. You already have the applications in. Your timing is already spot on. Because tomorrow is Monday. In between the hours of 10-4, go to those places. Introduce yourself. Start with the nearest open establishment. Get a job there, it doesn't matter what it is, because it's a step, you might only be there for the training. Same for the second closest open establishment. There's not many hours in the first few weeks after getting hired, so get a few jobs. You're one name in a stack of 500 resumes right now. Resumes are just a formality, be the name that's in the building. Showing up is half of what a job is anyway. It's someone's job to hire someone, they don't want to call around looking for who's still interested or available. They want to have completed schedule interviews as much as you want to have interviews scheduled. Really doesn't matter if you like the job, it's probably better that you don't like them. Because it's just steps, you want to outgrow them. If you're lucky you'll meet someone who can get you a better job on the way to that interview for the job you didn't want. And if you're not lucky, at least make the best out of it.

Dude you’re a legend. I will take this information and apply it. Thank you.

On another note, your post reads desperate. Don't be like that at the interviews or when meeting with potential employers or networking. Sob stories don't instil confidence. Have the aura of the person that will fit into a team and be a positive presence. You're really comfortable with the city's transit system, not your cars busted so you have rely on the bus. Say it with confidence like the bus driver is a professional. It's a bold and smart choice to take the bus because it's more reliable than driving the roads.

Act like you’ve been there before. Act with confidence, OP. It’s not lying, it’s acting. Good luck.

  • Unfortunately, finding work can be very difficult. From my personal experience, try to avoid putting in dozens of applications/resumes at once. I got overwhelmed and couldn’t keep track of them. Try to find a few you’re really interested in and focus on those. You’ll need to reach out to them and follow up persistently. Picking up a trade such as painting houses can be really rewarding and is always in demand.

Hang in there. The time of your life you’re currently in can be challenging, and many of us felt the same and came out on the other side. Add on top a lot of external stresses (economic, personal, cultural) and it’s more than understandable you’re hitting some road bumps. I can’t say I know exactly how you feel, but I’ve been through my share of trials and I’m rooting for you!!

Don’t forgot to take advantage of the beautiful parks and museums around the city to keep yourself sane. You can get a membership to all the Carnegie museums for about $6/month and it helps keep me sane to go regularly.

By the way, I’d suggest taking advantage of LIHEAP to help cover bills and apply for CAP (customer assistance or something) from Duquesne Light. Helped me out a bunch when I was struggling.

Contact the dollar energy fund too, they have grants that can get you qualified for in addition to liheap and cap

Wow. Thank you an absolute ton. My heart is so heavy and my mind is scattered. I appreciate you so much. Feel free to reach out if you ever want to talk and maybe we can hit one of these places together! I’m rooting for you too. Take care 🤍

Getting out of the house can really be life changing when stuck in a situation like that.

You can go to museums, the zoo, etc for free through your library card via rad pass. https://radpass.org/

    Wishing you the best ❤️

i second painting houses!! i did this for about 6 months before finding my current job with no professional training. i got to pick my hours (mostly), work alone, do something peaceful/satisfying, and just listen to music.

  • If you can make it to Upper Saint Clair, we are hiring.

I'm making $24.54/h now. Started with basically no experience a year and a half ago.

Would love to hear more. That’s close to me. Sending you a dm.

  • Why are you telling an interviewer about your car situation? It's irrelevant. You take public transportation or whatever and you arrive early for your shift. So feeding potential employers reasons not to hire you. You're hurting yourself for no reason.

As someone who is somewhat part of the hiring process at my store, it is in top 3 questions asked based on what type of work you do. If OP isn't looking at salary positions (assumed you probably have a car at that point already), hourly workers get several questions about their reliability on getting to and from work.

    It fucking sucks :)

I also do hiring -I just ask if they have a safe, reliable way to get to work  -the bus, an Uber, walking, or a bike all fit that.

Yes this is question that gets asked, particularly of low wage hourly workers. How you answer that question is key. You can easily affirm your ability to get to work on time workout telling them your car took a shit.

I believe it. I was always asked either if I had reliable transportation and a follow up of "do you have your own vehicle", or asked if I had a car flat -out. Sometimes that would be followed up with "what car do you drive so we know what to look for" if they had certain parking lot rules. I can't just elaborate on a lie like that. And yes, these jobs were on bus lines (for instance in Oakland) and they still wouldn't hire without your own car.

This does depend on the job, but I would never volunteer this info, and would avoid applying for a job where it can be an issue. You can def work well around public transport, you just need to plan a bit. Honestly, with what parking costs, the savings can be tremendous.

FWIW, I’m a chef and have been in restaurants for years. People in Pittsburgh who use public transportation can only work certain shifts, because many routes shut down at a set time. If your last bus leaves at midnight, it will present problems for later shifts.

Just be aware of when you need to arrive and leave a job, and if you can make that work, go for it. If they ask directly about a car, tell them you have one, but prefer to take the bus whenever possible. And while fast food isn’t glamorous, it’s $5-600 a week you’re not making now, and can help you float until you find something better.

This. The fact you made it to the interview, presumably in person, should be enough.

this is why autistic people have such a hard time getting through the interview portion. in what world should lying be the knee-jerk reaction? why would you think that’s an obvious thing to do?

    I love this. Shoutout you.

Because you want and need the job

    They ask lol

You don't have to tell them your car is broken. If they ask if you have reliable transportation, and you can get to the job walking or using public transit, just say yes. If they ask if you have a car, and having a car is not required for the job (like needing to travel to different sites), then treat it as them asking if you have reliable transportation, and say yes.

Lie. Say you have solid transportation.

This is the correct answer. You do not owe any potential employer honesty.

Becasue they certainly wont be honest to you!

You answer it with yes I have reliable transportation to get here. That isn't a lie. Again, learn how to interview better. The Web is full of resources.

There is no law against lying to them. It is none of their fucking business how you get to work! What do they think public transit exists for?

Fuck car-brains. Fuck capitalism. Why do workers have so few rights in the USA - and especially Pennsylvania - compared to the civilized world?

  • Idk if you have college experience or if you’re even interested but I go to CCAC for free and they give me about $5k a semester in financial aid that goes right into my bank account and ngl it’s great, I also have a work study through them

They have two year degrees that lead to better jobs and opportunities like nursing and stuff or ik one is where you take notes in a courtroom

(They also have free food, bus passes, and I get a lot of free extra things too just for swinging by events)

Ik it’s not a job rn but maybe something to think about in the future ❤️ I’m 23f and just started this year and already feel much better about myself 😭

    Good luck with everything!

I’m acctually in the process of doing this myself. You’re an angel for dropping this year though. Thank you :)

Piece of advice: I emailed literally every financial advisor and the resource navigators and they are SO helpful!!! My financial aid from PHEAA was late this fall so they randomly just gave me the money and I still got the PHEAA amount later, so it was just an extra $1k that I got simply for asking. Make sure to do the scholarships when they open, it’s only like 5 questions but I got a lot of money from that, too!!

And also dropping this here just in case it helps you but you can take one class per semester at any other university in Pittsburgh for the CCAC prices, in the PCHE program. I’m only saying this bc it’s pretty hidden and every advisor I asked about it didn’t know anything but now I will have taken 4 pitt classes by the time I graduate for free 💅🏻

Dm me if you need anything about the process!

  • Hey bro, try some hotels downtown. They are all hiring and pay pretty good. The William Penn is a union hotel and is a good place to work. Same with the Fairmont and Westin. Lots of people take buses downtown. You will get through this, hang in there.

  • Trust me, I've been in your position before and it really sucks and I hope for the best. But I work for a rental company and we're ways looking for people. You can apply here. Also I have some knowledge about cars. You can DM me and lmk what issues you're having and I can see how to help

    Applied. Thank you so much.

  • If your interested in electrical stuff join the IBEW local 5. Great pay, excellent free health care and pension. All you gotta do to join is apply, pass a math test than interview. If you have questions PM me.

Seconding this. Been in local 5 for 10 years. Construction may not appeal to you (it didn't to me) and fell into it after dropping out of college. And it's been the best thing that's happened to me.

I just want to emphasize it's not just a job, it's a career. First year apprentices (no knowledge required, just show up and learn) start at $19 an hour I believe now (with full benefits day 1). In just 4 short years, you'll be over $50 an hour.

Full benefits day 1 minus pension accumulation until year 2 when your sworn in!

  • Can you ride the bus or trolley?

  • Well for sure take advantage of food banks. A lot of churches can also help with food, even if it’s not your church. Some offer free dinners for anyone that shows up. I don’t know any off the top of my head but I’m sure searching google will net some results. Also a lot of people here mention too good to go so make sure to check that out. What kind of work are you looking for? Do you have any specialized training or are you willing to do that?

Steel city table in south side does free dinners tues and thurs

  • [deleted]

Omg yes. Sending you a dm.

You sound like that scene from Christmas vacation where cousin Eddie is unemployed and his wife says “he’s been holding out for a management position.” If you have no degree and refuse to work in food service or retail, where exactly do you think you’re going to work? Most office jobs require at least an associates or X amount of experience.

  • Dial 211, they have a ton of resources for all of your troubles. Stay up! Life’s a bitch…everyone needs someone sometimes. 🙏🙏

    Bless your heart

  • How about a career in pest management? You’d be provided a service vehicle that you take home (though can’t use it for personal things). My company has several job openings in Pittsburgh.

  • Take whatever you can get until you find something better. You are not above working at a fast food biz.

  • Where are you located?

Yeah! I'm looking to hire for a pretty easy retail type job if you'll tell us that.

I’m willing to travel anywhere in Pittsburgh but I’m located in the south hills and put it in the post.

  • What kind of experience do you have and what areas do you hope to find work? Like preferences?

  • Don’t give up, please do not give up. There are resources and orgs in Pittsburgh who can help. CareerLink and Literacy Pittsburgh, if you take a class at literacy Pittsburgh (which are free) you have access to assistance programs. They’re a good resource for unemployment/upskilling and work closely with careerlink.

  • Even if things don't get better for a while, if what you say here is true, you are WAYYY ahead of a lot of people, in that you can do good, hard work. Don't give up, you have so much more than you realize.

  • I'm sorry this is happening to you. Here's what I would do. Find the best fast food job you can get and take it. I'm sure there are Chipotle's hiring and I hear they have decent benefits. Start paying your bills on a rotating schedule so no single bill gets too far behind. Go to compass and sign up for every social service you qualify for. Food stamps, Medicaid, housing? Whatever. Go apply in person if it's confusing. Find a local food bank, let them know your situation and see what they can do. Making sure you're fed is super important, and there are resources available. Take everything you can and get back on your feet.

  • hello! please don't be discouraged! you'd be surprised how many feel similar especially these days! know you're not alone! we all hit bottom at some point...some more than once! i wanted to give a few places to try to find work...one i personally used often when i lived in pittsburgh and needed extra cash fast. there's a temp agency located in lawrenceville called people ready. apply in person but you can start app online. they do what i referred to as "day work." you'll be set up with an app that posts jobs and shifts along with pay per hour. you can pick up any of these shifts...show up at the location day of shift...work and get paid within 24 hours...most time by next afternoon. they do a lot of work with the local stadiums cleaning and pay very well to do so..almost $20/hr no experience. secondly apply for Amazon. there are multiple warehouse over by the airport and each starts at about $20/hr no experience. ive worked for Amazon since 2017 and get paid a very decent wage. despite the bad rap i love it. it helped me dig out of my own hole and get stable. i will admit it IS physical work..lots of lifting and walking but your body does adjust. normally they dont hire right now as they just come out of their peak time but they opened a new building this month so you may be in luck! if you dont have transportation: you can take public transit to ikea in robinson...then look for a svrta shuttle at ikea(this is actually Steubenville,Ohio public transit ) they then go straight to amazon parking lots to drop off! worst case scenario: public transit to airport, then lyft or uber to amazon which is only 8 miles from airport. you can find svrta routes on their website and they are exact change system. i believe its $5 per trip for the amazon route. amazon also gives medical benefits 401k and pays for additional schooling. any aid id go straight to the local welfare office i believe is still located downtown.theyll guide you on what you may qualify for right now ..at minimum food aid. good luck! IF Amazon is not hiring now they will be come may/june for sure! they only hire in as seasonal but dont pass on that because they will give option to transfer to full employee after that

  • Your life is just beginning. I have had epilepsy since I was 8 years old and unable to drive. I got into a nursing program and took the bus to school and then worked as a nursing assistant afterwards. Did private duty and was able to complete my homework while watching a patient. It paid off and I now work as a RN since 20 years ago. Was able to get my license and it has paid off. Just remember you put in your time and work and life is waiting for you to live it!! Also I did not have family to help pay. Good luck 🍀

  • Typical Pittsburgh resident's response:

"wow that sucks. hope it gets better for you. have you tried networking and job fairs? sometimes you just got to take a entry level position part time and work your way up, that's what I did back in the 70s. anyway. WHY are Mt. Lebo property taxes so high? this city punishes people for being successful, its a joke"

  • Why are you being honest with them about your car? You need to ask the people in your life for advice job hunting; if you’re telling them this you’re probably also accidentally shooting your self in the foot being an honest person in other ways.

  • It’s not just you, the Pittsburgh job market feels nearly impossible in the past year or two for entry level positions regardless of education or field. I’m about to graduate college, and I know I’ll get downvoted to hell in this sub for it… but I’m planning on moving to Boston or NYC. Despite 1-200 applications in the past year I’ve got nothing local. It’s bad everywhere, but I’ve got to final round interviews in other cities with a fraction of the effort that it took for no results here.

Pittsburgh is where I grew up and it will always be my home. But there is a reason why people our age often don’t stick around, even if we come back later.

  • Listen your not alone, you have to attract positive and let go of negative thinking. You will be fine half the country is in the same situation.. inhale, exhale... Dont overthink and worry about what you can't control. anyway. It will all line up soon, winter is slow, in PA. grey and depressing..I grew up in sheraden, way back, Greentree last i lived in Bethel Park 2013-2019. We all have ups and downs, literally more than half the country is in over $100k debt, the weather will clear soon, this is a patience test for you... I Been there and am Now, just not in the city anymore. Think positive, one day at a time. small goals completed feel great, make lists if you have to , like a load of anxiety off your shoulders..WOW this is long, sorry you'll be ok hang in there.many jobs in the South hills alone 👊🏻

  • I am 36 (f) and also in Pittsburgh. I have been in many situations similar to yours over the years, and I promise it can (and will) get better. Just hang in there. PM me if you need some help with groceries or would like a meal Doordashed to you.

  • AHN and UPMC are usually hiring. I don’t know off the top of my head, minimum starting pay is around $20/hour for custodial/transport services, or entry level positions into the lab. Both UPMC and AHN have tuition assistance/reimbursement programs for employees, usually covers half the cost but this can vary depending on whatever agreements are in place with the school (UPMC + Pitt). CCAC has lots of affordable options once you get your feet back under you.

Good luck and keep up your efforts. 100’s of applications sounds promising, try to be patient for something to materialize. I found 22-26 year age range probably some of the most difficult years. It felt like starting off with little to no resources and every employer wants years of experience for entry level positions. It’s not forever or the end, it gets better.

  • Express Employment Professionals is a great resource for finding a job! They will help you for free!

  • See if your local area has a 211 website, check for local food banks & such. Removing food as something you have to pay for could help a lot.

In terms of work, if you really need emergency help, signing up for the service might not be a bad move. Would solve a lot of your problems quickly. Some government agencies are offering huge sign-on bonuses right now.

Also, given your age, check out the local trade unions for an apprenticeship. They really need help & pay a lot.

  • They're not allowed to ask you if you have a car, just if you have a dependable mode of transportation. Do not offer more info than they ask for. You have T and bus access more than most areas of the city do.

  • Message me directly and get a short resume together. I run a business that we may be able to get you into. I didn't see any red flags in anything you said. That's just hardship, and you need support.

  • I don't know but the problem is with South hills and an employment but every retail establishment and cranberry township is tripping over itself to hire anyone with a pulse that walks in the door.

If all you can get is fast food then take fast food better to do something you don't really want to do for now then do nothing and have no money at all.

Not sure where in the South hills you are.

  • I’m so sorry to hear this. If you have the ability to work from home an option is scheduling call centers for like AHN or UPMC. You get health insurance, 401K and it gets ur foot in the door to move up. That’s how I started my career and I’m now 32 and I was 24 when I started in scheduling. I’ve moved around and bit outside the call center and I just got a job in compliance and audits so I get to yell at docs all day! Don’t give up!

  • Hit the fast food joint up for now all you need is a pay ck. Reach out through what comments are saying and follow through. Gotta put a plan together.

  • Hey, are you currently receiving food stamps and/or medical assistance? If not, you should apply for those. I work for the Department of Human Services and could answer any questions if you would need help with that.

  • Hey man, 24 year old here. First of all thank you for talking about this because I think this is the way that most of us feel right now but everyone is trying to play along and pretend it's not the average experience for people our age.

I looked at your page and you seem pretty mechanically gifted with like computers and motors and such. Maybe you could look into IT or some kind of repairing business? There are so many colleges in Pittsburgh, I'm sure one of them has an IT department that needs help (plus I've worked with a lot of them, their solution is usually to turn the device off and on again). I've also heard that hospitals are where it's at now. There's tons of different kinds of positions open and you'd get all the benefits I'm pretty sure.

Nursing homes are also usually a good bet because they are so so so short staffed. Even if you work in food service, they pay pretty well. Sometimes they'll even pay for you to get certain certifications/degrees.

I bartend downtown, turnover at restaurants down here is crazy. You'd definitely be able to get a hosting/serving job if you can stomach talking to people. Plus it's a great way to meet people who have opportunities for you that actually suit you. I know a bunch of electricians and blue collar guys who can't keep employees to save their lives. Again, I don't think you need much training for some of those positions.

Have you looked into Amazon/FedEx/Ups warehouse or delivery jobs? I know amazon distribution centers are allllwaaaays looking for drivers.

There's some super nice libraries in the South Hills with all kinds of resources, meetings, and helpers. (Also they're fucking sick and have like crazy shit that you can rent out for funsies like VR sets and drones n shit) Spend an afternoon at a library and see if someone can help you with your resume! You seem really knowledgeable and well spoken and down to earth. You just gotta know your worth and figure out how to pitch it to people :)

While youre still unemployed tho I would milk that for all it's worth and get on food stamps and state medical insurance and all that good stuff if you are not already.

Chin up chest out man, it'll get better ❤️

  • I have an auto/woodworking shop in my backyard. Given /u/barsmart’s dig into your post history/mechanical aptitude - I’d be open to helping you fix your car, depending what ‘blew up’ on it. I’ve been debating taking on an apprentice sometime this year as well. Btw…mechanical aptitude goes a LONG way credibility wise - as it generally indicates a solid approach to general problem solving 🤷‍♂️

  • A lot of churches do good faith food banks meaning that you dont even need ID. I know my church does every other Tuesday. If you want info you can private message me about it. You dont have to belong to the church either.

  • I’m down to help with a network of places currently hiring in oil and gas as well! Shoot me a dm

  • Hey, yo, I've felt the same way, for almost 2 decades, this city has a unique way of sapping our life force I think.

  • I’m 24 too and did my 4 years in the military after not having exactly the best jump off point after highschool. I’d recommend it if you want more stability for your future.

  • You are not alone! I've been struggling since August aswell!

  • I was in a similar situation at 24, and joined the US Navy. It wasn’t something I had ever thought I would do, but it turned my life around. By age 30, I had a technical BS degree, valuable work experience, and had seen the world. I was n a completely different situation at age 32. :) Hang in there, my friend. You never know what life has in store for you, and you’ve just taken the first positive step forward. Ask, and you shall receive.

  • Don’t count out looking for jobs in smaller cities not far from Pgh where COL can be cheaper, albeit public transit less established. Just a thought. Good luck.

  • Labor trades. Look into what interests you. If not sure then join the Laborers Local 1058. Work that and it should give you an idea of what trade you might want to try.

  • Have you considered working for the Commonwealth? The state is always hiring. There's a number of jobs you can get without experience. Decent pay and great benefits.

    https://share.google/3bKaXxdNfz6uBthXu

The one thing about getting hired with the state is it can take a long time. The process in general of hiring might take like 6 months or something, I got a crappy job while I was applying. So like you could work in fast food to have some money while you were doing the application process. Just a thought

  • I've had a few friends with limited work history or take public transportation have success getting jobs at various Goodwill of SWPA retail locations.

     https://recruiting2.ultipro.com/GOO1023/JobBoard/a6390029-ef46-e192-b376-4efc66bb6a4c/?q=&o=postedDateDesc&w=&wc=&we=&wpst=

Goodwill also might be able to help with your immediate needs - just call the welcome center (charity services) 1-877-499-3526 and see what help is available.

https://pittsburghfoodbank.org/ See if there are any food banks close to you - if you take the bus bring an empty backpack and a reusable shopping bag to get food home.

  • Yo! I am trying and struggling to get my buddy at my current job so I cannt say at my current gig, however, go onto pitts job application site, the section or department “DLAR” is almost always hireing, It’s a rough gig, like sorta emotionally rough not physically. But yea, it’s repetitive and a little sad, but the people who work there are nice and well intended. I worked there for years and gained a lot of experience! But check DLAR out, You would think they require and extensive research background…. But they don’t! I am a fine arts and world history major, But I worked for DLAR as a labtech level 2 and learned sheep are fun to work with and monkeys are scary as all heck :-). You can do it! :-)

  • You might start lying about your transportation situation in future interviews.

  • Go to an employment agency. They should be able to at least help find you a temp position with potential to end up a full company employee somewhere.

Also check the site Flexjobs. It's specifically for remote work from home positions.

  • UPMC nursing program. It's free while you are a student. You pay via paycheck once you start working for them. Hurry I think the deadline is soon. Search ‘UPMC Scholars Program’

  • Seriously, if you can use public transpo. . . just lie.

  • United Way 211 can help with utilities and other things. They have Pittsburgh division to assist with individuals here.

Please don’t give up. I know how incredibly hard it feels when everything seems against you. You feel like a mountain is building on top of you and there is no way out from under it. I promise there is. Please don’t give up.

Also, there is no shame in taking a fast food job to bridge the gap until you find something else. Sometimes just having something to wake up for can make all the difference in the world.

Lastly, what type of jobs are you applying for/interested?

  • If you’re struggling for meals, the Steel City Table in South Side serves hot meals every Tuesday and Thursday and I believe has a food bank!

  • Are you able to ride the T or a bus? That ma help widen opportunities.

  • And if you’re in the south hills and in need of food/financial assistance please check out SHIM (south hills interfaith movement). They have food pantry and it’s on the T line. With the food it may be better to uber but we are here for you! Call us. 412 854-9120.

  • When you get that job, if you have a place to plug in, look for deals on EVs. For example, this Mercedes would probably be not much more than a bus pass, would cost only 4 cents per mile to drive and still is under warranty for 3 more years. These cheap EVs are range.limited, meaning you might only be able to drive 70 miles in a day, but that is enough to get around the burg. You clild print even door dash 2 hours at dinner time each day and make more than enough to pay for it.

  • Amazon is hiring less right now, but is always hiring. Whether warehouse or driver it won’t be fun, but pays better than just about any other entry level position. I’ve been trying to find my way out for 1.5 years, but I can’t find anyone hiring for enough of a pay bump to justify giving up the flexibility. I also happen to love delivery work.

  • usps will hire you. if i couldnt afford to eat tho id be taking one of them fast food jobs no questions asked

  • My son works at Medspeed and they are always looking for drivers. They have their own vehicles so you just need to get to work and back. Good luck to you!

  • If you have a clean driving record and no DUIs you can apply at PRT, it's not that hard to get a job there like it used to be. Cramping hours but you'll get really good pay and benefits and it's not a job it's more of a career with a retirement plan. They will require you to have transportation but just lie and say you do it first and figured out as you go.

  • This may help with your immediate food problem. I belong to a group that serves hot buffet meals on Sunday afternoons at churches in the South Hills. Living Stones. The food is donated by restaurants, hospitals and nursing homes. We freeze it and then reheat it for dinners. There is always extra to take home. We also have a social worker that might be able to work with you on some of your other issues. The next dinner is 4:30 p.m., Jan. 18, at Northway Community Church, Potomac Avenue in Dormont. We'd love to see ya!

  • I won’t share more resources or tell you where to apply for jobs or how to live your life but I will tell you that it 100% is worth living. Please reach out to a professional and consider getting some help. Pittsburgh is notoriously brutal this time of year and the weather can really hammer down on those thoughts. You’ll make it through this, just keep going.

  • I’m in my 40s and back in 2019 I almost lost everything. I had nowhere to go if I lost my house and the sheriff was knocking. I was to the point of planning my exit from this earthly plane. I’m in banking and could not get anyone to hire me, the job market was impossible. I eventually found a part time job at a dog daycare cleaning up poop all day with a bunch of teenagers for $10 and in the meantime gave my resume to every temp agency I could find. My rep at Robert Half knew I had the skills and ability and she really went to bat for me and got me several decent temp jobs until she landed me in one of the big banks downtown that was the catalyst to my current job that I love and that pays the bills. This month I’m making my final bankruptcy payment! 🙌🏻

Send a resume to every temp agency you can find! You will get through it with the drive to dig yourself out and the tenacity to not give up! ❤️

  • If you're capable of doing labor the 373 laborers union will take you today. You'll be making $28 an hour in no time. No education, no qualifications outside of wanting to work, are needed. If you miss a day, you might end up waiting for a day or two to get on a job, but you'll get picked up. If you're reliable and smart and put in some time, you will find reliable work.

    https://www.local373.org/wage-info

  • Do what you gotta do for that bread. Sometimes you gotta lie. Say you’ll be there. But you gotta be there

  • I sure hope youre working the fast foot jobs in the meantime....work is work. Good luck OP.

  • I would look into a nursing home or assisted living facility in your area, a lot of times they are way understaffed. Hard work but you can make decent money. There is a Concordia in south hills, maybe check there

  • Outreach to SHIM, in Bethel Park, they might be able to assist or provide resources.

  • Message me... Hang in there. I'm 50, and I'll tell you what I tell everyone your age. It's normal and just part of growing up until you find some purpose in life.. I work in the government sector. If you're interested in a career that pays well let me know. We can talk about the opportunity.

  • 24 male? No problem with drugs? Wanna be a union carpenter? Reach out to me, I’ll help ya out.

  • I’ve had interviews but am having issues where they feel I won’t be dependable because my car is messed up. Which is crazy they think someone can’t be dependable on public transportation.

Don't tell them your car is messed up. They have no right to know. If you know that you can get yourself to work reliably, the only answer you need to give when asked if you have a car is, "Yes, I have reliable transportation to work. Getting to work on time consistently will not be any problem whatsoever for me."

Signed, someone who lived in this city 3 years without a car. I got laid off midway through that 3 years and interviewed a ton of places. Never got pressed any further when I said some version of "Getting to work will not be a problem for me".

  • keep your eyes on fine wine and good spirits. no openings in the south hills right now, but there usually is. starting pay is 17.38 an hour and it’s a union job. governmentjobs.com is a good place to look. many fwgs employees rely on public transit.

  • When I was your age I was in a similar situation. Wasn't really able to find any jobs, didn't have any relationships/friendships to keep me sane and my family life was even worse. I really felt worthless and I became suicidal. I'm 36 now and live a great life because a few kind folks told me not to give up along the way. This moment won't last forever, just keep your head up and keep grinding away.. something eventually will fall into place that will change things drastically for you. I'm rooting for you.

  • I work at a shop that's hiring right now, 18 bucks an hour, union, just change oil and tires. We call it a retirement home

  • I have worked a lot with this organization called LandForce, and they are great! If you have any interest in being outdoors, it could be a great fit. They have a team of people who will help you overcome obstacles and plan for a future career... good luck! 24 is young! you will figure it out!! https://www.landforcepgh.org/join-our-crew/

  • If you’re not already connected to the Greater Pittsburgh food bank I’d really recommend looking into it or applying. I am always referring people to this resource and hear great things

  • Hey brother, I'm going to shoot you a message. We have a group where you may find a positive outlet and possibly some opportunities or resources.

It takes courage to ask for help. Keep Going.
