• I've never seen a longer Taco Bell line than in Fairbanks, sub -30° at 10pm.

That's hilarious, and I don't doubt completely accurate.

Do they keep drive thru clear enough? I once almost kissed the wall at BK in Anchorage because they never cared to clean anything and the drive thru looked like miniature Himalayan.

NOONE KEEPS A CLEAR DRIVETHRU. And I hate it. I mean, I want businesses to be fined for not keeping them clean.

I meant, clean enough where my car isn't going hiking. If my car is going up and down bad then there is a chance i could land on a slope that takes my car towards building.

Complaining that someone else won't go out in -30 to shovel a drive thru because you don't want to get out of your own car at -30 might just be the comment most emblematic of American entitlement that I've ever seen on Reddit so far.

Well yeah I don’t get paid for it? It’s literally the purpose of the fuckin drive thru

It’s a fucking DRIVE THRU! It’s used for CARS…it ought to be plowed. But businesses don’t. Then it builds up with snow pack which creates huge foot deep crevices and humps…which when you stop your car on…make you slip forward into the car in front of you or sideways into the building or a bollard.

It’s about not paying for plowing out a drive lane.

Also…at -30 there’s legit reasons to use a drive-thru. It’s dangerous to turn off the car, take the baby out, leave the dog in the car, trundle grandma in…etc. it’s not just American laziness…sometimes you just can’t leave the car and need to use the damn drive thru. And it ought not be an expedition for a damned goat and risking your vehicles.

    cook your damn meal..

I’ve been to a lot of Taco Bells. That one might be the best one.

Half moon bay Taco bell looks nice lol.

    Pacifica one serves alcohol

Plus you get to watch surfing as entertainment.

Oh shoot yea its pacifica not half moon bay lol

I bet Taco Bell slaps hard when it’s that cold out. Bonus points if you’re absolutely obliterated.

what else do you do with the midnight sun or the moon moon?

Edit meant to say noon moom but autocorrect doesn’t like that.

It was bad when they opened up a sonic

  • There's an old saying in my neighborhood, fuck that. :)

😂 you know, sometimes I agree with you, but heated gloves, a happy dog, and a pretty sunrise/set and I forget it's stupid cold out.

Did you say sunrise/set because the day is only like 30 minutes long, so there really isn't a differentiation between the two?

Yeah, pretty much. When I took this photo the sun had been above the horizon for an hour and 40 minutes, but it still looks like a sunrise, and it's solar noon and about to start going down, so no real differential between the two.

I was in Sweden for midsommar, and it was so hard to tell what time it was. We kept thinking we should go get dinner, as it seemed like late afternoon, but it was 10:30 PM, and almost everywhere was closed. It was a trip.

Ahh yes, the only accurate reply to "what time is it?" is "daylight."

If only there were some more modern way of figuring out what time it is

Theodosius of Bithynia just entered the chat

Dialing the time and temp line of course

How does doggy’s paws not get frostbite at this temperature? Or is he one of those winter breeds?

She mentioned he's a husky mix. If he's out for more than twenty minutes it gets cold for them. I have a lab/doberman mix. He loves cold and snow - rolls in it and enjoys the colder air. The salt on the ground is the worst - that gets into their paws, dries and cracks them, and it stings. Paw wax or boots are ideal. But in this environment, the snow is nice on their paws.

Man my Boxer thinks she's will die of exposure once it drops below 40. I mean I'm a delicate tropical flower myself, so I appreciate the run out, poop, and run back in.

Why are you pooping outside? Do you not have indoor plumbing?

Have a long haired corgi. She will literally sit in the snow and refuse to come in. She lives for the cold. However below zero she’ll tuck the paws in and we literally have to pick her up lol. Turtle mode.

I live in a subtropical clime. Why did you add “(solar)“?

Do you live where the sun is up for 30 days, and then gone for 30 days? I’m a snow idiot and ask out of genuine curiousity, I always see the sun and the lack thereof every 24 hours. 🤣

"solar noon" is just the time of day that the sun is highest in the sky.

    "Noon" is 12:00

They do not often occur at the same time.

Today was not one of those days.

Correct! Solar noon was at 12:49 this afternoon in Fairbanks.

Very nice. Thank you both. I didn’t know that.

    Interesting. TIL.

This was a fun Wikipedia rabbit hole for a nerd like me! Clock time vs solar time also explains why the earliest sunset and solstice don't align. The underlying reason has to do with the earth's tilt and eccentricity. The analemma is a cool graphical depiction of this. It turns out simple things like there being 24 hours in a day and 365 days in year aren't actually true. It's all just approximations.

It also depends on where you are in your time zone. Also DST. Where I am, solar noon is at least half an hour after 12 or 1 (depending on DST)

Not every 30 days, but go far enough north or south you will have winters and summers where the sun is up 24/7 or no sun at all 24/7. For example in Tromsø, Norway the sun will never go below the horizon between the end of May to the end of July. Then you have shorter days and longer nights until the sun sets in the end of November not to be seen again until the end of January.

Isn’t that cold of a temp dangerous for dogs?

Depends on the dog. Chihuahua? Probably. Siberian Husky? No.

It takes a great deal of coaxing to get my Great Pyrenees/saint Bernard to come in when it’s anywhere between +5 and -30 Celsius. She lays in the yard, barking at the sky or staring angrily into the distance. Even in high wind, ears just flapping, she wants to be outside. My short haired mutt has to be coaxed to go outside to pee when it’s cold/windy/rainy. Haha.

My great grandpappy used to say that too.

  • Greetings from the Yukon, -45°F over here today

Dude, I know! Fairbanks has been one of the warmest places in the Interior for the last few weeks despite the -30's. It's been a good "old-fashioned" cold-snap.

Yeah it sure has, fingers crossed it warms up a bit but oh well, not our first rodeo. Have a good Christmas!

Fort McMurray - 41°C checking in

Phoenix Arizona checking in, 82°F high today. Thoughts and prayers. this place is broken

Salt Lake City was 61 yesterday. We are so fucked.

Can you send some of that to southern Finland pls. Been whooping three times below zero the past month...

This whole December in Europe has been one giant fuck you. 10-15C in the Netherlands for most of it.

    I WANT COLD

Atlanta here. +45F. It’s cold. Y’all arctic people are something else.

  • How is that dog not freezing

Id think booties at the very least

My dog hates booties. We use Musher's Secret on super cold days. It's like Vaseline you put on their paws.

Exact same with mine. He refuses to even move in booties, but will thankfully let me put Musher’s on. It’s been our saving grace!

Depends on the dog. Mine is comfortable to -10 F and 104 F. Below or above that's booties and only for a limited time. But between -10 and 70 he's as happy as can be. 70-104 he's just annoyed it's warm. Only thing in winter that really bothers him is snowballs in his paws. And he's a short coat hunting dog. These winter breeds are just fine. Just gotta pay attention to the dog just like you do a human. And basic accomodations can make dogs tolerate most anything just like humans. We have booties and a jacket for winter as well as a swamp vest for heat and with those he's a monster in any conditions.

I live in the desert and anyone taking their dog out on asphalt in the summer without boots is an absolute piece of shit, no question. Melted, burned, and otherwise injured paw pads are an eventuality not a possibility. Even grass gets hot in the sun.

The comments seem pretty divided on this subject when the dog is in the snow instead.

I've never felt - 35°F (honestly I don't know if I've ever felt even 0° F). I know more dogs evolved to live in extreme cold than extreme heat.

The "my dog seems fine" argument doesn't hold up when the issue is hot pavement, I don't know if it works for extreme cold.

I don't have a point. It's just interesting to me to see people arguing about it.

Edit: it's December 22nd and it's going to be 81°F today. Merry Christmas!

Dear god OP put a jacket and booties on that dog. Your explanation about what type of dog it is doesn't matter because its fur is short, not thick and long like winter-loving dogs.

OP said the dog has a thick double coat. I think they might know more about their dog.

I would assume this isn't his first day in Fairbanks. Some dogs you would let out at that temp and they might not make it off the doormat before the go potty and turn back inside. Others you let out and 30 minutes later you practically have to drag them back in. The dog at the very least knows when the dog is cold.

But... but the Reddit armchair vets have to start an angry mob and attack OP so they can feel morally superior!

Reddit are the Karens calling the cops on a Husky playing in the snow outside in 32 F weather.

Doesn’t mean their paws won’t get frostbite

    Armchair cynologists manifesting so hard😭

Whatever the coat they have, every dog deserves a protective footwear during extreme temperatures. It's like walking a Mexican hairless on a pavement during scorching heat & saying that they're fine cause of the their breed.

Are you doubting cheeseandwine's comment!? They clearly know more about living in these regions than the people living in these regions!

They put their dog in a sweater and booties whenever they wear a sweater a booties because "if you're cold, they're cold".

When New Orleans had that freeze earlier this year, the amount of people from warm weather climates who suddenly knew how to winterproof a house and drive in winter conditions spiked by 400%.

Apparently burst pipes can't happen because the water moved at one point during the day! And video game rally driving experience means you can go full speed with summer tires on ice.

No one loves dogs more than me. I also live in Fairbanks. Believe me, the dog is fine.

It’s an Alaskan husky, it’s in its element (source: I’m an Alaskan)

I agree, it would be cruel/dangerous to keep the dog outside without a doghouse or source of warmth, but for the picture it’s just fine

It's also wearing a harness. Probably skijoring. Burning plenty of calories to stay warm in its coat... especially because skis slide terribly at -30. The snow is like sand.

Did it just get shaved cuz that's the shortest fur I've ever seen on any husky

Alaskan Huskies are distinctly different than Siberian Huskies (aka what people think of when they envision a husky) and have short fur. It’s partly genes, partly what OP was saying - they’re mutts haha. Despite looking bare and half-starved, they are lean mean running machines

I got to ride on a cart pulled by sled dogs a long while back. Those pups just want to pull and they could really get that thing moving.

It was summer and their handler had to hold them back so they didn't overheat.

Good lord, the Reddit armchair vets are out in effect

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Do some research on real Alaskan Huskies.

You don’t understand undercoats. The top layer of fur being short or long has literally nothing to do with it.

It's probably born and bred in Alaska.

So if a poodle is born and bred in Alaska, it automatically becomes resistant to cold ?

My mate has one of those big white fluffy dogs with the black tongue. Lives in Texas. Dog is absolutely not made for 100F +.

I’m not buying what you’re selling

According to Reddit you should stop being mates with your mate then

During character creation you can work with the den mother (DM) to make an optimal character for the campaign.

    Huskies man lol

    That’s a Doberman

My phone sometimes think she's a doberman too! She's actually husky/German shepherd mix. Alaskan husky is just a nice way of saying mutt, but just about every dog in Fairbanks is part husky.

The husky coat is powerful lol

I mean it's pretty obvious if they're not shivering they're fine. Just gotta watch out for those ear tips to not freeze off lol.

    Oh, so she’s 100% attitude

Dobermans freeze at 50f, ain't no way lol

It's a mutt, probably has husky in it.

Probably part Cherokee princess and part Irish on his father's side.

Yeah but it probably saw a Husky at some point so it would have absorbed its powers. Or something.

  • The light and depth of color in this pic are really beautiful.

Thanks! It's moments like this that make winters here worthwhile.

I can hear that crisp quiet cold.

I fucking LOVE that quiet. Its the few times a year where everything seems still in the world.

Seriously! It's a great composition. Plus he's on the left side and gives enough room for the natural background and the doggo.

  • Happy solstice. That is darn cold.

  • The good ol days. The neat thing about Alaskan weather is once you hit like -10, -30 feels the same. I have never been so cold tot he bone before though but for the absolute beauty that is Alaska....it's worth it.

At those temps, definitely more important to check wind and precipitation than worrying about 10 degrees difference. I still run out barefoot in shorts and tshirt to grab my deliveries in a dry minus 30.

For a second I thought you meant -10c feels the same as -30c, and I was about to say it sure as fuck does not.

I will say, anything colder than -25°c and shit stops working, though. We had 3 or 4 days of -35c to -40c a few winters ago and simply getting vehicles working without breaking something was a gamble.

I did mean that. once it got to -10 the difference of -10 and -30 was not much.

Yea not having an engine block heater or garage is a big nono in fairbanks

For the love of God man use celsius or fahrenheit.

TBF at -30, either one is about the same.

I assumed you meant -10f to -30f, which is only a difference if like 7°c.

I disagree. -10c is weather I could be out nearly indefinitely in a hoodie or light jacket in as long as I was moving. -30c is straight up dangerous if you're underdressed.

Past -30c, even engine block heaters don't work right. I have literally had to tarp my work truck and put a tiger torch under the oil pan to get it to start. Plastic body panels break if you lean against them because they're so brittle at temps that low. -10c is what i consider normal winter temps that don't affect the function of things much, if they're designed for it. Very little is designed for lower than -30c.

They have to have meant Fahrenheit as -10 °C is not notable in the slightest, whereas -10 °F (-23 °C) and -30 °F are both stupid cold.

-30 feels pretty different from -10, but -50 and -30 feel about the same (all Fahrenheit). After a week at -30 or colder, you get a warm front that takes it to -10 and get excited about going outside.

Yeah I'm with you. -10F is where it starts to feel cold. -30F is fucking frigid.

  • photo taken just minutes before the vampires wake

  • To think that for me and many like me, today is the Summer Solstice! How strange to think that across the world you’re facing the shortest day of the year! Hope you don’t freeze!

And you're having the longest! Hope you are staying cool.

  • Happy Solstice from here in CO. It feels more like October than December here right now.

  • it only gets better now

  • This is a dope ass pic!

  • How warm do you guys keep your house?

Our Toyo is set to 65°F/18C, but when it get's this cold, I frequently have to hit the pipes in our bathroom with a heat gun because they freeze... we have crappy insulation in our floors. Need to do something about that... haha!

  • Yeah but it's a dry cold! XD

(I lived in Fairbanks, parents still live there.)

  • My birthplace!!! Oh how I want to go back...
I miss watching Disney Movies at noon-night in my sister's house.
She had floor to ceiling windows that faced East.
    It was weird and magical.
    Hi from the Oregon Coast!

It's beautiful there, too. I like Oregon. Hi from Anchorage.

  • "It's high noon!"

  • I play my video games on hard mode, don't need real life to be the same.

  • No coat for the dog?

She's part husky, and quite warm. If we'd been out for a long time, I would have put booties and a coat on her, but we were only out for around an hour. She was fine.

What I love about all the comments in here about your dog is how everyone wants to tell you about the safety of your dog in the cold as if they know more about cold tolerances of dogs than the owner of a dog in Alaska.

First time seeing an Alaskan Husky?

  • Oh my gosh I forgot the solstice!!! Thank you

  • I used to live there. I don’t miss it.

  • Kind regards to Esther Dome & Chena Hot Springs... We miss you! And the Ravens that live in the pines in back of Sophie's Station are a hoot to watch.

  • Meanwhile, 0 C in Longyearbyen.

Which is A LOT further north than Fairbanks.

Yeah, oceans do that! And wind does that. We get very little wind and are far from the coast. So it gets really cold here in the winter (-40) and hot in the summer (+90F/+32C) it's one of the biggest temperature swings from winter to summer anywhere.

  • Great photo! Hope you are inside and warm now

  • So cold the C and the F are almost the same number... incredible

  • People in these comments acting like they know OP's dog better than OP, smh. Amazing picture btw!

Thanks. I sort of expected that when I posted this, which is why I'm taking the time to respond to a lot of them. The truth is, every dog is different. My pup is perfectly happy at this temp while plenty of others would absolutely not be. As a responsible pet parent, you need to be aware and pay attention, I do, and I want people to know that.

  • Damn dude, you have got some beautiful eyes! 😮👍

  • Happy solstice from Lapland, Finland! We're headin towards the light yet again. Mild -14'c and a beutiful day over here

  • Greetings from Oulu, Finland! I believe we're a bit higher north, but thanks to the Gulf Stream and polar jet streams, it's only -5 °C here today. We've seen the sun only on few days this December since the skies have been overcast.

  • lots of people in this thread think they know more about alaskan dogs than the guy living in alaska with his dog

    reddit in a nutshell

  • Thank you for including Celsius in your post.

  • ive lived there! i can still smell the diesel fuel of the snow plow and salt trucks

  • Beautiful! I miss Fairbanks so much

  • It's going to be 73° in Denver today 😑

  • The amount of uneducated commenters complaining about the dog is hilarious. You people have no clue what you're talking about. Siberian Huskies are not comparable to Alaskan Huskies who are bred to work in these conditions.

  • Love that half the comments are telling you your dog needs a jacket because it doesn't look like a husky😅 They would all have a heart attack if they saw what the dogs that compete in the Iditarod look like!

  • -34 ain’t shit up there is it? I’m northern Alberta, not gatekeeping as I imagine that temp that close to the ocean hits you to the core. On my farm up here our record is -63C with wind chill

My first winter in Alaska was up on the haul road at Coldfoot and Deadhorse on the north coast. We had a coldsnap that ran to those temps that winter. The coldest windchill I saw was -90°F/-67°C. Like instant frostbite to any exposed skin. Down in Coldfoot at that time they hit -72°F/ -58°C ambient. It broke the high volume diesel pump that the truckers use. They had to tell the truckers they couldn't get fuel until it warmed up. The funny thing was that the wind made the ambient temperature warmer in Deadhorse than Coldfoot, but the windchill was colder. It was in late January, just after the sun came back in Deadhorse, but it was so cold the inversion of the smog BLOCKED OUT THE SUN FOR ANOTHER WEEK! That was when I finally was like "fuck this." 😂

    Hope you're staying warm!

As someone who has only lived in Central America, Florida and Arizona I understand nothing of what you wrote and just know it’s colder than anything I could possibly imagine handling.

  • my friend had a rule with their kids. “be home by sundown”…. Too be fair they are in wasilla and see a bit more light then you.

  • Stay safe and warm, friend!

  • Come out to north pole, it was -40 with ice fog when I left work in the morning

  • Hey from Juneau! Take some of your cold back! -8 is too low for us!

  • Its gonna get close here in Minnesota I imagine! Hello from central MN!

  • Perfect time to go ptarmigan hunting, then cook that up with some honey and butter on fresh bread. Is there anything better?

  • Meanwhile, record warm temps this week here in the southeastern US. 🤪

  • Awesome. Looks like nice walk

  • Awesome picture, happy solstice!

  • I dare you to lick a sign post.🤣

  • I don’t understand people who willing live in places like this, better you than me

  • Ah Fairbanks. I can feel that first shocking breath when you step outside and your lungs seize up for a second. And the nose hairs prickling. And the eyes watering.

  • 31C/88F here in australia - hope you have a great xmas and new year!

    It's humid like a swamp 🥵

  • I'm not sure if my mental health could take living in Alaska but damn if I don't want to experience that cold at least once in my life.

I experienced -18⁰F when I was a kid in Washington state. But I want to experience that far north winter like you have up there.

  • I have a family member in Fairbanks. Say hi to Santa in the North Pole for me .

  • Greetings from all the way to the other side of the globe, Puerto Williams, Chile! (Latitude almost 55ºS)
Sorry we had to borrow all your sunlight hours away, down here we have sun from 4am to 11pm at this time of year! Happy solstice!

  • Yeesh, and I thought the -10F in anchorage was bad…

  • I'm an idiot and first thought AK was Arkansas and I was very surprised. (I'm not American haha).

  • Great pic! Curious how much snow do you get a year? We get 300+ inches in northern Michigan. Im guessing your average temps are way colder but you might not get as much snow? Also I saw your comment about heated gloves, thanks for the idea, I will be checking those out!

No, we don't. Fairbanks is semi-desert, actually, we get very similar precipitation to Flagstaff, AZ. It doesn't look like it because the permafrost means we have a very high water table, so we still get nice green summers. Winters are pretty variable but we average around 90in/ 230cm of snow. But it doesn't go anywhere, very little melts, so it stacks up and you end up walking around above bushes that are head-height in the summer. It's weird.

  • meanwhile 70 degrees in Colorado... fuck this

  • For the uninitiated, is that pup okay with such a thin coat in that type of temperature?

  • Man I miss Fairbanks. Good times up at the turtle club!

  • My wife and I have really been leaning into winter hiking this year and it has been unusually cold. We’ve been down to about -7F but not as far down as this. What layers are you sporting?

  • I grew up in Fairbanks, man I dont miss that weather!! I do miss how pretty winter can be. Have fun on the walks.

  • Almost sweater weather.

  • Wow so cold, puppy's doing OK!

  • I was born in Fairbanks, haven’t been back to AK in 50 years, don’t miss the winter, nor the summer.

  • Genuine question, how well do your dogs do in that kind of cold?

*The dog in the background doesn't seem to have a thick coat, which is why I'm curious?

Dogs let you know when they’re uncomfortable. My dog can’t be out for more than a couple minutes when it’s -10F. She can barely walk when it’s like that so I only send her out to go potty then right back inside. If OP’s dog seems happy, she probably is

Alaskan Huskies do perfect in the cold with their double coat. I think you mean it doesn't look like a long coat because its too difficult to tell the thickness from this far. They are an amazing breed.

  • Alaskans have the biggest balls. Men and women.

  • That type of dog should have some type of jacket for that temp no?

Naw, she part husky, and quite warm. We were only out for an hour or so, had it been longer, I would have put her booties and jacket on, but she was totally fine for a run at the dog park and a walk today.

I have a purebred Siberian Husky and her paws burn within a few minutes at -30. Obviously you know your dog better than us, but an hour is not a short amount of time at that temperature. I can't imagine that paws are going to burn at 3 or 5 hours but not an hour.

Likely that by this point the dog doesn’t feel it if they’ve been doing this for years. That’s a fairly regular temp to see up there in peak winter.

She has pretty fuzzy feet, which you can't see from the picture. Like I said, had we been out longer, of if it had been much colder, she'd have had her booties on, but she didn't need them today.

I imagine OP's dog has been doing this it's entire life.

  • As a resident of northern Minnesota, with an active dog who requires a few miles of walks every day in those temps, this picture resonates with me, eye brow/eye lashes icicles and all. Can never fully explain to people how cold it feels when it’s so cold your eye lashes start freezing together.

  • You’re making me miss Fairbanks.

It has its moments for sure.  With the hoar frost on the trees, the aurora, and the gorgeous lighting of the low angle sun, winter is a beautiful season here.
