I was thinking Spak too but they don't open until 3 PM.
Have to follow the typical Pittsburgh restaurant selection workflow: 1) Where would I like to eat? 2) Is it open when I want to eat there? 3) No. 4) Where else might I like to eat?...
Their homemade mayo is bonkers delicious. It takes like it has a little Italian dressing in it or something. I actually use it to make pasta salad in the summer and it's awesome .
Cafe Mona has good lunches, sandwiches, crepes, salads. El Sabor is decent, grilled cheese at the cheese shop across the street from the main entrance is good. There’s a great taco truck about a 10 minute walk from the hospital towards Garfield
We spend about a month at children's and ate at the cafeteria often, just because we didn't want to leave our baby alone too often. We used to have a small basket of extra cafeteria sauces that we hid in the room. The deli sandwiches are better than Subway in my opinion, but I couldn't eat deli sandwiches for like a year after that, because it just reminded me of children's.
I have to agree. We are at children’s every 5 weeks for infusions and their cafeteria is great. The gift shop is pricey as is any hospital gift shop so if I have to buy any rewards we usually go to target after 😂 but we have been doing this for over a year.
I live in the neighborhood and had the misfortune of spending a few weeks there when my baby was little. My husband and I ended up loving the cafeteria food way more than most of the neighborhood restaurants
The cafeteria is good! We are trying to venture out and I also film my food reviews but I didn’t want to in a hospital setting. I do agree I love the food! Magee was the same way when I was there for a long period of time in the early 2000’s. I still dream of that food 😂
-Brothmonger: Amazing soup, sandwiches, and sweet treats. Can be a little tight if you're looking to eat in there though.
-Dad's Burgers and Dogs: Burgers, French fries, and hot dogs lol the classics. Not really anything special, my partner and I go here when we want just a step up from fast food. Wonderful owners though!
-Happenstance: A little further down Penn Ave but such a hidden gem! They serve breakfast and lunch, coffee, etc. A little bit of everything. Love their breakfast tacos and house made soups.
-Chantals: WONDERFUL hot sandwiches, unfortunately I've only been able to get them once because they sell out. Maybe you'll have better luck than I!
-Thai Gourmet: Open for lunch W-F. Lunch specials that comes with spring rolls and soup! Again, lovely owners.
-El Sabor: Pretty standard Mexican. Not anything special but have never done me wrong.
Bonus: They don't serve food but the earl gray hot chocolate from White Whale deserves a shout out, if you're ever looking for a hug in a cup.
Dropping down over the hill into Lawrenceville, you could go to The Nook. I've only actually ever had their breakfast food but I enjoyed it and would be interested in trying their lunch stuff.
Tasty Taquitos also on Penn have has delicious food but it's not a place you can sit so it might not be ideal if what you need is some time out of the hospital.
I really like the Cajun chicken sandwich and the Rachel at Lot 17 on Liberty Ave in Bloomfield.
The hospital cafeteria makes an awesome breakfast sandwich, and it's decently priced. Idk if it's still called the pop stop, but the area across from the cafeteria makes good bowls.
I've spent a lot of time in that hospital too - when we're really needing some reprieve we order delivery from Szechuan Spice. La gourmandine is down the hill in Lawrenceville but they have delicious and affordable sandwiches though they're not warm. I feel like when I'm in the hospital I always want hot food!
I’ve been going there at least once a year for 17 years now…… all the posters are right - sooo many places to go very close by……
I’m almost laughing when I say this - the hospital cafeteria has never once failed me! Fresh and quick…… tasty…… nice portions……. The sushi is good and very fresh…… good burgers……
If I have the time, I’ll hit the neighborhood…… otherwise, I hit the elevator :))
The hummus with pita at the middle eastern restaurant that opened in an old pizza place between the hospital and Wilson’s pharmacy would make a delicious lunch.
i always stop at the starbucks inside the hospital when i need something quick. haven’t gone to many restaurants around there because im only there a few times in the month. will be using the other things people list here though
yeah i think they are in need of a new oven, i’ve noticed over the past few visits it seems they’ve become slowly colder in the middle. the drinks tend to still be good at least when im REALLY in need of something (im hypoglycemic but have problems digesting foods so drinks tend to be easier for me because i can be quicker)
Spak's is good. We're there once a month, and the cafeteria in the hospital is pretty good. They have decent sushi, and good bowls in the Koala Cafe across from the cafeteria.
People's Indian on Penn Ave in Garfield.
Omg I was going to comment this. Would die for peoples
I’m so excited to try this!!! Thank you
This is the answer
Chantal's on Penn right across from Children's has good baguette sandwiches to go.
Also, I hope maybe you're just visiting each week to do an IT install or something. Sending good wishes for you and your family's health.
They make an amazing grilled cheese
I appreciate that
Taste of India (right across the street), El Sabor, and Camino Cocteleria y Cocina.
Seconding Thai Table and Kitchen.
Spak Brothers Pizza
I was thinking Spak too but they don't open until 3 PM.
Have to follow the typical Pittsburgh restaurant selection workflow: 1) Where would I like to eat? 2) Is it open when I want to eat there? 3) No. 4) Where else might I like to eat?...
This is truly getting out of hand in a city of this size. No one is open late or early or Sunday. 😡
Your options are also significantly reduced if you don't feel like cooking on Monday
Or Saturday or Monday or Tuesday…
And Deli on Butler for a good sandwich option!
Seconding Taste of India!
And Tasty Taquitos food truck and Apteka. It's honestly just an area with a lot of good food.
Apteka doesn’t do lunch.
I did miss that from the subject line. Sorry.
Well, Spak Bros pizza is really bland.
Thai Gourmet! They have lunch deals.
yes i love this place! so close to children's too.
They’re nice too.
Thanks!
Have heard great things about Istanbloom - looks like they only do Friday / Saturday lunches though.
A hoagie from Angelo's with the homemade mayo is never a bad choice.
The homemade mayo is phenomenal. Hope everything checks out, OP. ❤️
Istanbloom is delicious and they have lunch specials
I love places that have homemade mayo!!!
Not a fan of Cafe Mona personally, all the sandwiches I got there were super dry
also not recommending cafe Mona - overpriced and not very good.
El sabor is solid. They have a really good homemade salsa that I like - I think ancho Chile, but it's been a while.
Brothmonger
Seconding!
You could go down the hill and try Lawrence Hall (on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday for lunch).
How has no one mentioned El Sabor?
Thai Table & Kitchen, the wait is a little long so call ahead for carry out. Their Pad Kee Mao is my favorite!
Edit: Spak Bro's is great, didn't realize they're not open for lunch
Spak isn’t open for lunch
Lots of places we tried were closed 😂 especially on a Monday
Happenstance!
Adding my vote for Happenstance. Great food and atmosphere.
chantal’s cheese shop across the street is great. they sell grilled cheese to go and they’re to die for
Thai Cusine in Bloomfield, corner of Liberty Ave and Pearl Street.
Love them but they’re not open for lunch
Los cabbos is very good
Second this
Crepes at Geppetto Cafe
Taste of India is great. Tessaro’s is not too far. The Thai place near Tessaro’s good too.
Tessaro’s is not open for lunch
If you’re there late enough, it isn’t lunch, but try to experience Soju at least once!
Angelo's in Bloomfield, delicious pizza.
I love this place!
Thai Table and Taste of India
Tram’s Kitchen down the road near Penn + 40th street
I had to scroll too far to find Tram’s
the meatball pho and an iced green tea is the perfect meal!!
Angelo's, Caliente, Banh mi and Ti, Ginza.
The CHP cafeteria is the best hospital cafeteria in Pittsburgh.

Lot 17 has a little bit of everything the owners are pretty dope . Everyone there’s so nice
Lola’s by the doughboy is outstanding.
Lot 17, and Thai Cuisine.

Thank you so much for this!!!!
Another vote for People's Indian on Penn Ave
Dropping down over the hill into Lawrenceville, you could go to The Nook. I've only actually ever had their breakfast food but I enjoyed it and would be interested in trying their lunch stuff.

I really like the Cajun chicken sandwich and the Rachel at Lot 17 on Liberty Ave in Bloomfield.
Sending you all love 💜
Thanks!!
The crepes at Cafe Mona are quite good. I also like Fazio’s Pizza.
Love cafe Mona!
if you need dessert, Leona’s ice cream sandwiches
El sabor is good bang for your buck!! Also Tram’s Kitchen is great
The cafeteria in the hospital is pretty good!
The hospital cafeteria makes an awesome breakfast sandwich, and it's decently priced. Idk if it's still called the pop stop, but the area across from the cafeteria makes good bowls.
ineffable ca phe!
Came to say this
Camino is new but has lunch specials.

If somebody can pop down to the Strip, hit up Salem’s! They’re closed for an hour mid-day Friday for prayers, FYI
If they can’t get over there, I’m pretty sure the cafeteria at Children’s sells packaged meals from Salem’s that can be microwaved.
i always stop at the starbucks inside the hospital when i need something quick. haven’t gone to many restaurants around there because im only there a few times in the month. will be using the other things people list here though
We did today because most places were closed but our sandwiches were still cold in the center 😭
yeah i think they are in need of a new oven, i’ve noticed over the past few visits it seems they’ve become slowly colder in the middle. the drinks tend to still be good at least when im REALLY in need of something (im hypoglycemic but have problems digesting foods so drinks tend to be easier for me because i can be quicker)
Cafe Mona
Thai Table Kitchen was a staple for me and my husband!
Spak Brothers
They don’t open until 3:00
Spak's is good. We're there once a month, and the cafeteria in the hospital is pretty good. They have decent sushi, and good bowls in the Koala Cafe across from the cafeteria.
Try Penn ave pizza and steaks
Is that even open yet?
[deleted]
If DiAnoia’s is considered “around the hospital” you have about half the restaurants in the city to also consider.
😆
Polska Laska over in Sharpsburg. It's 15-20 min.
