Not a euphemism for what happening politically rn, there is black ice all over Pittsburgh tonight. On my 20 min drive home I saw two accidents and a car with its emergency lights on, stuck in a front lawn.
I'm new ish to Pitt and don't have snow/all weather tires. It's possible everyone else already knows this since you've lived here for a while, but be careful.
South Hills are slick, especially in Bethel Park and South Park.
Yeah we’re pretty slick

Brookline is fucked. I hear nothing but spinning tires and personally witnessed a car into a pole. I salted half my street with my own salt just to protect my cars.
How long ago did you drive out in BP? Cuz they were fine for me
4:45-6
I drove from Bethel Park to the East End around 5:30, warmed my partner - who was at home - that I’d be taking my time getting home because of how slippy I was out.
Always gotta be on your toes when there’s black ice around
It's transparent and sneaky
What about all this oppressive white snow?
(For those confused… https://youtu.be/efiW2K8gASM?si=q5gmxSomsiPuOs8U)
Black ice snuck up on me and nearly robbed me of my balance

Whoever downvted this has obviously never watched this grade A skit 🤣 I bet they don't even know where jay kwellen at!
Even without context I thought this was funny and now to know there’s a Key and Peele skit I know it’s hilarious
A lady crashed into a telephone pole in Banksville and then slipped as she was getting out of her car 😩 I felt so bad
I just slid on Shady near Minadeo in Squirrel Hill. But also, I probably was a little arrogant. Won't make the same mistake again.
Crashed there an hour ago! 4 car accident
Oh, no! I'm sorry to hear that!! You okay?
Yes all good thankfully. Car ain’t doing so hot lol
Glad that you're okay. Sorry about the car!
Is the pizza ok?
Minadeo is a school Mineo’s is the pizza
you are 100% correct. I just read it wrong because I was thinking about pizza.
I wasn't thinking about pizza but I am now
I’m also thinking about pizza
Between you and me and no one else, I even had pizza for dinner tonight before reading this but I was still thinking about pizza.
The important question is: are the roads safe enough for me to get Mineo’s right now?
Now I'm thinking about pizza again.
A layperson ponders a subject once. A scholar revisits their body of knowledge frequently
You are a pizza scholar
Pregnant and now I’m thinking about pizza 🥴
And Mineo’s is on Murray
But only one of them you can eat.
I totally missed the Shady too. I saw "Minadeo's" and I was like "FUCK YEA I WANT PIZZA!!!!" Just that one word.
Sorry for the confusion!! I did live closer to Mineo's but alas, I had no pizza!
The angle there is crazy! Not as bad as Negley but not good for slippy days.
I didn't realize the steepness until i began sliding and then I REALLY noticed.
My partner used to live and work all in that 3 block area.
He plays hockey I guess he just skated up and down!
All the drivers I encountered on my way home:

Someone was revving and spinning for a good few minutes I could hear on the hill on Mt. Oliver.
Tis the song of winter that unprepared vehicles sing loud and proud.
You're new-ish to Pittsburgh
Welcome. Here, Pitt = University, Pgh = Pittsburgh.
I was definitely not expecting it. Had to take my toddler to urgent care at 3:30 and the roads were fine. On my way home at 5 there were patches of black ice everywhere.
I’m impressed that you got in and out of urgent care so quickly! Hope all is well.
Yeah, I almost ate it trying to get my car out of driveway to grab some snacks for tonight's games. Don't go out unless you need to cuase its gona be sketchy.
I saw tire tracks up on the sidewalk near Emerald View Park so decided to wait (as a pedestrian) while a car came around the corner. They skidded on black ice and drove FURTHER onto the sidewalk than the previous tire tracks! If I hadn't stopped walking I likely would've been hit by them 😳
Super slippy in West Mifflin. They had some a cop car get stranded. Stuck at the top of a slippy hill
I'm out that way and watched an Amazon truck roll backwards down a hill while spinning his wheels like crazy (he was ok)
Yes I’ve noticed the roads are slippery, especially in the north hills.
*slippy
Slippy aht. Lol
Route 8 from Gibsonia to Glenshaw wasn’t too bad. Not sure if they plowed and salted already but I’m pretty certain they did because route 8 is usually a sheet of ice masquerading as a road when this happens.
Just drove to Dormont from Peters Twp area where my mom lives (not Pittsburgh, I know). Peters was salting roads when I left. Saw/drove over a little black ice on Connor Rd but fortunately everything else seemed pretty decent (wanted to go see my horse out in 84 area but skipped once I saw this thread, I have a Subaru that usually does well but black ice is a whole different beast and I’m a fraidy cat driver lol). The worst was on the alley where my garage/back of my house is. So far main roads seem to be okay around these parts, my partner is coming from Sharpsburg to Dormont via 28 (to Banksville I’d imagine) though and that has me a little worried. 😬 hope yinz are all staying safe out there!
Partner is home, said 28 wasn’t too bad either. His car is…. not always great in snowy weather but said he did fine until our Dormont alley. Hopefully that’s still the case for everyone who has to travel that road rn!!
Unless you have studs, there's not a lot a tire will do on ice. Your best bet is to stay warm on the couch.
National Weather Service isn't addressing it. Definitely sounds worthy of a special weather statement
Mikey and Big Bob Blllaaacckkk Iiicccceeee!
I had a scare on a downhill with a light at the bottom a few hours ago. I managed to stop without hitting the car in front of me but someone behind me ended up running off the road.
Yeah, it’s bad out there. As someone who’s from here, we really don’t get this type of sudden and ubiquitous black ice that often in winter (maybe 3-4 times a year tops), and it always takes folks by surprise.
Black ice in effect in Carnegie as well. I’ve been hearing all the cars sliding dahn my hill. Not sure why ppl attempt it, but I guess ya gotta get dahn there some haugh.
Yep. Just got hit on Forbes near shady
Are you ok?
Would imagine a 2 hour delay is in the works for PPS tomorrow, especially after the kid was killed a few weeks ago by a sliding car.
I went out to West Mifflin and the pickup ahead of me was all over the road. I had regerts about going out, but I needed to get something for my sick cat. Made it home safe, thank goodness.
I know you’re not asking, but I recommend getting a set of dedicated winter tires. My car came with summer tires, and I bought a set of winter tires because I’m not a confident winter driver. I have them on a separate set of rims because it’s cheaper to swap out tires already on rims, instead of mounting them to a set already in use. I know a lot of people love all season, but I highly recommend winters. I didn’t even know the streets were slippery (or slippy) until after I parked (on street parking on a hill bc pgh) and slipped on the street. A guy who drove up the hill after me was slipping and sliding all over the place. First time I drove up an icy street in the four years I’ve had these tires and they have impressed me! Summer tires are supposed to be better at handling rain, so I like that as a driving option.
I have Blizzak WS-90 for winters. I got them online at Tire Rack. You can set up a package deal with tires and rims and have them delivered to an auto shop you like or a dealership if you bought a car once you got here. If you have them sent to a shop or dealership, clear it with them first. That way they’ll expect them and you can have them addressed in care of someone at the shop.
It’s slippy aaht. Yinz be careful.
Ah yes, there's nothing quite like the fear and anxiety of driving at night in pittsburgh with below freezing temps and wet looking roads that reflect the streetlights. And then the relief when you get home, pry your fingers off the steering wheel and say "not today, satan. Not today."
Slippy aht in Carrick. Been kinda fun watching the cars try to go up my hill.
What is up with transplants calling this place “Pitt”?
Cranberry down 19 to Mccandless was not well treated and very icy in spots a couple hours ago. Roads look deceiving on how bad they really are. Be safe!
City side streets are real bad right noe
Always remember.....buy a sacrificial beater by Thanksgiving......and leave your good car home safe. Driving Pittsburgh 101. .
It took me a few attempts to get back up Brosville last night.
Got in a car pileup last night got hit pretty hard stay safe out there
So you’re sayin it’s slippy aht?
How is 76
I did Donegal to New Stanton about 2 hours ago and it was fine.
Why feel the need to say anything about politics? Just say the roads are bad.
Better watch out for that oppressive white snow! Lmfao
Why is this getting downvoted?!?
Downtown streets untouched as usual. Great job new mayor!!
Are there protests scheduled for the black ICE tonight?
